"Pakistani band Jal & Lucky Ali songs in the 90s is what I miss the most" - Adarsh Gourav on 90s nostalgia

Actor Adarsh Gourav has witnessed a whirlwind transition in his career post the film The White Tiger premiered on Netflix over two and a half years ago. Since then, he has been in some of the most interesting projects, including a Hollywood series, Extrapolations, that premiered earlier this year on Apple TV+.

But just about two weeks ago, Gourav co-starred in yet another banger of a series, Guns & Gulaabs, on Netflix, which was created by Raj & DK. Playing the role of Chota Ganchi, he had his own quirks and development, which was one of the most interesting parts of the show.

In an exclusive conversation with us, we asked the actor about the quirks in his character and how they were designed, the most 90s thing he misses and much more.

The quirks in your character are one of the funniest things in Guns & Gulaabs. How did you prepare for the same, and how did you get into the psyche of the character?

I guess by just staying truthful to the person you creating, you think about their history and their relationship dynamics with people - their experiences, where they come from and so on. All these things are very useful in developing the psyche of the character - the walk, the way they talk and everything else.

Q. Working in a Raj & DK presentation is always about working with subtlety and references. As Chhota Ganchi, what were the smaller quirks or references that were specifically intended for your character development?

I don't think there were any specific quirks that were designed when Chota Ganchi was written. Good writing always gives you a lot of history about the character, but it doesn't always tell you what to do. It depends on the person's interpretation of it. So, all the quirks that were developed were done while we were building the character from scratch and with a lot of experimentation as well.

Q. What is the most 90s thing you remember doing and miss the most?

The most 90s thing I miss and that I remember as well is the indie bands that used to exist, and I used to listen to. A lot of indie rock music used to happen that I really miss. Singing legends like Lucky Ali, Sonu Nigam, the late KK, Pakistani bands like Jal and others used to put out such amazing songs and music - which I miss the most.
