Chapter-4:
It was night once again, and her wait for him continued. With a book in her hand, Bondhita laid on the couch in the study. She knew it was one place he would surely come to, once he was back home. So, instead of going to their room, she decided to wait for him in the study itself. From 10 o'clock, it became 11 o'clock, and in no time it was past midnight, and there was still no trace of him. She was getting impatient as well as worried for him. She would pace around in the room and then sit on the couch for some time and then pace again. In no time she has exhausted herself and succumbed to tiredness.
When her eyes opened, it was already 5 in the morning. At 6, her Kaka Sasur had the habit of doing Aarti. Now that she was back in the haveli, she too would have to join him. More importantly, this early in the morning, she would be able to catch him before he left again for work. Feeling energized just at the thought of meeting him, she happily skipped to the washroom to freshen up.
Taking blessings from Kaka Sasur, she joined him for the morning Aarti. Once it was over, she realized, he was nowhere to be seen in the haveli. He was not there in the study, and when she went to freshen up in their room, she couldn't find him there too. Where was he then? Did he leave this early for work, she doubted it. "Kaka Sasur...", no longer able to contain her curiosity, she turned to question about his whereabouts knowing well that her Kaka Sasur must be aware of it. But knowing well his Bahu, he answered before she could ask him, "Nahi aaya hai kal se Anirudh, use hi dhoondh rahi ho na jabse aayi ho? Hum bhi toh use hi dhoondh rahe hain. Pata nahi kya kaam aa para hai achanak se ki ghar aane tak ki bhi shudh nhi hai. Saurabh ne bataya humein. Arre kam se kam tumse milne toh aa sakta tha na? Kitne saalon baad aayi ho, lekin nahi ise toh bas apne kaam ki hi pari hai. Humari koi baat sunta kahan hai. Arre tumhare aane ke pehle tak toh ghar pe tha aur dekho ab mano gayab hi hogaya hai. Lekin koi baat nahi bahu, tum aagayi hona ab tum hi sudharna ise.", saying that he went from there leaving a dejected Bondhita behind.
She was beginning to wonder if he was trying to avoid her. "What could be so important that he couldn't find time to come and meet her? Was he not happy with her return? What could she do to meet him, should she visit his office?" she pondered. No! why should she? He should come and know that she was upset with him. Suddenly an idea came to her mind. Feeling excited like a naughty kid, she rushed to find Batuk. After hearing his Boudi's plan, even Batuk couldn't keep himself from smiling. Now it was time to put the plan into action and see if he still manages to continue this hide and seek.
"Dada, dada... Kahan ho aap?", Batuk called out Anirudh after reaching his office. Seeing Batuk panting, Anirudh asked in a worried tone, "Kya hua hai Batuk? Iss tarah haanf kyun rahe ho? Sab kuch thik haina ghar pe?". "Dada, wo Boudi... wo Boudi ko...", before Batuk could even finish his sentence, fearing something has happened to Bondhita, Anirudh had already rushed out of his office. Seeing his Dada's condition even thinking that something might have happened to Bondhita, Batuk shook his head at how easily Bondhita's plan has worked.
"Kaka, Bondhita kahan hai?", asked a breathless Anirudh as soon as he entered the haveli. Though puzzled at his condition, Kaka answered, "Tumhare study mai hi hogi na, wahin toh hoti hai pure din jabse yahan aayi hai, kitabon mai gum." Getting the needed answer, he ran in the direction of the study where Bondhita stood in a corner contemplating the most awaited moment since she left the haveli.
The door of the study burst open as Anirudh stormed in shouting "Bondhita, Bondhita..." His eyes fell on her, as she stood near the large window, with her back facing him. Within a second, he was standing near her, turning her towards himself and then, sliding his hands over her face and arms, making sure she was alright. "Tum thik ho na? Kahin lagi toh nahi? Tum kuch bolti kyun nahi?", not getting any response from her in return, he looked into her eyes, which were staring at him with so many emotions that it made his heart race. Realizing how close he was standing to her, he tried taking his hands off her arms, only to have her clasp his hands tightly into hers, just like she had done the other night in her sleep. He stood rooted on the spot, as every emotion that he had been trying to hide resurfaced with full force.
