Basti
Uma Jajodia (Smriti Irani) - 27 year old woman from the basti. After her brother passed away, Uma was seen as the hope of the basti, inspiring hope even in the midst of defeat and tries her best to see things in a postive light. She is now married into the Jajodia Family. Every turn of her life, a new challenege heads her way, whether it is curing her husband or fighting that very husband for a place to live.
Girija Apte/Ai - Girija Apte, referred to as "Ai" by many is Uma's mother. Respested by many of the basti-wale as a motherly figure. As a profession she used to sell papads and pickles giving that up to take care of her family.
Manohar Apte/Baba - Manohar is Uma's father. He is the leader of the trade union of the basti and respected by all. As family tension grew in his home, he recently commit suicide to get away from the troubles. He is always remembered and missed by his loved ones.
Namita Jajodia - Namita is Uma's younger sister, who recenlt left school. As a young and immature student, she would often create problems in the basti such as she became pregnant. Now grown up, she realised her mistakes and is to married into the Jajodia Family. She recently gave birth to a son.
Sanjay Apte/Sanju (Pawan Shankar) - Sanju is Uma's younger brother. Heir to the Trade Unions throne and also the hope of the basti. He fell in love with Sapna (Uma's friend from the basti). He unfortunately passed away very early on in the show but still appears to Uma whenever she feels like talking to him.
Pooja (Jaya Bhatacharya) - Pooja is Uma's friend of 22 years. Sh eis married to Purshottam who's relationship has developed nicely. She works as a dancer to earn money for her husband. She is always speaking her mind and never afraid to stand up to people who come in her way.
Munna (Sanjit Bedi) -
Gondiya - Gondiya is a very close sweet-hearted friend of the Aptes. As a profession, he picks up rubbish in the city but is too embarrassed to tell people this. He is to seen as a brother figure to Uma; although quieter than Munna, he to often rushes to help Uma when she needs it.
Sapna - Sapna is also Uma's friend of 22 years. She fell in love with Sanju and became pregnant by him. She was too afraid to tell Ai and Baba did but when they eventually found out, they accepted her as their daughter-in-law. She gave birth to a son a few months ago. Sapna is generally a very quite and reserved character.

Jajodia Pariwar
Sudhanshu Jajodia (Kiran Karmarkar) - Sudhanshu Ji is Uma's husband. They've been married for more than a year and have had a series of ups and downs. Uma did not know that Sudhanshu suffered from schizophrenia when they first got married and made it her duty to cure him. Time passed and love grew between the two. Sudhanshu was eventually cured by the right medicines. Unfortunately, when stable, he decided to leave Uma's side and divorce her and destroy the basti.
Dushyant Jajodia (Harsh Chayya) - Dushyant is the younger brother of Sudhanshu. Much the opposite at first, he did everything for his own good. He took over the family business increasing his ego. He often mistreats his wife for not being in love with him and takes on a very selfish character.
Sambhav Jajodia - Sambhav is the youngest brother of Sudhanshu and husband to Namita. At first he followed in Dushyant's footsteps displaying selfishness and using Namita whilst he was dating other girls. He proposed to Namita when he realsied how bad he used to be and also admitted to murdering Sanju so is now in jail. He recently became the proud father of a son.
Sudha Jajodia - Sudha is Dushyant's wife. At first, she kept quiet and took the mistreating of Dushyant, however when the time was right she brought out her confidence and raised her voice. She was in love with Sudhanshu many years ago who rejected her proposal. She now joins hands with Uma and the basti-wale in destroying the Jajodias.
Sunaina Jajodia/Ama (Vidya Sinha) - It was found that Sunaina is actually Sudhanshu's step-mother explaining why she was the one making him ill. She will do anything to get her way, even sacrifice her kids. She has always hated Uma and fought against her in every battle.
Jaya Jajodia - Jaya is Sudhanshu's younger sister. When Uma and Sudhanshu first got married, she was sweet and liked Uma. She is not really shown anymore.
Other
Padhmavati/Masi - Padhmavati is Sudhanshu's biological Masi. She came to the city when she found out Sunaina was giving Sudhanhsu wrong medicines and Uma was fighting a case for him. She does not get on well with Sunaina at all, therefore challenged her and won the court case. She introduced Prashant Rastogi as the lawyer to fight the case.
Prashant Rastogi - Prashant was the lawyer fighting Uma's case. He secretly fell in love with Uma and one day told this to her privately. His plan was to get rid of Sudhanshu. Everyone thought Uma was in the wrong, Sudhanshu to thought the same and thought Uma wanted to divorce him. Prashant made an attack on Uma, who was then murdered by people in the basti secretly.
