He was one confusing character in the movie.

He was so much in love with his Punjab, Punjab Di Khushbu, Makke Di Roti, Sarson Da Saag, and on the other hand, he hated the angrezi sabhayata.

If you don't like the foreign culture, then what the fuck are you doing on a foreign land for 22 years? What was the point of living like a stranger in London, not even socializing with NRIs to keep your sanskriti and sabhayata? Why not just go back to your pind, your Punjab, your apna desh?

I suppose he was one of those chutiyas who was in awe of the western culture in his young days, and desperately wanted to settle in a western country. But after settling down in London, he got a culture shock and realized the value of his pind.

But then why he didn't go back to his desh? His excuse was that he didn't have money to go back, but he had money to live in London for 22 years which is one of the costliest cities in the world?

Then when he got to know about his daughter's affair, he sold all his property in one night, as if it's a type of sale shown in those OLX ads, and went back to India the very next morning itself. As if going from London to India is same as going from Juhu to Bandra. No Passport or Visa issues, and you can easily get a ticket for a flight.

That’s how a NRI is supposed to be according to BW movies of the 90s

Don’t know if things have changed in recent movies

Bold - It’s that logic that made BW audience fall in love with it, so much so that they made it the longest running movie in history.

Even NRIs love it 🤷‍♀️

That's exactly what I want to know. There is a country that you grew up in, the land of your ancestors. Then, there is the country that you're living in for umpteen number of years, the one that welcomed you (or one assumes you wouldn't have stayed), nurtured you, made you what you are.

How do you then proceed to badmouth one in favor of the other? How do you choose between biological mother and adoptive mother?

That you do says more about you as a person - an ingrate focused only on money - rather than about either of the 2 nations.

P.S. This doesn't  include criticism from within the country out of a desire to see it do better. BW In general doesn't do those.

Ridiculous post! People live in foreign lands for many reasons. For better opportunities, better standard of living, Money, Job/Business, Kids education. That doesn't mean you can't miss home.

What about the people who uproot to another country live a comfortable existence, enjoys the perks, then actively try to destroy it, harm it

Some flee their homeland bcz the conditions become unlivable, then try to change the system of the country that accepted them and make it similar to the very country they escaped from... Why?

Also he was a bad father....what kind of father would just marry off his daughter who has grown up in London...has no idea about India...that also a little village somewhere..never met her would be husband before....(I hate these idiots who make a promise to marry off their kids as soon as they are born....to one of their friend's kid}....and he expected her to stay there her whole life and adjust....Pita ji they ya jallad???😳

That is why don't look for logic in a BW movie...just enjoy...😆

No I don't think so.....may be it was the concept that he wanted to marry Simran with the consent of her family and not just bhaga kar....a concept very alien to today's generation...but I am sure the people must have loved it back then...like they say its two families that get married not just the groom and bride,

Missing your home is one thing, it’s natural

Hating your adopted country where you spent decades, isolating yourself and yet not even thinking about moving back is another

Remember it was his choice

If you don’t believe that people like Simran’s dad exist then I can deduce one fact about you- you’ve never lived abroad and mixed with Desi immigrants here...

Plenty of people like him in that generation and even the next one!

In fact many are worse also... they would probably force Simran to marry Kuljeet even after everything that happened...

Simran’s dad was redeemed in the end by the fact that he saw the error of his ways... unfortunately some traditional desi parents wouldn’t do that no matter what🤦🏽‍♀️.

I agree about the suddenly moving away to India but though, that would never be so easy!
