Dear Friends,
I got bored writing Kasamh Se and also ran out of ideas. Few of my friends of the forum were saying they were missing my original FFs and could not live the horror of KS again, though I tried to be as different from the serial as possible. So here is A New Dawn, specially for my friend the doctor without whose help I am not able to write any medical situation in my FFs...Do let me know how you like it, I love reading your comments....

A New Dawn
The matron looked at the man sitting opposite her, a middle aged man with an air of sophistication and class, his eyes were strained, he was a man not used to too much of tension and worries, loved easy life, summed up the matron…
You have been referred by a man whom I cannot refuse but….
I have come with a lot of hope Mrs Nair….
I understand Mr Bali, the matron tapped her fingers, how long can you wait for me…
Mr Aditya Bali looked at his watch, 1 hour, that is the time I will take to drive down to our home…
You mean you cannot give me more time,
Yes Mrs Nair, you see I am coming straight from Dr Roy's hospital, I caught him before he entered the operation theatre, he wrote this letter in his operation gown as you do not take calls in the morning…
Yes in the mornings I take my rounds and hate to be disturbed, so my mobile is switched off…
Mr Bali smiled, Dr Roy said you are the best…
The matron smiled stiffly, she was one of those ladies literally married to her work, no nonsense types whom you will not like to annoy…
She sighed, picked up her roster, went through all the names…
O.K Mr Bali, I have only one girl to spare, who can somewhat meet your criteria…she has been trained by me so I know her quality of work…but then….
She picked up the telephone and asked someone to send Bani in….
But then what sister, Aditya looked at her face…
You see her, just then there was a soft knock on the door, sister may I come in, asked a soft voice…
Yes Bani come in my dear….
Aditya saw a girl entering the room, dressed in Nurses' Uniform, she looked smart in her starched neat and clean uniform, the cap sitting prettily on her head, she had a soft look with innocent eyes and shy smile…
This is Miss Bani Dixit, Mr Bali, immediately I can spare her only….
But sister, I mean the doctor in his letter….
Yes experienced nurses capable of handling difficult patient….Mr Bali, the letter is from Dr Roy, a man for whom I am sitting on this chair, who has given me a second lease of life….yes Mr Bali I will not let him down, you take this girl with you as because the other two persons whom I can trust with such a critical patient, one is not too well at the moment and the other has taken leave as her son is getting married…after a week she will be free in the meantime Bani will substitute as you cannot wait any longer, after a week I will replace Bani with Mrs Rao….
Aditya gave a faint smile, looked at Bani once again then at the matron who was staring back steadily…
O.K as you say Mrs Nair, he got up….
Sister, Bani asked…
You go with Mr Bali, the patient is in his house, regarding whom he will brief you on the way, your duty hours will be 7 to 7 i.e you will give him his breakfast and leave after his dinner, Mr Bali will pay Rs.1000/- per day for your services, out of which Rs.200/- you have to give it to our fund, plus transportation charges. Incase you work more than 12 hours, you will be paid Rs.100/- per extra hour worked….Bani stared at the sister, she did not interrupt her but her mind was throwing up all sort of questions but knowing the matron Bani kept quiet.,
I understand I have to leave now? Asked Bani…
Yes, you are right,
In that case I will just go pick my purse and my tiffin…I will meet you in the main entrance say in 5 minutes, Bani informed in true professional manner…

When Aditya left, Mrs Nair leaned to stretch her self, at 50, she has come a long way from a little village girl who loved her studies dreamt about becoming a doctor was forcefully married off at the age of 17 only to discover that her husband was a drunkard and mother-in-law a tyrant…one day she could not take it any more, carrying out the household work from early morning to night, getting beaten by her husband because he just felt like it and without most of the days retiring to bed without dinner as her mother-in-law thought she did not need food, had its effect on Suhasini Nair, one fine day she ran away, got up early morning for her rituals, went to station and got up in the first available train….the train she met a Bengali family who had come to spend their holidays in Kerala, their son is a doctor in Chennai's eye Hospital….during the journey with her broken English was able to convey her condition, though the Roys did not understand her exact words but they were intelligent to understand that she was suffering, case of wife beating as she showed them her marks…
On reaching Chennai they were received by their son and daughter-in-law at the station…
The son worked for Shankar Netralaya as a junior doctor, he got a nurse from his hospital to know Suhasini's exact story, her dreams and soon Suhasini found herself working in the hospital as a cleaner, a casual staff, Dr Roy ensured that she worked during the day and in the evening attended school, while Suhasini shared room with some of her mates from Kerala, she was most welcome to visit his house whenever she felt homesick, Dr Roy's parent's, his wife treated her special meals, provided her with clothes and some basic necessities, when Suhasini realized she was pregnant with her husband's child, Suhasini wanted to abort but the family did not allow it, you will atleast have someone to call your own, they stood by her, baby sat her son so that Suhasini could finally complete her nursing training…
Mrs Nair got up, went out of the room to see Aditya and Bani standing at the main door of the hospital, obviously waiting for the car to come up, she felt a bit satisfied as she knew Bani needed money desperately as she took care of her sisters and some extra money will do her good, not that she was not capable but at times patients and their family members expect too much, she likes Bani's self reliance at the same time, she appreciates Bani doesn't compromise with her work, if she can stick on, it will not only be a learning experience but also monetarily beneficial.

Bani looked out of the window, she would like to know about the patient but Aditya was speaking on his mobile, some office problem it seems, Rs.1000/- per day, Rs.800 a day for her, Bani was surprised by the amount, she has been working in this hospital for last one year, lucky to get a break with such a big hospital but Mrs Nair who took classes at their institute had spotted her, so she lucky few who did not have hunt for job, she was hired by the agency whom Mrs Nair patronizes, which provides nurses to all the leading hospitals of Mumbai, the normal charge is Rs.500 i.e Rs.300/- for the nurse, why did Mrs Nair double it, is it a very difficult patient, rich no doubt, the type of car they were traveling in ….Aditya disconnected the phone….Bani looked at him towards him…
Mr Bali, if I can know something about the patient please…
Yes Miss Dixit, yes of course….the patient is my brother-in-law Jai Walia…

The car entered a big bungalow type house, atleast 100 years old if not more, good god thought Bani, I thought the Ambanis were richest in this country, Ambani or that software guy, keya naam tha Azimji…anyway, Bani shook herself and got down followed Aditya in….they entered the hall to see two distress looking ladies sitting, the younger lady sprang up seeing Aditya….
You got someone, she asked….
Yes, Aditya moved to show Bani standing…
Her? The lady could not believe….
Yes, she was the only competent one available…
Tumhara dimaag toh nehi kharab ho giya Aditya, don't you have eyes…Jai will not take 5 minutes to get rid of her….tumse toh ek kaam bhi theek se nehi hota…
Now cool down Jigyasa don't scare off the girl, Mrs Nair assured me that she is the best she can give me at the moment, she told me not to go by her looks and said by next week her senior nurse will be available…till then, I guess we have to take her help…
Till next week if she survives that is…Jigyasa commented sarcastically, looking up and down at Bani….
Bani cringed, she did not know why, she hated to be looked down upon…
Abh bus bhi karo, jo hai usse lekar chalo…
Ma ji aap lekar jayo, mujhe aur gaali nehi sunna hai, aapka bete ne laya hai and of course you will not see any fault in that....the lady stomped away...
The old lady looked at her son…
Aditya turned towards Bani, I will show you Jai's room…

Bani followed Aditya what it seemed like a long corridor, she could hear the clicking of their heels, the house was very quiet and cold, Bani wished she could turn back and leave but that means letting the sister down, proving she is not capable and it was just a matter of a week, so in a week she will earn much needed extra money and prove her capability…
At the end of the corridor, Aditya knocked and opened the door…
Jai Jai he called out....Bani saw a semi darkened room...
Keya hai Aditya a man said replied gruffly...
Well Aditya entered further and said ah well will you stand up, let me introduce you to your new nurse.....
I am a sick man, I cannot stand up you bring the nurse here...
Aditya gestured Bani to enter, Bani wrinkled her nose, the room had a peculiar smell of liquor, antiseptics and smoke.....it was a big room with most of the curtains drawn, it had a stuffy feeling, Aditya walked towards the high back chair where the voice was coming from...
Ah finally got to see you, Good morning Jai, this is your nurse Miss Bani Dixit...
Miss Bani Dixit, repeated the man who was sitting on the chair, grumpy, tousled, unshaven but much younger than Bani had presumed....his face curled with disgust, Miss Bani Dixit he repeated again...you got a female nurse for me Aditya...it is a she...he stated looking very angry...his eyes squinted and he looked very upset...
Umm yeah actually Dr Roy thinks that you need some delicate handling....
Dr Roy, who the hell is Dr Roy to think like that, I , I mean you want me to make a mess of myself in front of a woman, who will help me with my....you know what....he shouted on top of his voice...
Thank you Mr Bali, Bani said calmly, I take in on from here....

Aditya went out of the room and pulled it shut with a definite click, Dr Roy was so right, he thought, this should work, he agreed with the doc, while Jai it treated and bullied his male nurses, with the female one's he will somewhat be on guard, hopefully so....
