Chapter 33: So this is how it began
Mahesh was a happy and an honest guy. He was a simple man with a great wife and two amazing kids who never got into trouble. Life was perfect for him, he was in a secure job. Sure the pay was not as much as his previous job, but this job came with half the stress. Today started out just as any other day. Lunch done, he was heading back to work when his boss called him into his cabin. Smiling, Mahesh knocked on his boss's door, and said "Sir, can I come in?" "Yes, Mahesh come in. This is Mr Khanna, I think you may have recognized him from your time at the Oberoi offices. Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi has summoned you. In the best interests of our company, I suggest you go with Mr Khanna and then head home. You can take the day off at no loss of pay. We can restart from tomorrow." Said Mr Agarwal.
Promising prasad to every single deity in every single temple he knew of, Mahesh solemnly followed Khanna out.

"Oberoi Mansion...again! God save me." Thought Mahesh as he stepped in and was quietly lead to Shivay's office. Shivay was sitting down in his chair, behind the desk that occupied central space in the huge library. The power emanating through Shivay cowered many a business man with a steel spine, gentler people like Mahesh stood no chance in face of such power. Next to Shivay was an incredibly beautiful woman, who smiled a friendly smile as he entered. "New secretary maybe," thought Mahesh, "for once a woman!," he thought.
"Nice to see you again Mahesh. If you would sit down, we have some questions for you." Said Shivay. And then with a flick of his wrist, Shivay signaled to Anika to speak. "Hi Mr Mahesh, I am Anika. I am a part of the Oberoi legal unit, I had some questions for you. I will double up as your representative in the event that we require you to attest to written information. Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi's legal team is with us via phone. Before we get started, is there something I can do for you?" Asked Anika.
Mahesh, may not be working with Shivay anymore but he knew that accepting an offer to drink/eat and thereby delaying Shivay spelled career suicide. Nodding his head vigorously in negation, Mahesh said "Please let us get started."
"Ok Mr Mahesh," continued Anika in the same easy tone as before, "You were employed as Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi's personal secretary and office administrator between up until July 2010, correct?". "Yes" said Mahesh. "You employed Svetlana in January 2009, right?" Asked Anika. "Yes" said Mahesh again, "In what capacity?" Asked Anika. "She was to be one of my assistants." Said Mahesh. "I see that her performance reviews were quite poor. Can you explain why you gave her such reviews?" Asked Anika. "Well," began Mahesh, maybe now he would get a chance to tell people what really happened, he thought. "She would never do what she was supposed to. She was not in charge of Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi's daily schedule, yet she would often try to make herself aware of his daily appointments. She would often break protocol and attempt to access files and information that strictly did not concern her." Said Mahesh. "I see," said Anika, "Did you not reprimand her of this?" She asked. "I did, I often called her out on this, to which she would say she was just trying to be more useful." Said Mahesh. "Within 6 months of her joining your team, your first assistant resigned. Correct?" Asked Anika. "Yes, he fell ill. No one knew how, but his doctor suspected that he was poisoned." Said Mahesh. "That made Svetlana your first assistant right?" Said Anika. "Yes" nodded Mahesh. "How did she do as first assistant?" Asked Anika. "It was the same problem. In fact I was going to replace her, but, I got fired before that." Said Mahesh. "Can you explain what happened the day you got fired?" Asked Anika. Taking a deep breath, Mahesh began "Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi had a very important and top secret meeting in Milan. All of us spent days in planning and scheduling the various parts of the meeting. It was a very important deal for him. A day before the meeting, I caught Svetlana accessing Mr Singh Oberoi's private schedule. I reprimanded her of the same. The next day Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi, made a last minute change in plans and instead of driving down to the airport in his vehicle, he took other transportation to his factory in Pune. Instead of Mr Shivay, Mr Tej Singh Oberoi took his vehicle. That day, the breaks of Mr Shivay's car failed and Mr Tej Singh Oberoi got into an accident..." Trailed of Mahesh.
"Svetlana was the one to rescue him correct?" Asked Shivay, speaking for the first time since the entire conversation started. "Yes, Sir" said Mahesh. "Mr Mahesh, please continue" said Anika. "I smelled something fishy, because the breaks were deliberately failed and very very few people knew which car was going to be used. I suspected Svetlana, since I knew she was sneaking around the office and also because she did not come in on the day of the accident. Also, ever since she joined, she would try to get close to Mr Oberoi and dress provocatively in the few meeting that she was present in that had Mr Oberoi. When I began to question her of the same, she accused me of sexual misconduct and blamed Mr Tej Singh Oberoi's accident on me. Mr Shivay Singh Oberoi, fired me right away." Finished Mahesh.
An uncomfortable silenced ensued. "Thank you for your cooperation Mr Mahesh." Said Anika. "Are you willing to attest to this in writing?" She asked. "Yes" said Mahesh. "Very well then. I will draw up the appropriate paperwork. Please excuse me." Said Anika and rose to leave.
Ten silent minutes passed before Anika was back with the paperwork. "Thank you for your cooperation Mr Mahesh." Said Anika as Mahesh finished signing all the papers.
"Mahesh," said Shivay, "I see that there may have been an oversight in dealing with your termination. If you wish, you can join as a Tier 1 Manager with Mr Shakti Singh Oberoi's business wing. His current manager has retired and has not yet been replaced. Your salary shall be double your existing paycheck with other benefits. Khanna will escort you out and provide you paperwork for this offer within the hour. If you choose to accept, you may join as soon as possible." Saying so Shivay signaled for Khanna to escort Mahesh out.

"Mr Oberoi, you amaze me!" Began Anika. "You could have thanked him! Wait, you should have apologized to him for wrongfully firing him" chided Anika.
"Dont you dare give me advice. Are you not a part of Bade papa's legal council? What makes you think you can advise me?" Asked Shivay.
"You know what, you are a lost cause!" Sighed Anika. "But coming back to the point here, clearly you were the one Svetlana tried to honeytrap. When she failed she moved on to Mr Tej Singh Oberoi..." said Anika.
"Yeah So?" Asked Shivay. "I am a little curious. Mr Tej Singh Oberoi is always rumored to have affairs with other women. Rumors that have never been proven. Why did Svetlana not start with him?why you?" Asked Anika. "How dare you insult my Bade Papa!!" Thundered Shivay, "What gives you the right to slander Tej Singh Oberoi. Who the hell do you think you are?" He continued.
"Mr Oberoi, please!" Said Anika, "You are missing the point here. I am not casting any personal remark on Mr Tej Singh Oberoi. I am merely voicing a thought." She continued.
"I think Anika is right" said Jahnvi.
"But Badi Ma!" Said Shivay, "How dare she," "Tell the truth about Tej?" Asked Jahnvi. "You are missing the point here Shivay. If Svetlana's goal was to trap Tej, she should have started with him. But she started with you. That is something to think about." Said Jahnvi with panic setting into her voice.

"Jethji and his dramas!" Thought Pinky for the umpteenth time, "Hai, why does he do this to Jethaniji. That too, jab Jethaniji is so pretties and so smarts. And this time because of him, poor Billu has to do all the running around. Poor Billu's business will also get affected. Hmmph!" She thought and rolled her eyes. "Thank god Shakti ji was not like Jethaniji. Sure he didn't earn as much, but bhai at least this drama was not there. Sure he was a player in their jawaani like that Rudy, but shadi ke baad sudhar gaye!" Thought Pinky thanking her stars.
"Arrey poor Om!" She thought now thinking about that one person, she loved the most after, well no, the one person she loved as much as she loved Shivay. He was the only one who never made her feel flawed, thought Pinky. "Bechara bacha, chalo I will talks to him and come." She thought, making her way to meet Om. ******************************************************************
"Anika what are you saying?" Asked Om. "You think Shivay was the initial target?" He added.
"Well Om, there is something here. I can't say for sure, till I know more about this. But, it just strikes me odd, that if all Svetlana wanted to do was to get money and marry your dad, then why did she not start there?I mean people know how difficult your brother is. Target or not, there must be some reason why Svetlana started with Shivay's office. Moreover, the day of the accident, there is no way she would have known that Shivay would swap his car for some other means of transportation." Said Anika
"Hai Mera Billu!" Exclaimed Pinky and Kalyani in unison. Anika and Om turned to find Dadi and Pinky at the doorway with a plate of samosas now scattered around them. "Wow the Oberoi's move so noiselessly!" Thought Anika.
"Om, bol yeah Anika kya tells rahi hai!" Demanded Pinky as every inch of her features registered panic. "Choti mom," began Om in his reassuring tone, "Please come sit." he said drawing in Pinky for a hug and leading her to a sofa. Anika repeated the same action with Kalyani. "We found out today, that Svetlana first started working in Shivay's office before she started working for Mr Oberoi. So, Anika was just saying that maybe she targeted Shivay first." Said Om.
"Bilkul corrects Anika tells." Said Pinky. "Mera Shivay, does so much work and is so much more successful. I am sure she wanted to harm him. But he is my Shivay na, so he would not have let her near him. But Jethji, he will hold anyone's pallu. Bechari jethaniji. I will not forgive him if Shivay is in trouble because of him." ended Pinky with a sigh.
"You have my promise Choti mom, I won't spare him either if Shivay is harmed." Promised Om.
"I will be back." Said Kalyani and left Om's room. "I will see to her!" Mouthed Anika to Om and followed Kalayni out.
"Dadi, wait please!" Said Anika. "Sorry Dadi, I did not mean to speak ill of Mr Oberoi." Said Anika. "Oh no Anika!" said Kalyani. "It was just too much for me to take in. I know Tej has his flaws, but he will never harm Shivay. I just know that!" Said Kalyani. "I know Dadi, but I am a little worried about Billuji myself. I am sure he handles all this regularly, but Svetlana seems to have caused trouble where it matters the most." Said Anika.
"Chalo puttar, lets go talk to them!" Said Kalyani. ************************************************************************
"Bade Papa, please" said Shivay, "Please explain to Badi Ma that she is worrying for no reason. Why should we panic based on some thought that barely qualified legal rep has?." Said Shivay.
"Come on Shivay." Said Tej, "You know she raised a valid point. You are denying it, so that we do not panic. But it is clear that she has a very strong and valid point. Besides, you said Mahesh said that Svetlana would try to snoop around your office. Surely he did not make that up." Continued Tej.
"Tej beta!" Said Kalyani from the doorway. "Great!" Said Shivay, "You went and brought Dadi in on this. Did they not teach you client confidentiality?" Thundered Shivay to Anika.
"Mr Oberoi, again in case your forgot, you are not my client. I work for Mr Tej Singh Oberoi. Also, I did not say anything to Dadi. Om did" she added.
"Shivay please!" Said Tej, "Now is not the time to fight with Anika. Param is on his way. We need to discuss this further. I called in Shakti too. I think he needs to know. In the time we wait for Param, can you make me a list of your most dangerous business rivals? Jahnvi can you please take Ma out?" Added Tej turning to Jahnvi.
"Dadi," said Shivay hugging the old woman, "Please go with Badi Ma now. I promise, I will come to you and tell you everything once I am done here." He said.
Leaving the three of them waiting for Param, Jahnvi and Kalyani left.
"Anika, is there something else you want to add to your thoughts for the day?" Asked Tej.
"Yes Mr Oberoi. I think we need to know where Svetlana came from. That may be a key to many things. I am convinced now that its likely most of her documents are fake." Said Anika.
"Shivay, I think we need to start looking into that." Said Tej.
Much as he hated it, Shivay had to admit, "I already did Bade Papa. Her documents are not fake." Said Shivay cooly.
"Oh!" said Anika and Tej in unison.
