She started her career by featuring in Ekta Kapoor's Hum Paanch. Not in her weirdest dream she had thought she will be the leading lady in the filmdom. The beauty all the way from South, Vidya Balan is known as critics delight.
Vidya Balan was born in a South Indian Tamil speaking Brahmin family in Palghat, Kerala, India. Her father P.R. Balan, who is the Vice-President of ETC Channel and her mom is a home-maker. She also has an elder sister, Priya, who is married to Kedar.
Vidya Balan's family shifted to Mumbai when Vidya was very young. They used to stay in Chembur. She studied in St. Anthony's Convent School, and thereafter in St. Xavier's College from where she obtained a degree in Sociology.
She also studied and performed in Prithvi Theaters' workshops. Vidya learned Carnatic dance for few years in her childhood days.
Vidya Balan was little plump in her school days. Since she had the ambition to make it big in Bollywood she shed all those extra kilos later she elected to opt for modeling and movies.
Her first break was in a Malyalam film Malyalam movie 'Chakram' opposite Mohanlal, however, the project was shelved, and she had to wait until 1998 to debut in a Surf Excel commercial. She completed nearly 90 such ads.
She appeared in three music videos for Pankaj Udhas, Euphoria, and Shubha Mudgal in supporting roles. She then also appeared in two TV serials Ekta Kapoor's 'Hum Paanch', and Ashok Pandit's 'Hanste Khelte'.
During 2003 she was signed-up to play a role in a Bengali movie 'Bhaalo Theko' opposite Joy Sengupta. This project was completed during the year 2006, and was a considerable hit.
Her debut film in bollywood was with Parinita in 2006 Vidya directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Vidya had to go through 40 screen tests and 17 make-up shoots before she was finally chosen for the lead role in the film.
After all her hard work Parineeta did a wonderful decent business. Later she did lot of films in Bollywood where her performance was critically acclaimed. She was last seen in No One Killed Jessica which did well at the box office.
Presently she is shooting for Ekta Kapoor's The Dirty Picture which is based on real life story of South actress Silk Smitha.
Worked in approximately ninety ad films, before debuting in Parineeta (2005).She has established a career in Bollywood and is the recipient of several awards, including a National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards, and five Screen Awards, and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2014. She is known for portraying strong female protagonists and has been acknowledged in the media for pioneering a change in the concept of a Hindi film heroine. Contrary to media speculations she was never part of the film 'Run'. Her upcoming films are Begum Jaan,Kamala Das Biopic (Malyalam) and Kahaani 2
It is heard that Vidya Balan is dating Siddharth Roy Kapoor the head of UTV Motion Pictures. She was seen holidaying with him in Goa.
There is something very consistent about Vidya Balan - she consistently gives great performances onscreen and she consistently tops the 'worst dressed celebrity list' off screen.
