Patriotism still relevant??? - Page 2

Dear Friends!

Republic Day  of India  is approaching.Its on 26th Jan !!

Why do people(including me) become country conscious only before Aug 15 and Jan 26?😕

Is the concept of patriotism relevant even today?

Most of the people are of these type these days:

BORN in INDIA

Studied in UK

Working in USA

So they develop afffection to all these countries.Its a natural phenomenon.

So do you think Patriotism is still relevant???

According to me patriotism is a feeling towards once own land of birth.... It does not change with dates or countries....

The people who want to run to other countries because they like those countries more than India were never patriotic towards India even when they were in India....

While the people who go aborad with a vision to put brighter picture of India or help Indian progress even after staying out of India are always patriotic wherever they may and whatever date it may be😃

But yes as you said the first case of unpatriotic people is on a rise.... but picture will change soon and sooner if the politicians work for the country....

Patriotism is becoming a globalized term with WISE rise in immigration.
People described to me how hard it was to surrender Indian
passport and give up citizenship.  This is because the feelings do not
vanish with the passport.  I think that respecting my country of origin
 (janmabhoomi) is absolutely not hampered by my bond with the country
I am now a citizen of (Karmabhoomi).  
I remember and appreciate the sacrifices made by Hindavee freedom
 fighters as much you do.  I am bothered by the Noida killings as much
as you are.  It deeply concerns me that reservation issue is spreading like
 cancer, instead of beginning to narrow down after 50+ years of
 independence.

However, I genuinely question how many INDIANS, who have never
 stepped outside of India feel all the above!
Who do you call a patriotic then?

Yes my national anthem may be "the star sprangled banner" , but I will
 always stand up when "Jana gana mana" plays.  I will never forget a
 word of it. I will always feel the joy looking at Tiranga fluttering in
 breeze.

It is now that I love both my countries equally.
In fact, I love this earth  a whole lot, and am bothered by territorialism that
 is disrupting beauty and sanctity of Mother Nature in the name of
Pride of Nation -
(Israel -Pal issue, US-Iraq issue, Korea issue, Darfur issue, India-Pakistan
 border issue .. )

Patriotism could become a grave matter of difficulty only in case of my
 Karmabhoomi raging war against my Janmabhoomi.  God forbid, but I
 will decide it if and when!  I think I will choose my janmabhoomi at that
 point!

I'm patriotic! I support the Indian team in every match it plays.........Patriotism, to us, lies only in wearing pijama, kurtha,saris, salwars,  and cummerbunds, and screaming "India! India!" every time the cricket team takes the field. The Independence Struggle, the Revolt of 1857 (The Indian Sepoy Mutiny), the Quit India Movement, is "history" . We read about those to pass exams. Our palaces are tourist spots. When foreigners gawk at our land, call it "exotic", and speak of "the aura of mystery surrounding the Indian woman" and "the hospitality of the Indian people" and "the smell of spices mingled with the tar and dust of the gravel roads," we feel flattered. But about the people who settle in a foriegn country .Can't they be patriotic to the country they are living in.So many NRI's are contesting and winning the elections in that countries.Does it mean that they are patriotic to one country and serving for name sake for another country.

i think not ... we are more busy with our daily lives
and if it is an outcome of our international integration then so be it
i notice you ended with a jai hind and so would I but that in itself doesnt make me a patriot....a patriot is one who feels in his innards what it is like to be a proud national of his land ...and rises to occasion when and as called upon despite being away from his parent country..and I do it on daily basis and never allow others to mess with my country India..

Could'nt help in agreeing in your views on patriotism!!

As I said, patriotism is a feeling..... A feeling of belongingness, a feeling of love, a feeling of good willing.....

When you can have a feeling for more than one people then why not for more than one country, so if someone is patriotic towards one country where he is living, does nt necessarily mean he is not patriotic to his home land😃

Same reason you cut a cake and blow a candle, make a wish only on birthdays and not every day..😆

Actually I dont believe in division of any kind, countries/continents...etc so I am for one nationality... but if I have to I am really proud to be an Indian...though I feel I more at home with the american mind-set..😊

Studied in UK ---------- Like ugandans study in India.. do they become indian....

Working in USA ----------- yes everybody knows how racism hurts and although u can enjoy hamburgers and baseball.. americans care a damn about you - brown skin hatred.. so you can never get in the mainstream in any field...however hard you try... there will be grass-roots bias against indians, in every field..Indians are more like work horses ...😆 the big thing is they like true americans will never let you know.....and always come across as warm and friendliest people on earth...

So they develop afffection to all these countries.Its a natural phenomenon.Affection for what.? There is a sense of attachment out of time-based affection but that changes if you spend next 4 years in tahiti, honduras, brazil... or whereever....

So do you think Patriotism is still relevant??? - Not at all.. unless you go to indian grocery stores rather than american, watch hindi movies... and songs.. instead of american... in short if you dont do this you are like dhobi ka kutta na ghar ka na....
