Soumya, it's been 3 years that people have missed you on TV. What were you doing all this while?
When an actor works, he or she dedicates 14 hours to a show and it is extremely difficult to spend time with family. My fans and people from the industry wanted me to come back on Tv but I wanted to refuel myself and wait for the right project. After bagging this role as Kaurwaki, I am sure that people will not see me as
Soumya Seth probably for another 2, 5 or 10 years as long as the show runs so it was important for me to give some importance to myself.
I explored places such as Los Angeles and Virginia and also joined acting courses to brush up my skills.
How did this role come to you?
From the time I entered this industry, I had made up my mind of not projecting fragile characters on-screen. I wanted to pull off a character who is more than enough for herself. Khubsoorat being my last show, the character spoke more about fashion but a woman is more than that. She nurtures and is brave. Being a woman is the most beautiful thing which could happen to me and Kaurwaki is the celebration of being that woman.
Did you approach Contiloe Entertainment or was it the other way round?
Well, I was desperate to play a character in Ashoka Samrat as it was important for people to know that I can project anger as an emotion apart from the fragile ones. When Ashoka Samrat came on-air, I inquired for auditions but the casting director informed me that the characters will take almost a year to transform into young adults. They instead asked me if I was interested in doing
Bharat Ka Veer Putra - Maharana Pratap.
I stayed put as I only wanted this show. I waited, improved my acting and explored places and when I learnt about the show taking a leap, I contacted the casting department once again and they, in turn, informed me that I was one of the four actresses who had been shortlisted to play the character. I cried out of happiness at that moment!
Bollywood beauty Kareena Kapoor has essayed Kaurwaki in the movie Ashoka opposite King Khan (Shah Rukh Khan). Was she your inspiration?
When I watched her essay Kaurwaki, I was touched as I too wanted to play a warrior princess. She is one of my inspirations but not my only inspiration.
On a lighter note, how long does it take you to get ready to project Kaurwaki?
In a rush, I take an hour at least.
You have never been a part of historical projects, the current trend on TV. How challenging is it?
The best part about being a part of a historical show is that whenever somebody googles history, they will find my picture attached to the character! Frankly speaking, learning the right Hindi was challenging. I had never sat on a horse so it was my first experience and also my entry is with a fighting sequence.
When people watch the sequence on-screen for half an hour, it may seem easy but the actor has to shoot for a whole day for the same which can get taxing. But on the whole, it is an enjoyable experience.
Did you undergo any workshops for the action scenes?
For now, I have learnt sword fighting and horse riding and I am sure we will have to train for many more courses.
Lastly, please tell us about your level of comfort pairing with Mohit Raina...
When we met initially, I thought he would have a lot of attitude issues and would consider himself superior and on cloud nine but in reality, I found him cute, good looking and down to earth. It is very easy to work with him as he has no air about himself. I have shot with him for 2 days and hopefully, I will get to know him better as the shoot progresses.
