I also tend to think that people/families fit into a wide range of spectrum, hence we will find an example for every possible case.
India is a highly populous country and TV/visual media has a larger reach and impact on families across strata. So, I tend to believe that a lot of lavishness that is displayed on this media percolates into the society, slowly but surely.
That leads to peer pressure, unnecessary spending, stretching beyond one’s capabilities. Which in turn leads to daughters being considered a burden and other social evils (which I do not want to mention and hijack the discussion, but you get the drift). It is a vicious cycle.
Like you mentioned, shows like Anupama could bring about the necessary change in the society in this perspective. That they failed to do it is a different topic altogether!
Couldn’t agree more on leading by example. We are a result of the environment we are in.
