Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another milestone with the launch of Chandrayaan 2, India’s second lunar exploration after Chandrayaan 1. It was originally scheduled to launch on 14 July but was called off 58 mins before taking off due to some technical issue. Chandrayaan 2 is India’s lunar mission which will attempt to explore Moon’s south polar region where no country has ever gone before.

The Chandrayaan 2 consisting of a lunar orbiter, lander and rover would soft-land on the moon on 7 September. The lunar exploration is India’s so far the most ambitious mission, aiming at improving the understanding of Moon for the benefit of the country and humanity as a whole.

The successful launch of Chandrayaan has filled the hearts of Indians with immense pride. From the Prime Minister of the country to cricketers and celebrities, everyone across the country is talking about Chandrayaan. In popular culture, Producer Ekta Kapoor recently announced her new web series titled MOM while Akshay Kumar will be seen in Mission Mangal, both based on ISRO’s space mission. 

Celebrating ISRO’s achievement, we have compiled a list of Indian Television shows which were based on space missions and aliens.

1. Captain Vyom

Milind Soman starrer Captain Vyom was a Doordarshan show which aired in 1998. It was a science fiction series set in the year 2123 where humans emerged as the superior being in the entire Universe, conquering the solar system. Captain Vyom (Milind Soman) who developed superpowers with the help of Yoga, was assigned by the World Government which was headquartered in Delhi, to capture fugitives.

2. Space City Sigma

Space City Sigma

Space City Sigma was one of the first science fiction Television series based on space adventures. It was a Doordarshan show and aired in the 80’s. The show was set in a space city named Sigma which ran on fusion energy and was  docked on the Galactic frontier. The adventure series showcased humans against aliens, who board the human galactic ship.

3. Indradhanush

Indradhanush

Along with Space City Sigma, Indradhanush was one of the first science fiction Television shows, which aired during the late 80’s. The show produced and directed by Anand Mahendroo, featured today’s popular celebrities including Karan Johar, Urmila Matondkar, Vishal Singh, Ashutosh Gowarikar, and Akshay Anand. The story revolved around a group of young kids who come across an alien prince, running away from his enemies. The show also introduced the concept of time travel and time machine.

4. Aryamaan – Brahmaand Ka Yodha


Aryamann - Brahmand Ka Yodha

After the success of Shaktimaan, Mukesh Khanna produced Aryamaan – Brahmaand Ka Yodha and also played the lead role of Aryamaan. The series centered around Aryamann, a warrior prince of Thar Empire of Ariyana galaxy, which is situated millions of light years away from Earth.

5. Antariksh - Ek Amar Katha

Antarikh - Ek Amar Katha was a science fiction drama which aired on Star Plus. The show depicted the story of Amar, who was the eldest of his brothers and had all the traits to become the ruler of his kingdom. However, his brothers conspire against him and exile him from Earth, forcing him to live on the fringes of space.
