Two of IPL’s most successful teams with five titles each, both sides are witnessing a tectonic shift of leadership change with Hardik Pandya taking over the mantle from Rohit Sharma at MI and Ruturaj Gaikwad succeeding Dhoni at CSK, but there is nothing that suggests their intense rivalry would expect any such shift.

CSK would also hope their recent record against MI — four wins in last five matches including their seven-wicket win here last season — holds them in good stead.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has revealed how he was shadow captaining Chennai Super Kings (CSK) right through the title winning campaign in 2023, a year after MS Dhoni told him to be ready for the role. And having taken the hot seat, Gaikwad said he wants “keep the CSK culture intact” as it has given them five titles, including three in the last six years.

Speaking to the media for the first time since taking over as captain after CSK’s seven-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders, Gaikwad said he wants to be himself in the role and not try to fill in the giant shoes of Dhoni.

“I remember in 2022 was when he told me that, ‘you know, probably not next year but after that you might get a chance to lead, so be ready for it’. So obviously after that, I was always preparing for it. It (the captaincy) didn’t come as news to me or was I bit surprised or shocked,” Gaikwad who scored an unbeaten 67 in CSK’s win on Monday said.

Chennai's brilliance at death

In the death overs (17-20), Kolkata scored 28 runs for the loss of four wickets. Complimenting Jadeja in the attack were Mustafizur (4-0-22-2) and Tushar Deshpande (4-0-33-3).

The atmosphere at the Wankhede on Sunday night remains shrouded in expectancy: will it be a sea of blue or a flood of yellow? The possibility of Mumbai Indian fans being outnumbered at their home ground is not ruled out. While a packed stadium is a given, the energy from the stands is expected to be particularly electrifying.
