Neetu Chandra misses being SRK's gal

Losing Out: Neetu Chandra

If all had gone well, Garam Masala actress Neetu Chandra would have starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Raj Films' upcoming venture, Chak De.

Neetu was the first choice for the role, but later Yash Raj Films and director Shimit Amin decided to cast Vidya Malavade.

Plot lost

The film sees Shah Rukh playing an ageing hockey coach who takes a motley group of girls to the pinnacle of world hockey.

Neetu was supposed to essay the role of a Sikh girl who is keen to join the hockey team but does not get the approval of her parents.

Says a source from Yash Raj, "Neetu met Shimit a couple of times and everything seemed to be going well. Suddenly, one day she was told that she was being replaced by Vidya."

When contacted, Neetu admits that she had auditioned for Chak De and Shimit was considering her for the role. "But after the release of Traffic Signal, the makers felt that I deserved a bigger role. There are eleven girls in the film and every girl has almost an equal role," she says.

Bright gal

Neetu says she understands Shimit's need for a fresh face. "Shimit is a great guy. He is decent and very professional. I understand his perspective and subsequent change of mind. He said he would like to work with me in the future. I look forward to it," she says.

Asked if she regrets missing the opportunity to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan, Neetu says, "I'm not feeling bad. I am optimistic. I've worked very hard and I'm sure there'll be a next time."

Meanwhile, Neetu has signed a three-film contract with Ashtavinayak Films. "Also, I am doing a film to be produced by Anupam Kher," she signs off.

London calling

Part-Time Mumbaikar: Karan Johar

Seems like London is the destination of choice for B-Towners to escape the not-so-magical Mumbai monsoon.

For soon after the IIFA awards in Yorkshire were over, Rakesh Roshan and his family flew to the chic city for a short break. As did Karan Johar.

We think he should just buy a second home there. Considering the number of times he flies in and out of London, he's soon going to become an NRI!

Good friend Shah Rukh Khan too is giving him company there, though he didn't attend the awards function. We wonder why (wink, wink).

Amitabh and Salman's cold war!

19 Jun, 2007 07:51 pm IST

After Amitabh and Shah Rukh Khan's cold war, it's the turn of Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan's apparent war to come out in the open. A source from Yorkshire, where this year's IIFA awards were held, said that the so called cold war between the Bachchans and Salman was evident throughout the event. "Both the Bachchans and Salman Khan and his friends were trying to steal the show, and as a result two different camps were formed," says a filmmaker on condition of anonymity. The Bachchan and Salman cold war became public, when Amitabh didn't turn up till the last minute for the premiere of Emraan Hashmi's Train, because Salman was present at the venue. "Throughout the event their itinerary was made in such a way that Salman and the Bachchans, including the newly married couple Abhi- Ash didn't bump into each other. The organizers had a tough time managing the Bachchan and Khan camps," says our source. And now the buzz is that due to the growing animosity towards the Bachchans, Amitabh will no longer don the role of IIFA's brand ambassador. And guess who is in the rat race? Shah Rukh Khan... the Bachchan and Khan rivalry seems to be heating up!

Pepsi revs up sales pitch for World Cup

Blog this story

New Delhi: In the run-up to the ICC World Cup to be held in West Indies this March. PepsiCo India is entering into cross-promotional alliances with other brands.

The marketing pitch revolves around its Blue Billion theme to support the Indian cricket team.

Vipul Prakash, vice-president-marketing, said the company was looking at a massive effort to reach consumers through different channels with like-minded brands.

"We have also tied up with Adidas, which is retailing Men-in-Blue cricket accessories such as T-shirts, wrist bands and we would be co-promoting it through a mutual deal wherein Pepsi consumers will get some offers. Similarly, we have tied up with Microsoft on its new game on the X-Box 360," he said.

The company has also tied up with media partners such as Aaj Tak, SET Max, MTV and Radio Mirchi that will co-promote its 'Cheer-A-Thon' viral campaign and has Yahoo on board to help it maintain the site www.bluebillion.co.in.

Microsoft has already announced its plans to launch an exclusive game, Yuvraj Singh International Cricket 2007, for Indian consumers on its X-Box 360 platform as the event draws closer.

"We have tied up with Pepsi as it allows us reach into the key youth segment, wherein our console and game will be given out as an initial co-promotion deal," said Mohit Anand, country manager (entertainment and devices division), Microsoft Corporation India.

The marketing logic is fairly clear. According to Rima Gupta, country head, Henley Centre, "The thinking among brands has progressed. Earlier, we found one brand piggy-backing the stronger brand for its distribution strength and presence to pave way for itself.

"Today, the relationship is more among equals. Brands realise that consumers flirt between different brands and categories and the big thinking on cross promotional deals is to catch them through different means in a win-win situation," she said.

And this is working. To begin with, PepsiCo India claims that it has already got 7.5 lakh hits from cricket-crazy fans, who have signed on to wish the team luck.

To cap it all, the messages would be handed over personally to Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid by Shah Rukh Khan at a send-off event planned later this month.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan not only rules Bollywood but also the advertising world.

According to the recent service tax collections SRK is the most popular salesman of brands.

Excise officials say that SRK alone paid Rs 4.8 crore as service tax last year, which is nearly 10 per cent of his annual Rs 50 crore income from advertisements.

Next in line is Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan who is second highest contributor to service tax in the film industry followed by son Abhishek Bachchan .

The Big B paid Rs 1.50 crore while Abhishek paid Rs 1 crore the same as Rani Mukherjee who tops among actresses.

Among other actors John Abraham paid Rs 79 lakh as service tax, Sushmita Sen 37.50 lakh, Preity Zinta paid 27.43 lakh, Salman Khan 13.50 lakh, Malaika Arora 3 lakh and Lara Dutta paid 2.93 lakh.

Service tax paid by Bollywood actors comes under the brand ambassador's sector, which is one of 104 sectors that the Central Excise collects tax from in Mumbai.

Last year, the Central Excise department had collected nearly Rs 12,000 crore in the form of service tax from various sectors like Insurance companies, Banking and Finance and Phone services.

The officials say that with the increasing involvement of film stars in promoting new brands, Bollywood is increasingly becoming one of the major sectors of tax collection.
