Streaming platform Netflix India is working on an Indian version of the American sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with actor Kunal Kemmu confirmed to play the lead role inspired by detective Jake Peralta. The series is being developed in collaboration with Banijay Asia, a production house known for adapting international formats for Indian viewers. Filming is expected to begin in October.

Kemmu, who has worked in both films and digital content, started his career as a child artist in the 1990s before transitioning into lead roles. His recent work includes web series like Pop Kaun? and films such as Lootcase. He is currently involved in another Netflix project titled Single Papa, which is expected to wrap before he begins work on the new comedy series.

As of now, only Kemmu’s involvement has been officially reported. Casting for the remaining ensemble, including characters based on Captain Holt, Amy Santiago, Rosa Diaz, Terry Jeffords, and others, is currently in progress. The show will attempt to reinterpret the core dynamic of the original Brooklyn Nine-Nine—a workplace comedy set inside a police precinct—while situating it within an Indian context.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which aired from 2013 to 2021, followed the lives of detectives in the fictional 99th precinct of the NYPD. The show was widely appreciated for its diverse characters, mix of humor and social commentary, and its balance between episodic comedy and character-driven arcs. The original cast included Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, and Terry Crews.

The Indian adaptation is expected to retain the comedic structure while reworking cultural and professional elements to suit local settings. The tone is likely to shift depending on how the show navigates themes around Indian policing, social dynamics, and workplace culture.

Banijay Asia has previously handled adaptations like The Night Manager (Disney+ Hotstar) and has experience reimagining international formats for Indian platforms. The Indian version of Brooklyn Nine-Nine marks Netflix India’s continued investment in local adaptations of well-known global titles.

No release date has been announced yet, and further information about the rest of the cast and creative team is expected in the coming months.
