1.) Sanjay Dutt
2.) Anil Kapoor
3.) Jackie Shroff
In my opinion.
Sanjay is brilliant in intense roles, had more charisma and better looks than other 2 and has good comic timing as well.
Jackie is also brilliant in intense roles and better than Anil on looks and intensity but he is not as versatile.
Anil looked most average compared to Sanjay and Jackie but he is more consistent and versatile if not as charismatic as them and he is a better dancer while other 2 cannot dance to save their lives. Anil is good at all genres but I do not think he can match intensity of Jackie and Sanjay in intense roles like Parinda, Kaash, Vaastav, Khalnayak.
Anil has managed his physique, career, life way better than other two though and had a better BO record as well in 80s.
Watch Nayak, Virasat, Tezaab and Lamhe to see Anil do subtle or intense roles equally well..his peak was in the time when BW did more of masala flicks so that shows in his filmography..not that he wasn't capable
I have seen all hia films. Anil is good in intense roles but not as good as Sanjay or Jackie. There is a reason why VVC chose him to play same old happy go lucky or innocent brother in Parinda but gave the more complex, intense role of criminal older brother to Jackie Shroff. Anil was favorite of Subhash Ghai but Ghai gave him same old happy go lucky roles but not intense roles like Khalnayak and Naam which he gave to Sanjay Dutt.
Anil is good in intense roles but not to level of Jackie and Sanjay Dutt. He would never be able to do as good as Sanjay Dutt in Naam, Vaastav, Khalnayak or like Jackie in Parinda.
Everyone can see how his attempts at intense roles such as Awaargi are rarely remembered now while Naam, Khalnayak, Parinda, Vaastav are modern day classics.

Really? Haven't ever heard them being referred to as classics..other movies r good but Khalnayak is strictly average
Khalnayak, Vaastav and Parinda are one of best performances by male actors in history of Indian cinema and also listed thus by Filmfare and Screen in several articles on iconic/best performances.
Sanjay and Jackie did a great job and better than always playing bhola natkhat younger brother.
Anyday they beat Anil in intensity and darker roles.
Directors also knew better which is why Ghai and Bhatt never gave those heavyweight roles to Anil who played it safe as bhola chhota bhai in Parinda as well.

Man You must be blind if you think anil kapoor can't do intense role, have you watched awaargi, mere jung, pukaar, nayak. All 3 are talented and brilliant.

I think Ram Lakhan is remembered more Anil Kapoor than for Jackie Shroff, as Anil got the meatier role but Jackie was brilliant towards the end of the movie when things became serious. Parinda agree was Jackie's movie.
Has no one seen Eeshwar or Meri Jung or Mashaal (confrontation of cynical DilipKumar with still hopeful AnilKapoor)
Sanjay dutt was a caricature in khalnayak. What intense bs. Naam was an intense role for him. Jackie can never do comedy. Munna bhai was hamfest compared to Mr.Bechara Deewana Mastana and No Entry and one of his early work Chameli Ki Shadi , where he holds his own against pankaj kapur
A good actor is one who can bring variations in the same role. Rebellious younger brother in both Janbaz and Ram Lakhan were so differently portrayed.
And his restrained angst in awargi or Tezaab or Meri Jung
Sanjay dutt's vastav is no match for Zindagi Ek Jua, both being similar stories of innocent man forced to join a life of crime
Edited by Chiillii - 2 years agoYes that is what I said. Anil is good for light hearted roles while Jackie and Sanjay are better for darker and more intense roles.
This is why Anil was happy go lucky brother in Parinda also and never managed to do what Jackie did in Parinda.
Ghai always cast Anil in happy go lucky roles like Karma and Ram Lakhan. For more intense role he chose Sanjay Dutt in Khalnayak. Not Anil.
