A reel-ly good deal!

Actor Sanjeev Mehra is borrowing the elaborate wedding sets of Deeya Singh's Anu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah, for his real-life wedding on December 9

Marriages may be made in heaven but some are performed on the serial sets. This is exactly what happened with Sanjeev Mehra, who plays the lead girl's father in Tony and Deeya Singh's new show Anu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah on Star One.

While the unit was shooting for a wedding sequence at Chitrarth Studio hall, Powai, Sanjeev got a bright idea - he requested the producers if he could have his own wedding, which is scheduled for December 9, on the sets at the same venue. Tony and Deeya happily agreed.

Sanjeev started dating an Australian girl Rita Weisse, whom he met on the sets of Left right Left (where he was playing Suri) two months ago, their love blossomed and now they are all set to get married.

Says producer, Deeya Singh, "These two started dating each other recently. Rita  was just a guest on our show and then the rest is history. His Australian girlfriend is completely besotted with Indian weddings. When Sanjeev requested us to let him get married on our set we happily agreed.

We will be shooting for three days for the show and thereafter we will give away the set for one day for Sanjeev's wedding. We are not giving away the bride, but the wedding venue for Sanjeev's wedding. It will be a typical Punjabi style wedding, complete with the mehendi, baraat, phera ceremony. There will be real guests and relatives at the wedding."

Says Sanjeev, "Rita and I met three months ago on the sets of LRL and kept in touch. We realised that we liked each other a lot and started dating.

Everyone approved of our relationship. It will be a lavish wedding and my family and relatives have come down. The wedding will be on December 9. To begin with, we are having a barbeque party and then the actual wedding."

The show's costume designer, Nisha Bedi Singh, will be designing the couple's wedding dress too.

Here comes a new TV soap

December 04, 2007 13:23 IST

Another television soap is all set to woo audiences.

Promising 30 minutes of nonstop 'dramedy' (drama plus comedy, in case you are wondering), is Annu Ki Ho Gayee Waah Bhai Waah, to be aired on Star One every Monday to Thursday from December 10.

It centres around Annu, played by 18-year-old Shrijeeta De, who made her television debut as Prerna's granddaughter in Kasauti Zindagi Ki.

"I'm so excited to play my first leading role." said Shrijeeta. "Annu is a lot like me, we both are very close to our family; we both are homely and love cooking. The only difference is that Annu doesn't say much, she doesn't need to... but I'm the opposite, I talk all the time."

The story from DJ's Creative Unit goes like this: Annu comes from a middle-class Punjabi family. She has lived a sheltered life until circumstances force her out of her comfort zone and step out into the real world.

She becomes a chef at an upscale restaurant Victoria, where she faces new trials at every turn. It is also where she meets her prince charming, Ashu (played by Dev), who incidentally happens to be the rich boss' son.

ON A ROLL
Chaya Unnikrishnan
The DJ banner has an impressive track record on the small screen. While Banegi Apni Baat and Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin have been channel-drivers, serials like Just Mohabbat, Jab Love Hua and Left Right Left have proved to be a refreshing changes from the regular fare. Only Jeete Hai Jiske Liye didn't live upto expectations but that's more of an aberration. In a freewheeling interview, Deeya-Tony share their plans and anxieties

With three shows on air and one more scheduled in January, do you feel this is the most exciting phase of your production house?
Let's say it is a phase we are looking forward to, since the entertainment industry is growing and it is exciting to be a part of it. Zee Next and NDTV Imagine with whom we are working have a vision and together we are trying to create something that will break the clutter on TV. How we go about it and how will it be received is something we have to wait and watch. However, the heart's in the right place and our fingers are crossed.

But won't it be tough to handle so many shows simultaneously?
It will be tough but we have had a reasonably good lead time before the shows have come on air. We have been working on the Zee Next's show Jhoome Jiye Re for the last one year. For our NDTV Imagine show, Radha Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi, we have been working closely with their creative director, Shailaja Kejriwal, for eight months. Left Right Left is already going on for almost a year now and Annu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah has just started on Star One. We are giving our 100 per cent to the shows which is why I think, we will be able to pull it off.

A Tony-Deeya show is usually different from the regular fare on television. From where do you source your ideas?
We are lucky to have a good set-up of writers who have been with us since the beginning. Creating new ideas is a team effort. We regularly brainstorm and from one show, another idea is born. For a long time we wanted to do a show on an academy but at that time nobody was interested. When SAB TV envisaged an interest in the concept we developed it and Left Right Left happened.

Didn't you have problems with the lead actor Rajeev Khandelwal?
Not really. He had a one-year contract with us and we knew he would quit after that. We were always prepared for it. He did stay on for four more months before moving on.

Over a decade ago, your Banegi Apni Baat launched with Zee and now Jhoome Jiiya Re is the launch show for Zee . Does that make you nostalgic?
Absolutely. I am feeling like it's the first day of school. Everything has become a challenge. There's a non-comfort zone and you have to develop a rapport with the company. I love challenges and being pushed to come up with something new. The brief for Jhoome Jiiya Re was that we have to create a show that is youthful and fresh. The concept of Jhoome .... is highly inspired from personal experiences we have had with our children in their growing-up phase. The serial is about why nice guys always have to be last. It's about how everyone is special, irrespective of whether they dream of becoming something big or not. Like our protagonist Dabboo says, 'Mein aankhen band karti hoon par sapna nahin dikhta'. She, however, doesn't give up trying. She is good in dance and music but has no clue about it because her father is close-minded and unencouraging. Actually, he's been a loser in his life and the fear that the daughter will be like him nearly kills him. The daughter, then decides to be something in her life and with the aid of her grandmother she finds her calling in dance.

That's completely different from your other show Annu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah on Star One where she's shown to be a chef.
Yes, it's completely opposite to Jhoome... It's about a Punjabi family that is happy with whatever they have. They take setbacks in their stride and lack of money is never an issue. Fame is transient to them, what's important is being together. I have seen such a family from close quarters. The show has a slightly exagerrated style, though. Annu, the protagonist of this show is skilled and confident while Dabboo has to find her calling.

What is the inspiration behind Radha Ki Betiyaan...?
I am highly impressed by people who have come to Mumbai with nothing in their hands and earned everything here, including a home. That's what the serial is about. Radha is a widow with three daughters who land up in the city of dreams for some reason. She comes with little money but is always positive. It's about these three girls who have different personalities but are true to each other. It is about having faith and believing in oneself. The story, which is extremely positive, leads from Radha's perspective. I want to bring a lot of romance in this show and give little nuskas to viewers.

Having worked on almost all the entertainment channels do you think each one has a different profile?
They do, but I wouldn't be able to tell you on a macro level. For instance if I am doing this show for Star One in the 8 pm slot, I know it has be a lighter show as kids will be watching it.

You had a superhit show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin on Sony but Jeete Hai Jiske Liye on the same channel nosedived.
Like Jassi..., Jeete Hai was also a tele-novella. But somewhere around the way, a creative decision was taken to deviate from the original story-telling. It ended up being a regular show that wasn't accepted. We are just the producers who deliver what we are told to.
