Pukar was a serious and slow film with older looking leads inching past their prime.

So it flopped despite good performances and good music.

Nayak was probably ahead of its time and also Anil had slowly begun to be overtaken by newer actors by then or perhaps he looked too old opposite Rani in songs and promos which is why film flopped.

But Pukar won him National award which is big. And Nayak is a cult classic now.

So despite flops, these films did serve him well. Can't be called underrated if they got appreciation later or critically.

For an actor the most important part is the box office. Awards especially considering its Indian awards which are easily bought don't matter much. So yeah Pukar and Nayak flopping makes them underrated overall and didn't serve him well, while medicore movies like hum aapke dil mein rehte hain somehow did

Mr India was Sridevi and Amrish's film. They scored over Anil in it.

Jackie stole the show in Parinda.

I agree Anil outshines in Ram Lakhan because he is besr suited to playful manchild roles anyway and that film was designed to prop up Lakhan whose character has a graph unlike Ram who is same old adarshwaadi elder brother.

I think Anil was great in Mr. india, Amrish shines more but Sridevi wasn't really superior to him unlike Madhuri in Beta.

Haven't watched Parinda in a very long time, don't remember much there but like you said he was the best part of Ram Lakhan.   It's all about writing, you can't blame Anil for not shining much in movies like Beta where its obvious that the director put the real focus on Madhuri (he still did a good job with what we had)

National awards are not easily 'bought'. It is not Filmfare.

Though yes it requires political connections which is why Anil being close to BJP helped him win in 1999, Raveena also won NA during BJP rule and Saif won NA thanks to his mom who was CBFC chair in UPA govt. Today Kangana gets all Padmas and National awards thanks to sarkari chaaplusi.

Not for Anil.

Subtract Madhuri from that film and see how many still watch it.

Tezaab was an out an out Anil's film 1 song doesn't change that fact and which is why he won the best actor award for it. also it was madhuri's first hit movie and anil was already successful with his previous movie was a rising star.

Parinda is out and out a Jackie and Nana show.

Sridevi did outshine Anil in Mr India. It is her Hawa Hawai and I Love  you songs which became wildly popular and her character Seema was so popular that she was made ambassador of a electronics brand named Cema which rhymed with her character name in the film. Her Charlie Chaplin act also became famous and she became known as a complete actress with this film as she did comedy and romantic scenes all in one film.

Mr India is watched today and remembered purely for Sridevi and Amrish Puri. Not Anil, who was mostly invisible or same old innocent common man, childlike in Mr India as well as Arun Kumar.

In comedy shows till date also people recreate Hawa Hawai and Mohambo. Not Anil's character.

ANil kapoor did well in Mr india but its true mr india became more iconic for sridevi and amrish puri. Beta was written for sridevi thats why madhuri shined more due to director who wrote sridevi in mind.

Beta was the only movie where Madhuri had the better performance orientated role in an anil kapoor movie but tezaab, Pukar, Ram Lakhan was anil kapoor all the way, madhuri had a chartbuster song thats about all, like katrina had chartbuster song song in dhoom 3 but we all know aamir khan was the best part pf the movie.

Same in Judaai where it wasn't anil's fault because Judaai was a female orientated movie so sridevi and urmila shined more because of the role they had, can't blame him for his weak characterisation which did not demand much, he did well with what he had to offer.

Anil himself admits he went to meet Filmfare staff and ensure best actor award went to him for Tezaab and Beta no matter what.

Anyway Tezaab is indeed Anil's film but popular and remembered only due to Madhuri's songs who became overnight craze after that film.

If people still remember or watch Tezaab it is due to Madhuri. Otherwise Tezaab is an ordinary 80s masala film with a weak villain.

I guess Anil was comfortable with a Kiran Kumar and not Amrish Puri, which allowed him to shine.

One song doesn't take away who dominated the movie, tezaab did well also as anil was rising star after delivering hit movies before tezaab, a song can help but not the overall collection of the movie as it all depended on story, acting and who stars was.

Anil Kapoor was consistent and dependable and delivered his best in every movie. Jackie Shroff and Sanjay Dutt were better actors. But they've acted in some very mediocre movies and have sleepwalked through some boring movies. But when they get a strong script and a great director they outshine Anil every time. The contrast could be seen in Parinda where Jackie played the strong silent character who explodes finally at the climax and Anil playing himself consistently throughout the film.
