Summer Debutantes

BollyCurry celebrates the beauty of summer by presenting to you the tinsel-town stars who debuted with movies that graced the summers.

The word summer is synonymous with scorching heat, straw hats and stylish glares. Gorgeous summer dresses in pleasant colours, cool drinks with drops gliding down the glasses and the sun dazzling his best smile make summers so amazing. This week, BollyCurry celebrates the beauty of summer by presenting to you the tinsel-town stars who debuted with movies that graced the summers.

Amrita Rao

After working in numerous commercials and some music videos, Amrita Rao starred in her first Bollywood movie, Ab Ke Baras, in May 2002. The movie went almost unnoticed by everyone. Later on, working with Shahid Kapoor in his debut, Ishq Vishk, Amrita came to be known as a rising star. She played consistent roles in Masti, Main Hoon Na, Deewar and others. Her life changing moment came along with the success of the movie Vivah, which proved to be a blockbuster. Despite the prospects of a shining future, Amrita is missing in the present scenario with barely an appearance here or there.

Shahid Kapoor

For someone who spent his early life in advertisements, music videos and as a background dancer in movies, Kapoor proved his mesh with bigger challenges and with effortless ease. However, his career has been one characterized by umpteen ups and downs. After an initial struggle, he kicked off with Ishq Vishk and became a star overnight. However, his next movies such as Fida and Dil Maange More brought home only disappointment, but things changed when Kapoor received critical appreciation in Shikhar. His next turning point came through with Vivah, which was one of the highest grossing movies of that time. In 2007, Jab We Met and Kaminey created new dimensions of success for the actor. Since then, he has worked in a number of movies without much success. Phata Poster Nikla Hero opposite Ileana D'Cruz, and Rambo Rajkumar opposite Sonakshi Sinha, are his next movies that are expected to bring back his summer success.

Kareena Kapoor Khan

A part of the film-rooted Kapoor family, it would've been surprising had Kareena Kapoor stayed away from the world of cinema. She started off with Refugee in June 2000 and though the movie did not gather much success, the actress managed to get noticed and was appreciated for her acting. Right from the first movie, Kareena has been seen as an actress with a storehouse for acting. She has movies such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Jab We Met, Chameli, 3 Idiots, Bodyguard and many critics and popular awards in her kitty. Now happily married to Saif Ali Khan, summer launches have always worked in her favour.

Imran Khan

Having worked as a child artist in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar, Imran Khan made his official debut with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. With chocolatey looks, innocent eyes and a calm demeanour, he was here to stay and conquer. His next two movies didn't do well, but then onwards he has earned himself a reputation as a versatile actor. I Hate Luv Storys, Delhi Belly, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu fall under this category. He was last seen in Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, which proved his mettle as an actor. His next release, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Again opposite Sonakshi Sinha, is being anxiously anticipated by fans.

Karisma Kapoor

Karisma made her debut at a young age of seventeen with Prem Qaidi in June 1991. Her subsequent movies were a success at the Box Office, namely Jigar (1992), Anari (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Suhaag (1994) and many more. She won critical acclaim for movies such as Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai, Fiza and Zubeidaa. She is considered an actress with a multiple talents, be it acting or dancing. She was last seen in the movie Dangerous Ishhq, which failed to make an impact, and has also lent her voice for Bodyguard.

Abhishek Bachchan

Jr. Bachchan starred for the first time in Refugee (2000) and garnered positive reviews from all. He acted in various movies, but he was praised for his work in movies like Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and Yuva. His first commercial hit was Dhoom in which he starred alongside John Abraham and Uday Chopra. He later continued to streak success at the box-office with movies like Bunty aur Babli, Sarkar and Bluffmaster, Dhoom 2, Dostana and Paa. The actor was last seen in Bol Bachchan which won him a bag full of awards. Right now he is eagerly awaiting his next release, Dhoom 3.

Vidya Balan

Despite being a vital part of the sitcom Hum Paanch, Vidya acted in advertisements and music videos in the initial stages. Her debut with the movie Parineeta opposite Saif Ali Khan turned the tables and she landed the role of an RJ in Lage Raho Munna Bhai opposite Sanjay Dutt. Her next few movies did not garner much appeal but she continued her tirade and was rewarded with the success of five consecutive movies: Paa (2009), Ishqiya (2010), No One Killed Jessica (2011), The Dirty Picture (2011) and Kahaani (2012). Her summer success can only be known with the tag of "female hero" attached to her.

Dhanush

Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja, or Dhanush as he is fondly known, is a superstar from the southern cinema and gained worldwide recognition through his song "Why This Kolaveri Di". His career in Tamil movies has been praiseworthy with numerous awards in his name that depict his excellence. Recently, he made his debut in Bollywood through Raanjhanaa, playing a Hindu guy who's head over heels in love with a Muslim girl. It wasn't a big success in terms of numbers, but Dhanush and his acting have been the main attraction of the movie. Perhaps a summer debut could do wonders for him in Bollywood over the time?

Last but not the least, here comes one of Bollywood's best onscreen couple.

Kajol Devgn

Post her debut movie Bekhudi in July 1992, Kajol's career kicked off with Baazigar opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Her success was noted owing to movies such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. She received critical appreciation for movies like Gupt, Dushman, U Me aur Hum and My Name is Khan. Her comeback in 2006 with Fanaa opposite Aamir Khan was welcomed with much applause. Throughout her career, she has managed to establish herself as one of the most successful actresses in town.

Shah Rukh Khan

Khan started his career with television serials Fauji and Circus. His big break came through the movie Deewana in 1992 which was a hit at the box-office. He then moved on with small and careful steps until Darr and Baazigar came along. Breaking through the trend, he received tremendous appreciation for his work. After that, there was no stopping him as he continued to climbed the ladder of success. His next two blockbusters, Karan Arjun and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge are still legends till date. The list of his successful movies, commercially or critically, is a long one. He was last seen in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra's swan song, and is now being awaited to be seen in Chennai Express, an action love story. Summer debut couldn't have been luckier for anyone more than SRK, the King of Bollywood.

BollyCurry leaves you all to contemplate and put in your views and premonitions on how favorable summer has been to all. Until then, please enjoy the season with lots of cool drinks and BollyCurry tadka to go with it.
