I think this is why so many love marriages fail within 1-2 years. Emotional connectivity and understanding all develop over many years. It's downright unrealistic to expect that to happen before marriage. I mean, if we look around us and analyze couples who have been married 30+ years, we can totally see how emotionally connected they are. They would not have had that connection 30 years previously, because everyday you spend with your partner, you learn more about them. As for love, there is absolutely no such thing as love at first sight. That is not love but attraction. Love is the emotional connection people desire in marriage, and that forms gradually for everyone.

This is why so many love marriages fail even today. People have unrealistic expectations when it comes to marriage. They want love, intimacy, and emotional connection all at once, and that too immediately. If they do not feel that love soon into their marriage, they fear that there is no point in staying in the relationship, and divorce seems the easiest way out.

A successful marriage requires patience, compromise, and good communication skills. If a couple has these, then love automatically follows in its own pace.

I also agree that Indian television is overrated when it comes to "the consummation". Most Indian couples consummate on the wedding night, because like many said here, love is not required for consummation. If there is mutual attraction between a couple, they can still consummate happily. Love before sex is an overrated principle because like I mentioned already, love grows gradually over the years. Physical attraction/intimacy is one of the factors that contribute towards falling in love, so there's not wrong if a couple consummates their marriage before they fall in love.
