Chapter 2 Kuch Teri Ghata, Kuch Mera Kasoor
Five years ago…
Rain beat down mercilessly on her shivering form as she walked lugging her suitcase behind her. She felt oddly numb. The pain, anger, hurt, everything seemed to have left her body just as suddenly as they’d come in, leaving her empty and numb.
She didn’t know how long she’d been walking for, she was supposed to go to her Maasimaa’s house but once she’d turned the corner from Pandya Niwas, her feet seemed to have decided that that wasn’t the path she would take. In a sense, maybe that was good, Raavi thought. If Maasimaa saw her in this state, she’d unleash all the venom she had towards the Pandyas and especially, Shiva. And Raavi wasn’t sure she could handle anymore venom right now. The poison in Shiva’s hurtful words now coursed through her veins inching her towards what she was certain, a slow and painful death. But she was such an emotional fool, her heart still hurt, she realized, if anyone said anything bad about Shiva or the Pandyas.
Why did she have to be such an emotional fool? Why had she given Shiva the power to hurt her so? How could her appearance, her education and her friendly nature have led to her destruction? Raavi fell to the ground crying. She picked up fistfuls of mud and smeared it over her face and arms, again and again. Maybe if she didn’t look good, he wouldn’t doubt her. Maybe if she didn’t step out of the house, he would be more secure about her. He hadn’t even listened to his Dhara Bhabhi’s pleas to reconsider! Maybe that was how much he hated her? Then what about all those moments where she’d seen a softer side to him? Had she been mistaken? Had she really been a complete fool?
At some point, the rain stopped and the sun came out from behind the dark clouds. Raavi had no idea how long she’d been sitting by the road. The rain had washed away most of the dirt she’d slathered on herself. She heard noises and realized people were coming along the road. She didn’t want to see anyone so she quickly got up and hid behind a tree, hugging her knees close to her chest.
“Lekin hum jaa kahan rahe hain, Kaveri?”
She heard Jamna Kaki’s voice and folded into herself further, definitely not wanting to draw the attention of the gossipmonger duo.
“Arey Jamna Ben! Pandya Niwas mein jashn mana rahe hain,” she heard Kaveri kaaki respond and her heart lurched. The Pandyas were celebrating?
“Jashn? Kaisa jashn? Kis baath ka jashn?”
“Arey, tum ne suna nahi? Shiva aur Raavi ke beech ghamasaan ladaayi hui hai Kanwad yatra ke baad, lagbhag poore ke poore Somnath ke saamne. Maine suna Shiva ne Raavi ko uske doston ke saath range haathon pakda tha! Woh keh bhi raha tha, ki Raavi ko gentleman log zyada pasand hai..”
“Kaisi baath kar rahi ho, Kaveri? Raavi tho apni bachchi hai, bachpan se dekh rahe hain na usse? Woh aisa kaise kar sakthi hai?” Jamna kaaki retorted.
“Arey! Humme kya patha sachayi kya hai? Aakhir uski shaadi Shiva se majboori mein hui thi na? Kya patha? usne Shiva se shaadi karne ke liye haan isi liye kaha ho ki woh ghar mein rehkar Dev par dore daal sake? Ab Shiva thode na aise hi bina baath ke itni badi baath kahega? Woh kyun Raavi pe bina baath ke itna bada ilzaam lagayega? Aakhir hai tho Raavi Prafulla ki hi parvarish na?” Kaveri explained.
“Agar ladayi hui hai tho phir jashn kis baath ka?” Jamna kaaki asked.
“Wohi tho! Sunne mein aaya hai, Shiva ne Raavi ko uski harkaton ki wajah se ghar se bahar nikal diya hai. Ab kuch na kuch tho uss ladki ne kiya hi hoga jo uske jaane par poora parivaar yun paagalon ki tarah poore mohalle mein dhol-nagade bajake, patakhe phodke, mithayiyaan baantkar khushi mana raha hai!” Kaveri said.
“Poora parivaar? Suman Ben aur Dhara bhi?” Jamna kaaki asked.
“Haan! Suman, Dhara, Gautam, Dev, Rishita, Shiva, Krish.. sab ke sab paagalon ki tarah khushiyaan mana rahe hain. Kisi ne Shiva ko kehte bhi suna ki yeh din unke parivaar ke liye sabse zyada khushi waala din hai.”
The voices of the ladies faded as they walked further down the road and Raavi felt herself tremble. The Pandya parivaar, the one she’d loved, supported and considered her own since childhood was celebrating her leaving? They were actually celebrating? With music, dance and festivities? Was she that horrible a person that they were all so happy to get rid of her?
No! Even if Shiva celebrated her leaving, she knew for sure Dhara di and Gaumbi would never. They would never be that petty. With hurried steps though, she found herself heading back towards Pandya Niwas, covering her head with the edge of her pallu so no one would notice her.
The sight that met her eyes felt worse than dying a thousand deaths. Every word Kaveri kaaki had said was true. All of the Pandya family was gathered on the street, laughing, dancing and celebrating. They were genuinely happy to have gotten rid of her. So happy! A sob threatened to escape her mouth so Raavi bit down hard on her hand covering her face with her pallu to muffle the noise as the sound of Shiva playing the dhol reverberated in the very center of her chest.
All around her, she heard different versions of gossip being whispered, all along the same lines: that Shiva had found Raavi being “over friendly” with her friends or Shiva had caught Raavi trying to seduce/flirt with Dev. That had resulted in Shiva throwing her out of the house and now the Pandyas were celebrating the good riddance. After all, who would want a characterless girl as their ghar ki izzat? Who would have thought that behind that innocent face of Raavi’s she would turn out to be such a besharam ladki? What kind of ladki tries to seduce her husband’s brother? Chee.. chee.. Thank God! Shiva got rid of her. Bechara, he is such a straightforward guy and to think Raavi used him so..
The words pricked Raavi like her chest being torn open to lay out her bleeding heart. The sight of the whole Pandya family dancing merrily felt like a knife being twisted into her open, beating heart. She slowly walked away. Anger, hurt, tears, clouding her vision. She let go of her luggage and broke into a run. Where to? She had no clue.
It seemed like she’d been running for an eternity. It was getting harder to draw air into her lungs. Like her lungs were on fire. Like all of her was on fire - from the accusations, from the pain, from the anger that boiled within her. But she did not, could not stop running. If she stopped running.. maybe she would die.. die from the pain of it all. So she kept running and running..
Till darkness clouded her vision completely and she fell into its welcoming embrace willingly. This was it. It was all done now. This was the end. No more pain, no more hurt. Just nothingness.. The welcome end.

I don't like where this is heading, but was inevitable. Hopefully, knowing Dhara's kiddo's info, Raavi can do some math to figure out the details. All I ask is for happy ending!
