Pride Month: 5 films that dive into LGBTQ lives
Adding to my never-ending list 😆
Call me by your name is a cinematic masterpiece and such heartwrenching storytelling ❤️
The songs by Sufjan Stevens adds to the experience❤️
Here's my favourite songs:
Mystery of Love -
Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love
Visions of Gideon
Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino told Pitchfork:
In the script, you have a line at the end saying, “Elio stares at the fire and thinks of his life.” It was always in my mind that he tended to be with one shot. I also thought about putting different kinds of songs in that moment. This was before I got the music from Sufjan. Then Sufjan showed me these songs. I was one week into shooting and I listen to the songs. I was with my editor and with Armie and Timothée, and we were shocked by the beauty, commitment, and attitude in these songs. So we immediately felt that “Visions of Gideon” was the perfect song for this moment in which Elio thinks of his life. When we shot the scene, I put the earbud in Timothée’s ear and played the song for him.
Result kab hai 🤣🤣

Interesting question!❤️
The reason lies in the history of the term "Homosexual". Since the middle ages, this term has been used to identify a "disorder" or a "disease", something that can be "cured". This idea/view is problematic since being "gay/homosexual" is not a disease, it is something we're born as. In fact, American Psychology Association's DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) classified "homosexuality" as a "mental disorder" called "ego-dystonic homosexuality" in 1952.
Due to the gay activism of 1960s that challenged the legitimacy of psychiatric diagnosis, APA changed the title.
In 1971, gay rights activist Frank Kameny worked with the Gay Liberation Front collective to demonstrate at the APA's convention. At the 1971 conference, Kameny grabbed the microphone and yelled: "Psychiatry is the enemy incarnate. Psychiatry has waged a relentless war of extermination against us. You may take this as a declaration of war against you."
In 1973, "ego-dystonic homosexuality" was changed to "sexual orientation disturbance" owing to the. However, it was not until 1987 in DSM-III-R that it was entirely dropped as a mental disorder.
The Board of Directors for the American Psychiatric Association voted to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder from the DSM-II in 1973, but the DSM retained a diagnosis that could be used for distress due to one's sexual orientation until the DSM-5 (2013).
Some history:
By the end of the 12th century, hostility towards homosexuality began to emerge and spread through Europe's secular and religious institutions. There were official expressions condemning the "unnatural" nature of homosexual behavior in the works of Thomas Aquinas and others. Until the 19th century, homosexual activity was referred to as "unnatural, crimes against nature", sodomy or buggery and was punishable by law, sometimes by death.
In the beginning of the 19th century, people began studying homosexuality scientifically. At this time, most theories regarded homosexuality as a disease, which had a great influence on how it was viewed culturally. There was a paradigm shift in the mid 20th century in psychiatric science in regards to theories of homosexuality. Psychiatrists began to believe homosexuality could be cured through therapy and freedom of self, and other theories about the genetic and hormonal origin of homosexuality were becoming accepted. There were variations of how homosexuality was viewed as pathological.

This is why the term "homosexual/homosexuality" should not be used to refer the LGBTQIA+ community.

So glad I hopped on here. Happy Pride Month everyone 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
While it hurts to think that this is still something that needs to be fought for, something as simple as accepting people for who they are, I'm so glad how more and more people are becoming more aware now. Our world is diverse and colourful, and it's what makes us all the more special 🧡💛💚💙💜❤️
Let's spread the love!!!
