I have a totally different take on this. I differentiate between good actors and star power. Deepika's star power and star aura is different..that is where her strength lies. I actually dont want to see DP in Chhappaak or Gehraiyaan for eg...I felt like she wanted validation for her acting skills ..and she was slowly going into that phase..even though she already got it with Cocktail/ Piku and I personally lovedd her in Chennai Express... I am very happy watching her headline larger than life roles....and she absolutely nails it with her presence..like you said..Aloo cant pull off this kind of stuff with her short height and she is no diva. Neither DP needs to do what Alia is doing..nor Alia needs to do what DP does. Like Alia with her tiny frame..looks funny as someone headlining a cop movie..but I am looking forward to her Jigra..DP would make a fabulous female cop..because of her persona..thats what I mean. I also dont think Alia fits in well in an SLB world as a DP/ Aish do. DP-Aish IMO..are the screen goddesses..and Rani-Alia are actresses. I dont like it when folks look down on an actress for selecting glamorous roles (like this dumb Jahnvi boasting about not choosing an easier path..Jahnvi's useless fandom thinks they can take a dig at DP..the audacity LOL) or larger than life roles..for me personally escapist cinema >>>> realistic cinema.
Deepika has enough acting skills to be a bwood commercial movie heroine. She ain't no Priyanka but she is miles ahead of all the new lots. She also has immense screen presence and is extremely beautiful and has that larger than life aura to her. It's not her fault if movies like piku and chapak and cocktail come once in a while. Kjo is gatekeeping almost all female oriented movies for his nepo babies. Jhanvi don't have a single hit and she still gets female oriented author backed roles
Also there is a huge difference in box office collection pre and post COVID. Most audiences don't waste their money for female oriented or down to earth type of movies. They want theatre experiences and movies that mostly give them the adrenal rush. That's why all those 300+, 400+ movies are high octane action movies. Other low budget movies mostly have an ott release now.
Also if not Deepika who else are good enough to be in high budget larger than life movies like jawaan and pathaan opposite srk? Pretty sure nobody wants to see kriti or Kiara or alia opposite srk.

She definitely is a star but does have decent acting skills. She isn't like katrina who is a bad actor all together and survives solely based on looks and screen presence.
Deepika and Aishwarya are almost the same level. Neither of them are amazing actresses but not bad either. Both are extremely beautiful. If the character is well written and has a good director they both do really well and both have expressive eyes. But if it's a full commerical movie which only requires them to look pretty then they only do only that much. Both have immense screen presence and a larger than life aura. So they don't really have to act in those high budget dramas. Their looks and aura will do the job along with looking good with the hero and they both look good with almost everyone.
DP can pull off a dear zindagi or 2 states or a rocky Rani but alia definitely cannot pull off a besharam rang. Hook up was so uncomfortable to watch.
Rani also had more of that bwood heroine aura than alia. She is a really good dancer and has more sex appeal that alia. She in aaga bhai song from aaiyya was amazing.
Only Priyanka had really good acting skills to lead a non commercial female oriented movie as well as the screen presence and aura to be the quintessential flowerpot in big budget bwood masala movie.
