Part 1

Anupama waited outside the AK ventures office, eyes focused on the road. 

"Itni der kahan laga di? Thodi der pehle phone pe toh kaha tha ki.. "

The car approached right then, halting right in front of her. 

A sad half smile appeared on her face as she thought of the chivalrous man who had occupied permanent residence in her heart. 

"Kya hua mummy? Baithiye?" Samar asked, puzzled at his mother's smile. 

"Kya soch rahi ho aap?"

"Kuch nahi.." Anupama sighed as she sat next to him. 

"Sari aadatein kharab kar di aur phir.." 

She sighed audibly yet again. 

"Kya? Aadatein?"

"Kuch nahi! Radio chala ne! Saam ko is time pe mataji ki aarti ya Kanhaji k bhajan aa rahe honge woh.. Radio Gujju FM pe."

She sounded upset and Samar thought the bhajan would serve as a nice distraction. 

But Kanhaji clearly had other plans.

Garbey ghoomey bhooli bhaan/They forget about everything when they play garba

There! Two lines of the garba were enough to take her back to the night of Dussera. 

The lyrics added fuel to the fire.

Radha nu roop chhe/Radha is beautiful 

Kanuda ni preet chhe/Kanha is in love 

Aakhon maandi ne juve gaam/The entire village stares wide eyed at them

Jag ni reet nu shu kaam?/Who cares about wordly customs and rituals?

Anupama stopped the radio immediately. 

"Kya hua? Kanhaji ka garba hi toh chal raha tha"

"Pendrive me purane gane hai ne.. Woh sunte hain."

That did not help either.

Saawariyo re maro Saawariyo/My beloved 

Hoon toh khobo maangu ne/When I cup my hands asking for water

Dai de dariyo!/He brings me the entire sea!

"Ab toh garba sunna, purane geet sunna bhi bhari padh raha hai!", said Anupama while pausing the song.

Samar felt sorry for his mother who was struggling to keep her emotions in check. 

"Aap relax kariye mummy, please.."

"Ha beta. Kosis kar rahi hoon.."

"Aap theek hain? Main pani doon?"

She couldn't hear beyond the first question because it reminded her about Anuj, yet again. 

The concern in his voice whenever he asked "Sab theek hai?" And the stress on tum while asking "Tum theek ho?"

Ohh! That man was driving her insane by not being present yet being omnipresent! 

Samar couldn't help but ask "Agar aapko theek nahi lag raha hai toh hum academy ki location dekhne kal chalte hain?"

"Main theek hoon. Woh bas.. Anuj nahi hain ne toh.. Shtress jyada hai.. Jab tak woh Rajkot se wapis nahi aa jate tab tak.. aisa hi chalega."

"Finally!", thought Samar with a smile. 

"Aur woh.. kab tak wapis aayenge?"

"Pata nahi. Kuch bataya bhi toh nahi.. Bas itna pata chala GK kaka se ki unki.. woh textile wali company hai ne.. Us hi k kaam se gaye hain."

"Toh aap call karke pata kijiye na! Aisa bhi kaunsa jhagda.."

Here she interrupted him and reiterated what she had been saying to herself all along. 

"Jhagda nahi.. mat-bhed (difference of opinion) hai... bas!"

"Toh aisa bhi kaunsa mat-bhed jo call pe resolve na ho sake?"

She could not hide the hurt and pain as she said "Woh toh Anuj janey! Waise toh din me dus bar phone karte rehte hain. Mere daat ne par bhi bura nahi maante par.. Is bar toh.. dus din hone wale hain.. ek baar bhi.."

Samar placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. 

"Unhone aapko call bhale hi na kiya ho lekin.. mujhe kiya hai, har roz! Jabse rajkot gaye hain tab se.."

..............

Samar could not complete the sentence for he was rewarded with a slap on the shoulder.

"Paagal chhokro! Jara ae akkal nathi! Dekh raha hai ma paresaan hai phir bhi itne dino tak bataya nahi?!"

Samar parked the car while apologizing profusely. 

"I'm so sorry par main kya karta? Anuj ne promise liya tha.. ki main aapko na bataun toh.. bas isiliye.."

Anupama shook her head vigorously. 

"Dono ek se badhkar ek paagal hain! Aur mujhe bhi paagal bana denge apne jaise!"

Wiping her eyes with the corner of her pallu, she asked the question which was eating her up.

"Kuch bataya ki woh kaise hain? Amdavad kab aa rahe hain? Mere bare me kuch.. kaha?"

Samar smiled as he placed his phone on her palm. 

"Aap khud hi sun lijiye! Main unko call karta hoon par unhe yeh nahi bataunga ki.. aap yahaan hain aur aapko sab pata chal gaya hai."

Anupama could only nod in reply. 

Her heart started dancing wildly as he dialed the number. 

"Mute.." she whispered, not trusting herself to remain silent after hearing his voice. 

"Ha bol Samar. Sab theek hai? Anu.. theek hai?"

As she had expected, she teared up at the first word. 

His voice seemed like an oasis in the desert. 

And when she heard her name, she could not prevent the loud sob.

"Hello.. Samar?"

Samar knew it was futile to keep the call on mute or on hold so he cut it, much to her dismay. 

"Phone kyun.. kata Samar? Abhi abhi toh unhone bolna suru kiya tha.."

"Aap ko aise.. dekhkar mujhe laga.."

His phone screen flashed Anuj's name. 

"Ab phone utha. Mute pe rakh dena par kaatna mat.."

Samar melted at the desperation and gave her a quick hug before answering the call. 

"Ha Anuj.. Woh.. network issue tha, sorry!"

When she heard the soft hmm she knew he must have nodded while saying that. 

"Humlog theek hain,  mummy bhi. Aap kaise hain?"

"Main... busy rehta hoon is project me.. Zyada sochne ka mauka nahi milta.."

Anupama nudged him so he opened his mouth to vocalize her question when Anuj took her name again. 

"Anu.. bhi toh bahut busy hogi na? Main wahaan nahi hoon toh restaurant wala project use handle karna padh raha hai. Haa.. GK hain usk saath. Unse main project ki updates leta rehta hoon lekin.."

His voice trailed off. 

"Lekin aap nahi hain toh woh.."

Samar reframed the sentence when Anupama glared at him.

"Thodi stressed hain. Isiliye maine aur Nandu ne unhe academy aane se mana kiya hai. Taki woh sara time office ko de sake.."

"Ha, tune bataya tha par.. GK se baat hui, thodi der pehle. Pata chala ki Anupama ka concentration nahi tha shayad.. aaj ki meeting me koi goof up ho gaya usse. Woh usne handle kar liya."

Anupama was shocked beyond measure. 

Tapping at the mute button, she muttered more to herself than to him. 

"Itna sab kuch pata chala phir bhi phone nahi kiya mujhe? Kamaal hai!?"

Meanwhile Anuj continued.

"Isk peechhe koi aur wajah hai? Matlab tumhare ghar me.. koi issue hua hai is wajah se woh pareshan hai ya.. (pauses)main wahaan nahi hoon.. isiliye?"

"Toh unko yeh bhi pata hai! Phir bhi kuch nahi kar rahe hain! Samar jara poochh ne.."

"Anuj ghar pe toh aisa koi issue nahi hua hai. Toh I'm guessing ki woh.. doosri wajah hai. Aap.. wapis kab tak aayenge?"

Anupama had to physically prevent herself from heaving a sigh of relief when she heard "Teen-char din bad."

Samar smiled audibly. 

"Thats great! Waise aap Rajkot me hain hi toh.. Kya aap ek favour karenge?"

"Sure! Bol na.."

"Mera childhood friend Pinakin wahaan rehta hai. Woh mere liye kuch bhejna chahta hai toh.. Kya aap woh le aayenge?"

"For sure! Use mera number de aur hotel bata dena. Call kar k aayega toh better hoga."

"Cool! Woh kal hi aapko dekar jayega. Aap.. kitne baje free honge?"

"Waise toh 6 baje par lunch k bad main hotel me hi rehkar kaam karunga. So he can drop by in the afternoon if he wants to."

"Thank you so much! Main uska number message karta hoon aapko. Take care."

"You too kiddo. Sab ka.. (stresses)khaas kar Anu ka dhyan rakhna. Use.. akele mat rehne dena.. I mean.. she is disturbed. Tu usk saath jakar rahega toh.. she'll feel better."

"Sure! Bye."

............

The flood gates opened as the call ended. 

"Mummy bas.. Meri baat suniye.."

"Unki baat sun li, kaaphi hai!"

She banged her palm on her head. 

"Kya karu main inka? Ek taraph toh itni chinta ki tujhe roj phone kar k samachar lete rehte hain. Har teesre vakya (sentence) me mera naam lete hain. Aur dusri taraph itni narajgi ki.. Mujhe office ke email k alava koi phone koi message.. Kuch nahi bhejte!?"

The disbelief was evident in her voice. 

"Aap ka main kya karu mummy?! Gana sunti hain toh Anuj yaad aate hain, car me baithti hain toh Anuj yaad aate hain! Office me pure din pata nahi kitni bar unko yaad karti hongi aap! Par call toh aapne bhi nahi kiya na?"

"Main.. kaise.. call karoon?"

"Ha..  Aap call mat kariye, seedhe Rajkot jakar unse mil lijiye! Aur yeh jo aapka mat-bhed hai na, use face to face baithkar resolve kar lijiye!"

"Kai pan bole chhe? Matlab kuch bhi! Main kaise.. Rajkot ja sakti hoon? Bina kam k aise.. Ghar pe sabko kya bataungi? Wahaan pe woh alag kaam se gaye hain, mere poject ke kaam se nahi."

"Main aapko batata hoon ek foolproof bahana jise sablog believe bhi kar lenge aur aap ek din k liye rajkot bhi jakar aa payengi!"

Anu rejected the idea even though her heart told otherwise. 

"Rehne de ne Samar! Teen char din baad toh.. woh aa jayenge. Tab.. Baat kar lungi."

"Mummy aap ek bar sun toh lijiye! Phir aapko laga ki plan execute karne se char din tadapna better hai toh.. Aapki marzi! Main kuch nahi karunga!"

Anupama took a moment or two before nodding. 

"Bol, kya plan hai?"

"Surprise dena hai! Lekin sirf Anuj ko nahi, kisi aur ko bhi!"
