Boney Kapoor was majorly obsessed with Sridevi. He got his brother Anil Kapoor to continually sign films with her from the 80s until she retired in 1997 with Judaai (co-starring Anil and produced by Boney)... - so he would have an excuse to land up on their sets and get to know her better. In fact "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" produced by Boney and starring Anil + Sri was launched in 1987, shooting continued on-and-off until it's 1993 release.
Boney would have done whatever it takes to get closer to Sridevi. Even if that means inviting her into his home as a rakhi sister to live with his wife and kids. This is the definition of a creep.
Not to put it all entirely on him, but Sri came from a super odd and isolated social setup, she had been acting since the age of 4 and wasn't brought up in the real world, she grew up on film sets and living as different characters non-stop... that takes a huge toll on you... I think she was vulnerable in some ways, but also perhaps manipulative in others. Her insecurity and vulnerability (after her parents' death) drew her to being receptive of rich married men's charms.
I'm not sure in fact if she ever knew her situation was as creepy as it was.
See, I'm a huge fan of her movies. So was my mom. She would also say pretty much what you did. That Sridevi was brought up in a weird setup where she didn't really have the capability to think for herself.
My rebuttal was usually this. She had enough sense to know Boney was Mona's husband. She had enough sense to pretend sisterly affection because she knew a romantic interest was wrong. She knew the man had 2 young children.
She went ahead and had the affair anyway.
When she became pregnant, she had the awareness to demand Boney divorce his wife and marry her instead of pulling a Dharam and adopting his own kids.
Sridevi had enough awareness of the world to have done all this. So she certainly had the awareness not to have done it. What she didn't have was a moral compass.
Boney is a loathsome insect, but it doesn't excuse Sridevi.
