Chapter-2
What on earth was going on!!
Before he could stop himself, Parth whirled round and stared intensely into the darkness, desperately trying to detect any unusual movement. His blood almost turned to ice when he spotted the taller figure larking ominously over the tinier one, trapping her to a corner.
"Vibha, please, no one is here." Rishabh's voice was unnaturally husky. "We are getting married. Please sona, let me love you...once, please.
Otherwise I will go insane, Vibha. Every time I look at you...and I think of you, how it will feel to love you, sona." He sounded like he was about to lose his mind.
"Rishabh. STOP IT! Please, DON'T DO THIS TO ME! GOD, this is so wrong." Vibha was clearly sobbing. Each word came out with a little gasp.
"Why is it so wrong? Oh come on Vibha, we are going to husband and wife, for God's sake. You will be mine, in a few days. Don't you want me...to make love to you? Or is it something else that's bothering you?
Jabse humari engagement fix hui hai, I can see it that you're not happy...and it makes me wonder why!" Rishabh sounded impatient and angry at the same time.
"There's nothing like that. Now, please let go off me. You're hurting me, Rishab." Vibha struggled to free her arm from his steely grip.
Rishabh paid no heed to her pleading. He tightened his grip on her shoulder, leaned closer and forcefully tried to capture her mouth. Vibha resisted with all her strength, but he was too strong for her. She didn't know how much longer she could keep fighting.
Tears of helplessness rolled down her cheek. "Don't do this, please. I trusted you." She muttered like a prayer, vaguely aware that her prayer might not get answered tonight.
Suddenly, a rack behind them rattled, scattering a few books to the ground. Vibha heard approaching footsteps. The brutal force on her arms and shoulders was immediately released as Rishabh stepped back from her hastily.
Vibha ran blindly towards the light. At that moment, she couldn't think of anything else but to put as much distance as possible between herself and the man she called her fiancee.
In her mad rush to escape, she failed to notice the books scattered on the floor and stumbled on one of them.
She lost balance and swayed for a few moments, before hitting the floor.
************************************************************
Vibha closed her eyes, mentally bracing herself for the impact, but it never came.
Instead she found herself falling into a pair of strong arms, that held her in a surprisingly gentle embrace.
Vibha opened her eyes slowly, feeling a painful pang of fear and embarrassment in her heart. With great difficulty, she finally managed to look at the stranger who had chosen to arrive like God's answer to her prayers.
She found the familiar pair of dark black eyes looking back at her.
It was none other than Parth Samthaan.
At that moment, Vibha wished she could disappear from the face of the earth. She was secretly praying it wasn't HIM...that it was anyone else, NOT HIM.
*But it had to be Him, of course. That's how fate works. In some twisted, dark way that's beyond our.* Vibha was dying inside.
Parth held on to her till she regained her balance and her senses, to some extent. Then he shifted his focus to the man standing in front of them.
Rishabh showed no sign of remorse or guilt. He stood there, silently eyeing Parth and the way he took care of Vibha.
A silent vibe seemed to be exchanged between the two men. Parth kept his eyes on him as well, without blinking or flinching.
After about five minutes of this cold war, Rishabh finally gave up and rather mercifully, decided to leave the premises.
He didn't even throw Vibha a glance before walking off silently.
Vibha's eyes burnt with un-shed tears. She slowly dropped to her knees and buried her face in her hands. Her entire frame was shaking with silent sobs.
Parth wanted to take her in his arms. He wanted to tell her that everything would be fine. Instead, he let her cry her heart out, till he heard her coughing and gasping for breath.
"It's not your fault." Parth dropped to his knees and gently squeezed her hands. "Let it go. Nothing happened. I swear, it was NOTHING!" He rubbed comforting circles at the back of her hands.
Gradually, the tremors that were rocking her body seemed to diminish. She wiped her face with her black dupatta and straightened herself up again.
Her eyes were swollen and pink from all the crying. The rim of her eyes was smudged with kajal . Yet, to Parth, she looked like the most beautiful woman ever.
"Chaliye, main aap ko aap ke quarters tak chhod deta hoon." Parth tore his eyes off her, fearing that his true feelings for her might show through his eyes.
"No, Parth. I am fine. Tum apne dorm-room mein jaa ke araam kar lo. Waise bhi raat bahut ho gayi hai." Vibha kept staring at the floor. She couldn't meet his eyes, which was brimming with so much concern for her.
"Please, mam. I want to make sure you are fine. Please, at least mere liye maan jayie." Parth begged.
Vibha sighed and nodded. It was impossible to say 'no' to this boy. Besides, Vibha's little lodge is about ten minutes walk from the main building of the school.
After tonight's incident, the thought of crossing that distance in darkness alone undeniably brought an uneasy feeling to her mind.
When the two of them stepped outside the building, a chilly, stormy wind greeted them. The overcast sky hung above like a thick black velveteen curtain.
"Mam, lagta hai baarish hone wali hai. We should hurry up." Parth felt the chill hitting his bones.
Vibha noticed him shivering in his light blue T-shirt. She cursed herself inwardly for putting him through this ordeal.
*Why do you care for me so much, Parth?* she wanted to ask, but she couldn't.
She was afraid to hear his answer.
Instead, she gave him a weak smile and said "Chalo chalte hai."
