And further embarrassing is they being state Govt, have no control on import duties. Even Musk would be laughing at their tomfoolery.

On the sidenote, India is ready for electric cars and Tesla cars will be a hit here.

But totally support the assembly in India demand, specially when Tesla is already doing that in China.

@blue: These guys are offering something which isn't even on the table ๐Ÿ˜†.

@bold: yup, totally on board for this demand. It will give enormous boost to the industrial sector and obviously will lead to employment (especially for engineers from core branch).

Musk though has a very rabid following and an even better PR machinery. GoI tbh isn't capable of handling all the games he plays on its own unlike China. Let's see.

PS - I find him a genius and extraordinary too. So not a hater but just familiar with the tricks he pulls.

These are brainless tests who donโ€™t even understand the challenges of doing business.

Elon Musk asks Indian Govt to ease import taxes for his cars.

Govt asks Elon to do Make in India cars, to avoid import taxes and get local assembly in India. Win win for both. They do the same in China.

Elon refuses.

Govt wonโ€™t tweak taxes for Elon.

Elon cries on Twitter.

Brainless state govts are inviting Elon, pata nahi for what. Lol.

Wow that's why India's  economy is in this state. First read the news properly before blurring out your fancy theory. For any Foreign company to invest in any country they will always ask for TAX cut or other benefits.

No Big company will blindly enter any other country with their hard earned money. First they will need to do research and understand the market, country's policies.  The Fcking Modi's govt. is so corrupt that they hindered every possible way for Tesla to enter India. Fossil fuel car makers from India  don't want Telsa to grab market in India like it did in China.

Had Telsla entered in Indian market, it would have eaten Tata Nexon alive. That car looks like crap in comparison of even Tesla's first model S. At the end of day its India's loss. Hindering the latest technological advancements to enter the country  in the name of saving existing companies.

@ sharmajikaladka

For any Foreign company to invest in any country they will always ask for TAX cut or other benefits.

Think before you write.

If musk will not invest in India why the hell should government give him any tax cut or benefits.

And not just India every country in the world has the same rule for every multinational company, be it US or China or South Africa

Make or assemble locally if you want tax cuts and benefits.

Unilever

Proctor and Gamble

Nissan

Suzuki

Honda

Foxconn/Apple

Are these companies run by idiots to invest in assembly in India and only then get tax cuts as a result.

Hell Benz invested in India with a JV Bharat Benz

What has quality of TatA EV got to do with Tesla investment in India.

Even if Tata or any other Indian brand's EV is superior to Tesla,  the trade policy of investment for avoidance of import duties cannot change.

Nobody gets a free pass  whether it is a local brand or a foreign brand.

A local brand pays money as salaries to the local population

A foreign brand pays money import taxes

A foreign company does not want to pay import taxes then it will have to pay money as salaries to local population by setting up either a manufacturing or assembly line

No investment no tax cuts and no benefits.

This is the policy not just for India but for every major country in the world be it US or China or other signatories of WTO. If Suzuki wants to sell in US with no import taxes,  it has to invest in local assembly in US

If you don't understand how foreign trade works,  study that before posting nonsense

@chiillii : I didn't want to get into all the details coz we know what happens in such posts in BWF after a while but you have summed up everything brilliantly.

For the rest (my two bits on the issue as per my understanding) :

Tesla wants GoI to reduce import duty on its cars. Who's gonna benefit from that?  Tesla and a handful of Indians (let's be honest, no one from the middle class/lower middle class is going to go for Tesla in India).

If the govt doesn't agree, who's loss is it? Again Tesla(not much but still it loses a market) and a handful of Indians (they can always go for other options)

If Tesla agrees, then it's a win for the Indian economy and the unemployed mass (esp those in automobile, mech, electrical sector). Obviously, its tricky for Tesla to invest without being sure how much units it will actually be able to sell. So it is a gamble for Tesla and thus their concern is totally valid. But then this whining on twitter shouldn't be done. Nahi karna hai invest, mat karo. But don't whine ffs.

(China has a very strong middle class which can afford Tesla, the number of just Teslas sold in China every year is on par with the number of luxury cars of all brands sold in India combined. So India is obviously not a very reliable market for it. Probably Tesla will prefer Japan or Korean markets. Still won't be a big loss to India.)

Dude why are you comparing import duties to corporate tax?

Read well, comprehend better.

I am a absolute fan of his niche for innovation, love for technology and risk taking appetite. The man is unstoppable in his vision for future.

Finger crossed for SpaceX and those satellite Internet work.
