Chapter 3 Tu Hai ke Nahi
Present Day
“Gautam!” Madhav kaka from the bank called out to Gaumbi from outside Pandya Niwas. There was chaos going on inside Pandya Niwas. The family was brainstorming how to get out of this mess. Rishita had offered to talk to her dad, a suggestion that Dev had shot down immediately. Dhara had suggested they sell Rishita’s and her jewelry. Rishita had promptly declined and said that if things went south with the family and business, she wanted to keep her jewelry to secure Dev’s and her future. Suman had suggested they mortgage the house and get a loan. Gautam explained to her that because they had this case ongoing, they were unlikely to get a loan from a bank. A moneylender would bleed them dry with sky high interest rates and they would end up losing both their home and store. That was too much of a risk.
Gaumbi, followed by Dev and Shiva, came out of the house to meet Madhav Kaka. “Jai Somnath,” they greeted each other. “Gautam, yaad hai maine tujhe Mumbai waali MNC ke baare mein bathaya tha? Arey wohi jo yahan mall banana chahthi hai?” He tried to jog Gautam’s memory about their conversation the previous day. “Arey haan, kya hua?” Gaumbi asked. “Suna hai uska jo Project Head hai, woh kal parson mein Somnath aa raha hai. Agar tum log uska mann badal sako, ki yeh project lekar woh kahin aur jaaye, tho ho saktha hai Bank tumhe aur time de de paise arrange karne ke liye? Ab agar woh MNC waale account ka paisa hi nahi aayega tho phir jaldi jaldi auction karne mein bank ka koi faayda nahi,” Madhav kaka explained.
“Baath tho aapki sahi hai. Agar hum uss project head ko kisi tarah se convince kar paayein tho hamari dukaan bach sakti hai,” Gaumbi smiled, feeling a faint ray of hope in the gloom surrounding him.
“Par unn logon ne kuch sochkar hi tho yahan mall banane ka socha hoga. Hume kya patha ki woh kya baath hai?” Shiva asked.
“Jo bhi ho, business decision hai na? Unn logon ko sirf profit aur loss ki basha samajh aati hai. Humme bas unhe convince karna hai ke unke mall ke liye Somnath ka market sahi nahi hai,” Dev replied, the gears turning in his head. “Main aisa presentation banaoonga ki unko apna decision badalna hi padega! Warna meri degree kis kaam ki?”
“Mujhe yeh sab samajh nahi aata. Main tho kehta hoon usko utha lete hain! Do chaar mukke padenge, thoda daraayenge dhamkayenge aur woh ulte paanv bhaag jaayega aur wapas Somnath aane ki sochega bhi nahi,” Shiva suggested.
“Haan aur woh seedha jaake tujhe police mein pakadvaayega. Pichle paanch saal se jo tu police station ke chakkar kaat raha hai, mann nahi bhara tera abhi tak?” Gaumbi asked angrily and Shiva went quiet.
“Madhav kaka, thank you so much for this information. Yeh ehsaan hum zindagi bhar nahi bhoolenge,” Gaumbi folded his hands in front of Kaka. “Please ek aur ehsaan kar dijiye? Kisi tarah hume uss Project Head se milne ka, apni baath rakhne ka mauka dila dijiye?” Madhav Kaka nodded his head, “main koshish karta hoon, beta,” he said before walking away.

Shiva had a weird sense of foreboding from the moment he woke up in the morning. Madhav kaka had arranged to have them meet with the Project Head in the afternoon. Dev, Rishita, Krish, Dhara and Gaumbi had worked really hard the past few days to present them with a perspective on why it was a bad idea to build a mall in Somnath. He had contributed in whatever little way he could but there was a restlessness that’d engulfed him that he couldn’t get rid of. Like something was going to go wrong. Horribly wrong. He pushed aside his anxiety and decided he would go to the temple before heading to the meeting. Surely Baba Somnath would feel some pity towards him? With that thought in mind, Shiva got on his bike and headed to the temple.

“Our project head is ready to meet with you,” the receptionist told Gautam, Dev and Shiva who’d been seated in the reception area for the past hour, waiting, while the Project Head was having lunch. Shiva was never a patient guy and he had half a mind to barge in and shove his fist into the guy’s face. But Gaumbi had told him this might be their only chance to save the store and he should not do anything to screw it up. So Shiva clamped down on his anger and sat tapping his foot restlessly.
“Shukar hai!” He muttered, standing up. “Please follow me,” the receptionist led them into a conference room where someone was seated at the head of a long table, their chair turned away so Shiva couldn't see his face. Was it colder in the room? Shiva wandered as he felt goosebumps wash over his skin. He looked over at Dev and Gaumbi but they both seemed fine. The receptionist indicated to them to take their seats and all three of them sat down.
“Sir, my name is Gautam Pandya. And these are my brothers - Dev and Shiva Pandya. My family and I run a small store here in Somnath - Pandya Store. I hear that you are interested in building a mall here and might be interested in acquiring our store as part of it?” Gautam started off. There was no response from whoever sat with their back turned towards the brothers at the head of the table.
“Sir, we’ve done the research. Based on the market predictions and your investment portfolio…” Dev started droning out numbers and figures and projections and how the Somnath market would not be profitable to them. But still, there was absolutely no response.
Shiva had been sitting quietly but this Project Head’s disrespect of his brothers was really bothering him. Dev had given a run down of his entire presentation but there wasn’t any sound or movement from the other end of the table. He hadn’t so much as turned around to acknowledge their presence.
“I know you think we are here to dissuade you to save our shop and I will admit honestly that it’s true. But all the facts and figures my brother, Dev presented here are true too,” Gaumbi tried to coax a response.
The awkward silence stretched from seconds to minutes and Shiva’s control finally snapped. “Chalo Gaumbi! Lagta hai ek ghanta lunch karke Uncleji so gaye hain. Koi faayda nahi baath karke.” He got up from his chair and grabbed Gaumbi’s arm to get him to stand up.
“Kya kar raha hai, Shiva? Maine tujhe kaha na, tu chup rahega? Agar chup nahi reh sakta tho tu baahar chala jaa. Hamare paas sirf yeh ek mauka hai, please apne gusse se iss mauke ko bhasm math kar,” Gaumbi whispered sternly and Shiva looked away irritated.
“Anger is like fire, Mr. Pandya. Very hard to tame and control.”
The Pandya brothers looked surprised as a female voice rang loud and clear in the conference room. They looked at each other frantically trying to make sense of what was happening.
“Also, anger is messy. Puts up too much of a spectacle. I much prefer vengeance. It’s cold, calculating, ruthless and precise. And the best part, no one expects the damage it can cause because it does not put on a show.”
The person at the head of the table finally swiveled their chair around and the Pandya brothers stood shocked as if the earth had slipped from underneath their feet.
“Raavi..” Shiva whispered as he drank in her sight. She had changed. Her hair was shorter, pulled back into a severe bun, her eyes were hidden behind thick rimmed glasses. She wore a crisp white shirt paired with a gray pencil skirt and sat back in the chair with a sense of power, authority and confidence that he’d only seen once in the old Raavi, when she rightfully claimed her spot at the cash counter of Pandya Store. His heart hurt, he felt relieved, he felt anger, he felt so many emotions all at once but foremost, he was relieved. Relieved that she was alive and well and sitting here in front of him.
“Raavi!” Gaumbi exclaimed out loud. “Raavi.. kahan thi tu itne saal? Aise koi gayab hota hai kya? Patha hai hum kaise paagalon ki tarah tujhe dhund rahe the?” Gautam took a step forward to hug Raavi but she raised her hand gesturing him to stop.
“In all your research, Mr. Gautam Pandya, did you not care to look up who you’d be meeting with? Clearly not, the way you’ve been addressing me as Sir for the past 25 minutes,” she said, her steely gaze fixed squarely on Gaumbi.
“Raavi.. tu..” Gautam started to say something but she interrupted him. “Mr. Gautam Pandya, I don’t think we have a relationship where we get to address each other by our first names. Please let’s keep it formal. You may call me Ms. Mehta,” she said coldly.
That riled Shiva up. “Aye Chipkali! Chaar baatein English mein kya seekh li bolni, ab tu Gaumbi ko sikhayegi?” He burst out.
She raised an eyebrow in mock amusement as she shot a glance towards Shiva, before dismissing his presence altogether and focusing back on Gautam. “A remarkably impressive negotiating team I must say, Mr. Pandya. I am bowled over by Mr. Pandya No.3’s charming people skills.” Shiva was about to say something else but Gaumbi held his arm in a vice grip to stop him. He shook his head at Shiva, warning him not to mess anything up.
“Raa.. I mean, Ms. Mehta, if you take a look through this file, you will realize that this business decision may not be worth your while at all,” Dev said, passing along the folder in his hand to her, trying to diffuse the tense situation. Raavi did not even touch the folder as she chuckled mirthlessly.
“I don’t need you to tell me what decision is worth my while, Mr. Pandya No. 2. Besides…” Raavi said, leaning back in her chair, fiddling with a glass paper weight as if that was much more interesting than the people in front of her. She looked up with a determined gaze and said,
“…this decision was never about business.
It was and always will be personal.”
