3. Chandraghanta

Chandraghanta, also known as Chandika or Rannchandi is worshiped on the third day of Navratri. Her name means, "one who has a half-moon shaped like bell, the one with the third eye open, and always ready to fight with demons". She symbolizes fearlessness and courage. Chandraghanta is also known to govern the planet Shukra and helps maintain harmony in everyone's life.

Some of the details of her avatar are ten hands, she rides a tiger (represents bravery), wears a semi-circular moon on her forehead and some of her weapons are Trishul, Lotus, Gada, Kamandal, Sword, Bow, and Arrow. Even though the destroyer of demons is believed to be ruthless in nature towards demons, she also has a very compassionate side. Her grace is needed to eradicate sins, distress, and physical suffering.

Chandraghanta is the 'married form' of Goddess Parvati. Mythology says Lord Shiva reached the palace of King Himavan in order to marry Goddess Parvati. Maina Devi, Goddess Parvati's mother fainted looking at Lord Shiva's avatar. His looks included a snake around his neck, and unkempt hair, and he brought ghosts and ghouls into the marriage procession. Goddess Parvati took the form of Chandraghanta and prayed to Lord Shiva. Later Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a prince to marry Goddess Parvati.

Kindly correct "Maina" in your write-up to Mena.

As Kālidāsa wrote in Kumārasaṃbhava, मेनां मुनीनामपि माननीयाम्, Menāṃ munīnām api mānanīyām - Menā who is to be honoured even by the sages.

Hi BrhannadaArmour,

It's great that you know so much about Navratri, but instead of continuously telling us, CCs, what you know, let's make this a great thread about celebrating Navratri and learning new facts.

Additionally, what you're pointing out is not a mistake. Various sites refer to different spellings than what you may be aware of. For example, here you will see the spelling is "Maina Devi". Just because you know of one spelling, it doesn't mean that it is the only spelling.

Websites misspell names all the time, and accountability is hard to find on the internet, so please don't insist that "Maina" isn't a mistake because you copied it from a website.

In the Saṃskṛta texts that preserved these myths for centuries, the name of Himavat's wife is only Menā, never Mainā. The name of Pārvatī's brother is Maināka, and if someone spelled it as Menāka, I would call that a mistake too.

I am offering corrections in the same spirit that you solicited new facts - a desire to learn more and share our knowledge. Ultimately, it's your mythology as much as mine, and you can rename any character as you see fit.

It's not a misspelling, it's translations. The same word can be translated 2 ways by 2 different people. That doesn't mean either person is wrong. It's their own thinking.

Yes Samskrta texts have it spelled one way, but the translation of Mena was also done by someone into English. It's not how it came spelled originally.

There is a very big difference in what we are doing and what you are doing. We are engaging members in an attempt to bridge gaps and distances. Our members are all over the world and in these small games and fun, we attempt to bring them together to enjoy and spread their knowledge amongst others. What you're doing is nitpicking.

It's not my mythology or your mythology at that point. And it is not sharing facts when you tell us to correct our spellings or change how we're writing something. It is sharing facts when you state "Durga devi has 9 avatars". Now if you go to that and point out that "devi" should be spelled with a capital D, then it is not sharing facts. It is nitpicking.

On Day 4 or Chaturthi Tithi of the Navratri, Mata Kushmanda is worshipped.

When Goddess Parvati started living inside the Center of the Sun so that she could liberate energy to the universe, she was named as Kushmanda. The radiance of her body is as refulgent as that of the Sun. Hence God Sun is governed by the Goddess.

She mounts a lioness and has eight arms, thus called as Ashtabhuja. In her right hands she carries a kamandalu, a bow (Dhanush) , arrow (baand) and a white lotus (Kamal) while her left hands hold the pot of nectar (Amrit Kalash), rudraksh , a mace (Gada) and Chakra

It is believed that it is this form of Durga which eliminated darkness from the world and created the Brahmanda by just a smile. And therefore, every idol of the goddess in this form has a humane smile on her face.

Her name symbolises her role - Ku means "little", Ushma means "warmth" or "energy" and Anda means "cosmic egg". Thus, Maa Kushmanda signifies a little warmth and energy and also known as the Goddess of Cosmic Egg.

She is worshipped with red coloured flowers. She is also fond of Bali, a white pumpkin, which is known as Kushmand. Because she created the universe (Brahmanda) and she likes Kushmand, the goddess is named Kushmanda.
