They love white skin. The appreciation for Brown skin is either to show that they're woke, or they just find it "exotic".

I can’t tell you how many times I have been mistaken as hispanic, arabic, iranian, etc...just because my skin color apparently is “too light” to be “Indian”.

Oh damn same. Its because of ancestry and genetics tbh. Many Indians with lighter skin can pass off for the ones you mentioned because there's some history and common genes (except for Hispanics) in those belts...I don't like the term Indo-Aryan but that's what they'd call us. 

On the other hand you'll even find certain Europeans who could easily be Indian with black hair and eyes and olive skin. I had honestly mistaken a class mate of mine at Uni as Indian but she was Greek!
