Varun was arrogant about his track record even his fans on this forum used to conveniently say he has “all successes”…. Out of his 15 films only 5 are actual proper “clean hits”
The rest are all inflated average, semi-hit consolation prizes
Varun and his team developed this method very early on where as long as a movie wasn’t an outright flop they’d call it a success. At one point he was being compared to Rajesh Khanna for having multiple “success” back to back. And he’s still trying these tricks. During JJJ promotions I think it was Anupama who brought up some of his movies not doing well and mentioned Street Dancer3. Varun's immediate response was to say the producers of SD3 made money. What kind of an argument is that? Almost all producers make money. That has nothing to do with whether a movie is a success or not, not in Bollywood anyway.
Varun is another one whose success was as much PR as it was box office numbers. Unfortunately his PR didn’t know how to react after Kalank and SD3 and he lost the plot. They should have released articles talking about Badlapur and how he’s the greatest actor of his generation and titled him the prince of Bollywood or something. Once you create an illusion of being talented it’s really hard to break it in Bollywood, specially for a nepo kid because media and analysts will back up that illusion out of respect for the family.
It looks more like an attempt to dodge the question than anything else, because the question itself is weird and wrong.
That’s Karan Johar though, always full of wrong and weird questions. Varun should be able to not fall into the trap every time, like this year when he said he looks younger than Deepika and Katrina. I think Varun gives these problematic answers because he probably believes it and wants to reiterate it for the public.
Varun has had a pretty good run without directors, actresses or budgets as big as those Ranbir/Ranveer have. He picked a side lane budget/plot wise, built a small but loyal base and gets consistent openings/lifetimes. Much better than the likes of Siddharth, Vicky etc. floating on the back of one or two films.

What are those ‘series’ of hits before 2013 and the other big budget series post 2013?
There is not a single genuine star from the current BW lot who doesn’t have to depend on creating fake perceptions by 2 rupees websites and media.
Ranbir leads from the front the brigade of fake stars.
