The Union Territory of puducherry comprises of four coastal regions viz- puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. puducherry and Karaikal are situated on the East Coasts in Tamil Nadu, Yanam in Andra Pradesh and Mahe on the West Coast in Kerala.

puducherry is the Capital of this Union Territory. It is on the east coast about 162 kms south of Chennai (Madras) located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. There are no hills or forests in this region. The main soil types in this region are red ferrallitic, black clay and coastal alluvial.

Main languages spoken in the region are Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. English and French are other languages, which are spoken by a considerable number of people. Majorities of the people are Hindus. There are quite a number of Christians and Muslims, whereas very few Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists.

If we look at the economies of India, Tamil Nadu where only the great Tamil is spoken is the #2 industrialized state in the county. It is Top 3 is foreign direct investment, most number of automotive companies, diverse economic resources etc etc etc etc etc...

Now, tell me why should I spend time to learn Hindi so I can do business with other states that are in the bottom of the rankings. Why should I waste time to learn Hindi so that I can speak with Mayawati, Mulayam Singh, Mamta Banerjee etc.

Tell me about it? Does it make any economic sense to me to learn Hindi?

Here's what I suggest:
(1) First develop your economy so that it's comparable to Tamil Nadu and other southern states
(2) Be law abiding citizens and respect the rule of law in your states
(3) Learn to respect other cultures and languages

Then we will come back to the language issue. Till then, I'd suggest you focus on putting your house in order. I can be more expletive, but I chose to follow my own advice.

So, those who profess Hindi as the common language, I'd suggest that you learn to use "Rupee" as the common currency before that because even with our Tamil, we are able to provide a better standard of living for our citizens than people from Bihar, UP etc...

If you are still unclear, then goto Pakistan and live there because you don't belong to our India.

Thanks.

Its not for you.Its for others to speak to you so they can learn from you .(if thats the way you want to look at it)
I am a pukka tamilian But having lived in hyderabad and Mumbai I know hindi very well. And Almost all my friends tell me it is so difficult to live in chennai....people refuse to speak anything but tamil.
And when people in Channai can speak ENGLISH ( a colonial reminder of people who ruled over us...what PRIDE is lost in speaking hindi)
Or I say drop Tamil...And start speaking english with an american accent as that is the most industrialized country in the world.
Language is for communication and people not knowing Hindi in Tamil nadu is as much as hindrance to the people of other states as it is to your own state.
Northern states might be not so rich and indutrialised as Tamil nadu but we have as much to learn from them specially when it comes to broadening our conservative way of thinking.....!

Students should be encouraged to learn other languages, schools should organise tours to different parts of India to make students learn more about cultures of those parts. Maybe we should organise Tamil/Telugu/Bangla/Naga etc sammelans in New Delhi and Hindi Sammelans in non-Hindi parts of the country.

But coming back to the topic, we should revert to two language policy (Hindi + Local) as far as official work is concerned. English (as a state language) was supposed to be a temporary arrangement. Now the time has come to get rid of this colonial baggage.

no way please no more languages. we had english, marathi/sanskrit and hindi which was more than enough. cant have more languages to boggle children 's mind when will they learn other languages? when will they learn other subjects with so many foreighns languages also required to be learnt now.
as it is in india dilect change after every few kilometers.
