'Zindgai', the word that encapsulates everything there is to a healthy
life. The show started with Lara Dutta drawing everyone's attention to
the dangers of AIDS that the country faces and in particular talking
about the social stigma surrounding the issue. Javed Akhtar talked

Kailash
Kher and Mahalaxmi Iyer were the first to perform in the popular
category. They chose an old Guru Dutt song from the 1950's. Kailash
mentioned that during all this time that the show has been on, they
have tried to make people aware of various issues and even if they have
been able to influence 25% of the people, he would consider the
objective fulfilled. The judges liked their song and found it very apt
for the theme of the show. Javed Akhtar then talked about how rampant
polio is in South Asia and the need to campaign against it.

Naresh and Shweta came next and sang 'Chak De Saare Gum' from the film
Hum Tum. According to them they chose this song because they feel
people should worry less since stress is causing a number of ailments
these days. The judges found their thinking too simplistic. They liked
the song but did not feel that it connected to the theme of spreading
awareness about more serious diseases that afflict the third world.
Sunali
and Roop Kumar Rathod came next with the title track from Kal Ho Na Ho.
Roop talked about the lack of medical facilities in rural areas and the
need for doctors to focus more on such areas instead of making money.
The judges said that even though the song was beautifully composed,
written and sung, it was not appropriate to the theme. Roop defended
their choice of song by saying that the song talks about living life to
the fullest since we don't know what the future has in store for us.
Therefore, it is important to take utmost care of one's health.
Vasundhara
and Mohit were the last jodi to perform in the popular category. They
sang the old song, 'Babu Samjho Ishare' from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and
gave an interesting explanation for their song. They drew parallels
between life and an automobile and the need for people to have regular
check ups to ensure a healthy life. This was just like they need to
check their automobiles regularly to maintain them in good condition.
The couple especially talked about the need for people to get HIV tests
done. The judges were really impressed with the couple's ability to
innovatively connect the song to the theme.
Kailash
and Mahalaxmi opened the 'original song' round. Kailash talked about
how other living creatures like animals and birds can teach us to lead
a clean, healthy and safe life. The judges found their song articulate
and well sung. Mohit and Vasundhara came next and explained how
challenging it had been to compose for the theme based on health. They
sang a peppy dance number celebrating life. Rahman was not too
impressed but Javed and Lara found it an interesting perspective to the
issue. The episode ended with anchor Simone Singh signing off.
Health Care (Zindagi) :
Episode 15 - (19th January 2008)
The show started with a performance by Naresh Shweta. They sang 'Pal',
the song sung originally by KK in his mellifluous voice. The duo
dedicated this song to all those who are suffering from life
threatening diseases like AIDS and don't have much time on their hands.
They also made an appeal to the people to understand that AIDS is not
contagious, as it is wrongly perceived. Therefore they should stop
being scared of going close to the victims of the disease and show more
affection towards them. The judges liked their song as well as their
appeal and agreed that there is a need to spread awareness about how
the disease is spread so that misconceptions about it can come to an
end.

Kailash
Kher and Mahalaxmi Iyer came next with the song, 'Ruki Ruki Si
Zindagi'. Kailash dedicated the song to Adnan Sami who has lost 100
kilos and become an inspiration for all obese people. Kailash related
Adnan's case to the need for staying healthy. The judges liked the song
as well as the thought but Javed made it a point to mention that in our
country it is not obesity but on the contrary, malnutrition that is the
biggest problem.

Sunali and Roop Kumar Rathod sang a mix of 'Dum Maro Dum' and 'Jane Kya
Hoga Rama Re'. They appealed to the people to say no to drugs as well
as other unhealthy habits like smoking. The judges appreciated the
concept and made the same appeal to the youth of today, since their
lives are too precious to be wasted through such habits.
Mohit and Vasundhara chose to sing 'Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli' from the
Rajesh Khanna starrer Anand. They talked about the need to pay special
attention to health since life is precious. The song touched all the
judges and they appreciated the thought behind it.
It was time for the singers to render their original compositions and
Naresh and Shweta came first. They gave a message to everyone though a
jazz composition, to lead a simple and clean life and fill the lives of
others with love. Javed was reminded of the broadways he saw in New
York, while Rahman was so impressed with the composition that he called
the composer of the song upon the stage. Lara also found the song
extremely innovative and liked the message that the youngest duo had
given.
Sunali
and Roop Kumar Rathod performed a song composed by their 16 year old
daughter. Sunali announced that it was the first time her daughter's
song was being sung before an audience and how proud it made her feel
as a mother. She emphasized the need for people to exercise regularly
and stay healthy. The judges liked the song and Lara congratulated
Sunali on her daughter's composition.
According
to the judges the 'Zindagi' episodes offered the most variety in the
original compositions but still picking the winner had been relatively
easy. Kailash and Mahalaxmi's song was selected as the best original
composition for the UN album. Ma Tujhe Salaam (Save The Environment) :
Episode 16 - (25th January 2008)
This week's episode was dedicated to saving the environment. Lara
talked about the danger that India faces as a result of environment
degradation, particularly because of its enormous population. She
talked about how wars have been fought over petrol and very soon they
will be fought over water. According to Javed, we human beings are out
to destruct ourselves, by destroying the very environment that nurtures
us. He expressed his shock at seeing how polluted Ganga has become, the
same river that is worshipped by us. Jamuna in Delhi looks like a
dumping site for industrial waste

Kailash
Kher and Mahalaxmi Iyer were the opening singers. They sang the
patriotic 'Vande Matram'. Both Mahalaxmi and Kailash talked about how
proud they are of being Indian and made an appeal to all those who love
their country, to do everything to save its environment. The judges
liked the song and found it perfect for opening the episode. Lara then
drew attention to the issue of Global Warming.

The young Jodi of Naresh and Shweta came next with Rahman's composition 'Awara Bhanvare' from Sapney. According
to Shweta the reason they chose the song is because the song talks of a
world of natural beauty and peace and that is the kind of utopian world
that they wished for. Lara told the young jodi that on a show like
this, what would help is if all jodis offered some solutions to the
problem instead of simply talking about the problem. According to her
even their singing this time was not as good as it usually tends to be.
Javed then gave a message saying that people should not lose hope
because there is still time to save the earth. Rahman talked about the
need to preserve open and green spaces in our cities like they have
done in a city like London.
Mohit and Vasundhara sang 'Barso Re Megha', again a Rahman composition from the film Guru.
Vasundhara talked about how beautifully the song describes nature and
how these days that beauty is getting depleted and facing various
environmental hazards. She gave a few simple steps that people can
follow to make a difference, like using CFL instead of bulb or using
Khus curtains instead of always depending on A.Cs. Rahman found their
point of view nave while Javed thought the solution of switching to
alternate energy is an extremely sensible one. Lara also found the
solutions mentioned by the Jodi, feasible. According to her while
economic development was important for the country, it also needed to
be accompanied by sensitivity towards the environment.
Sunali and Roop Kumar Rathod performed the old song, 'Suhana Safar Aur
Yeh Mausum Hasin'. Roop mentioned that while travel was enjoyable in
the past, it has become a suffering now. He brought along a mask and
mentioned how these days people have to visit oxygen bars in order to
get some fresh. The judges liked their song, as well as their message
and spoke about how we need to cut down on our traffic.
In the original composition round, Naresh and Shweta came first and
performed a folk song. The Jodi talked about the power of nature and
the small steps we can all take to preserve it. The judges really liked
the composition. According to Javed the tune can become an instant hit,
if it ever comes in a film. Listening to the song, Rahman felt
transported to the hills.
Kailash
Kher and Mahalaxmi came next with a song that was really close to their
hearts. According to Kailash if we refer to someone as our mother, we
also have a certain duty and responsibility towards them. Similarly we
have a responsibility towards our earth. The judges really liked the
song, both the lyrics as well as the tune. Javed pointed out one line
in the song that confused him, which once taken out will make the song
perfect. They make an appeal to the audiences and the episode was
drawn to an end.
Ma Tujhe Salaam (Save the Environment) :
Episode 17 - (26th January 2008)
The show opened with Mohit and Vasundhara singing the old song, 'Khilte
Hain Gul Yahan'. Vasundhara talked about how her home town Bangalore,
which was once called the 'garden city', is now fast losing that status
with the chopping of trees and growing congestion. She made an appeal
to stop cutting trees. Rahman complimented the jodi's singing style by
saying that they sounded like Neil Diamond. Lara said since she is also
from Bangalore, she could relate very well to Vasundhara's thought. She
made an appeal to everyone to plant a tree on their
|
|
birthdays.
However, according to Javed the song had no connection to the theme of
the show because the song in reality is a philosophical song, talking
about the futility of life. |
|
Sunali
and Roop Kumar Rathod came next with a song from Lagaan, 'Ghanan Ghanan
Ghir Aye Badra'. While talking about the rain song, Roop mentioned how
the ozone layer is being depleted and if this situation remains very
soon, we will have no roof to protect us. Sunali appealed that even if
people are not able to plant trees, they should atleast make the effort
to grow a small Tulsi plant in their homes. Reacting to the rain song,
Javed said that it is a pity that even in the 21st century we have to
depend on the monsoons for agriculture. He emphasized the need for
water harvesting,

preservation. Lara praised their singing as well as their choice of
song. Rahman also praised their performance and said that in our
country we need to take more action to preserve nature as well as fight
its fury, through disaster management.
Naresh and Shweta came next with the song, 'Tu Hawa Hai Fiza Hai' from the film Fiza. Shweta
appealed to people to save water and protect the environment and said
she would do the same. Naresh talked about the dangers of using
plastic. Kailash Kher and Mahalaxmi were the last Jodi to sing in the
'popular song' category. They sang the title track from Rang De Basanti.
Mahalaxmi mentioned the small steps that she takes for a greener world-
not drive atleast 5 days a month, switch off all electrical appliances
when not being used and stop wasting paper. The judges and in
particular Javed praised the Jodi immensely, calling them intelligent
and large hearted with an amazing voice to match.
Mohit and Vasundhara were the first to perform their original song.
Vasundhara and Mohit asked people not to take their environment for
granted and show more respect for it. The judges were impressed with
the simplicity and the clarity of the song.
Sunali and Roop Kumar Rathod came next with their original song.
According to Roop even though we can never create nature not control
it, we can atleast do our best to preserve it. The judges announced
that this time it was going to be tough for them to pick the best song,
since all four were very good compositions. They finally announced
Sunali and Roop Kumar's original song as the winner since it was
composed and performed beautifully and had a crisp message as well.
