Prologue

Shiva exited the police station and walked home. It had been his routine for 5 years. For 5 years, every morning and evening, he had to come to the station as proof that he hadn’t absconded.

5 years.. 

5 years had passed since Raavi had gone missing and Maami had registered a complaint against him that he was responsible. They’d scoured through all of Somnath and Gujarat. Tracked down every one of her friends and acquaintances hoping to get some idea about her whereabouts.. but she was gone. Gone, without a trace. Someone at the station had casually told him that two more years and they could officially apply for a death certificate and he wouldn’t have to keep coming in every day. The fear that ran down his spine at the thought was so chilling and painful, he felt like death had gripped him. 

The guilt he’d been living with for the past five years had been so immense, Shiva was sure even death wouldn’t hurt as much. He’d run through the memories hundreds and thousands of times in his mind again and again. Their fights, their ugly showdown in front of all of Somnath after the Kanwad yatra, how she left Pandya Niwas to go back to her Maami’s house but she’d never made it there. 

He had thought of all possible ways to track her but it was like she’d vanished into thin air without a trace. He should have looked more then. He should look more now. It wasn’t too late. He refused to believe it was too late. He was responsible for all this and he was willing to do anything, pay any price to see her smile again, to hear her call him “Bhootnath”, to have her fight with him… to hell with all that, just to be able to lay eyes on his Chipkali one more time.
