Maharashtrians and South Indians don't have that ritual. 

Unless performed with proper customary ceremonies and rituals, a Hindu marriage isn't deemed valid under the Hindu Marriage ACT. 

Rituals and ceremonies differ in every region. You have to perform proper rituals of the type of wedding you're having.
