Cricket is a most precarious sport; it is called a team game but, in fact, no one is so lonely as a batsman facing a bowler supported by ten fieldsmen and observed by two umpires to ensure that his error does not go unpunished. -- John Arlott

The 64th match of the Indian Premier League 2022 will be played between Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings and Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai today.

Notably, both PBKS and DC have won 6 games each in the Indian Premier League 2022 and they need to win the remaining games to make it to the playoffs.

Delhi Capitals are in a do-or-die situation because if they lose a match their fortunes will no longer remain in their hands.

“This is a do-or-die situation for us. We have performed well in the tournament, but we have lost some close games. We have to make sure that we don’t repeat the mistakes we have committed in the competition so far,” said Kuldeep.

Kuldeep Yadav added that they have prepared very well for the match and it will just be all about getting off to a good start.

Punjab Kings is currently placed seventh on the points table, while Delhi Capitals is placed fifth on the table.

Both the teams have played 12 matches and won 6 games each so far. They will play against each other for the second time in this season of the Tata IPL.

The last time they played against each other this season, Delhi Capitals won the game by 9 wickets.

The similarities between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals stretch beyond an identical 12 points in as many games.

Neither of them have won two games on the bounce in IPL 2022 pointing to familiar inconsistency.

Both Punjab and Delhi are coming into the contest on the back of resounding wins - PBKS dented Bangalore and their playoffs hopes, while Delhi stalled Rajasthan Royals march into top-two with an eight-wicket statement win.

What Punjab's big win over RCB did though was not only boost their NRR, but also offer Delhi a new lease of life by giving them back the control of their fate in the competition.

With 1005 runs in 22 innings - 12 of which were half-century knocks - Warner is the leading run-scorer against Punjab in the IPL.

To curb any chances of early fireworks from his bat, Punjab will undoubtedly let Rabada have a go at him, having already dismissed the Australian five times in T20 cricket.

Delhi's last five opening partnerships anyway read: 0, 5, 0, 16 and 0 with the team struggling to find an able replacement for typhoid-struck Prithvi Shaw.

Delhi would also want to see the back of Punjab's top-scorer this season, Dhawan, early.

To that effect, they might hand an over or two with the new ball to Kuldeep, who has dismissed the southpaw twice.

Dhawan averages only 17 against the left-arm spinner, who is currently Delhi's top wicket-taker this season

Did you know?

- PBKS have five 60+ Powerplay totals while DC has three such totals in IPL 2022

- With 1133 runs in 29 innings at an average of 47.2, Mitch Marsh is the top run-getter at one-drop position in T20 cricket since 2021.

- Rabada is currently on 97 wickets from just 61 IPL games, and could potentially overtake Lasith Malinga as the fastest to 100 tournament wickets (70 matches).

The weather's clear for the game day. Chasing has been a preferred trend at the venue with the toss-winning captain opting to bat first just twice so far this IPL.

10 out of 18 games have been won by chasing sides.

Both Delhi and Punjab are tied at 12 points. With Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) very much certain to take the second or third spot and join Gujarat Titans (GT) in the playoffs, the fourth spot remains wide open.

While Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have 14 points and are also close to confirming a berth, DC and PBKS are far from being out of the race.

If the winner of Delhi-Punjab goes on to win their remaining game as well, they can move past RCB to take the fourth spot.
