Chris Martin turns hype man for Dakota Johnson’s film, quashes 'split' rumours quietly

Coldplay’s Chris Martin and actress Dakota Johnson recently made headlines for reportedly ending their eight-year-long relationship. A source quoted by PEOPLE claimed, “It feels final this time,” referring to their alleged breakup after years of being in an on-and-off relationship. But now, a recent gesture from Martin has added an unexpected twist to the story.

At a recent Coldplay concert in Las Vegas, Chris Martin surprised the audience by publicly backing Dakota Johnson’s upcoming film Materialists. In a video circulated by gossip handle Deuxmoi, Martin was seen addressing the crowd with warmth, saying, “Big love to everyone. Don’t forget to see Materialists. We love you.” This shoutout stood out, especially given the ongoing breakup chatter surrounding the couple.

The film Materialists is scheduled for release on June 13. Martin’s public support has led many fans to believe that all may not be over between the two. While the singer made no direct comment on the relationship, his gesture certainly raised eyebrows and prompted fresh speculation.

Earlier this year, Dakota had attended three of Coldplay’s shows in India as part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour. She was seen at the January 19 and 21 concerts held at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai, and also at the Ahmedabad show on January 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Her presence at the concerts back then reflected the strength of their bond, which now seems to be under public scrutiny.

Chris and Dakota reportedly began dating in 2017 and made their first public appearance together the following year. Though engagement rumours made headlines in 2024, sources close to the couple had shared they were “in no rush to get married.” Before his relationship with Johnson, Chris was married to actor Gwyneth Paltrow. The two separated in 2015 but continue to co-parent their children, Apple and Moses. Martin’s brief but telling message has not only drawn attention to Johnson’s film but also cast doubt over the truth behind their rumoured split.
