3. Chandraghanta
Chandraghanta, also known as Chandika or Rannchandi is worshiped on the third day of Navratri. Her name means, "one who has a half-moon shaped like bell, the one with the third eye open, and always ready to fight with demons". She symbolizes fearlessness and courage. Chandraghanta is also known to govern the planet Shukra and helps maintain harmony in everyone's life.
Some of the details of her avatar are ten hands, she rides a tiger (represents bravery), wears a semi-circular moon on her forehead and some of her weapons are Trishul, Lotus, Gada, Kamandal, Sword, Bow, and Arrow. Even though the destroyer of demons is believed to be ruthless in nature towards demons, she also has a very compassionate side. Her grace is needed to eradicate sins, distress, and physical suffering.
Chandraghanta is the 'married form' of Goddess Parvati. Mythology says Lord Shiva reached the palace of King Himavan in order to marry Goddess Parvati. Maina Devi, Goddess Parvati's mother fainted looking at Lord Shiva's avatar. His looks included a snake around his neck, and unkempt hair, and he brought ghosts and ghouls into the marriage procession. Goddess Parvati took the form of Chandraghanta and prayed to Lord Shiva. Later Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a prince to marry Goddess Parvati.
