Chapter 2
Anirudh stood behind the pillar in the verandah, hidden in the darkness of the night, watching the motor car come to a stop. She was back. Back after four long years. Four years, 1 month, 9 days and 11 hours to be precise. What? Don't think that he has been counting the days, he just liked to be accurate. Wasn't the first part of the sentence a complete lie. He had never thought that he would get so used to having her around him all the time that living without her would seem like a punishment.
He had missed her chatter, her questions, her thoughts, her playfulness, all of her. Though she would write about every little happenings in the letter, it never felt enough to him. It never measured up to having her narrate it sitting in front of him in his study where he could see her every little expression. He had missed having her in front of his eyes.
The familiar sound of her anklet fell into his ears, bringing him out of his thoughts. He saw her step down from the car. But with her back facing him, he couldn't see her face. She had grown taller, he noticed.
"Bahu, Batuk aagaye tum dono", Trilochan Kaka was heard saying as he came at the door with a big smile on his face. "Bihari jao jake aarti ki thal leke aao.", he ordered. "Ji malik. Hum abhi leke aaye.", saying this Bihari hurried to get the thal.
Over the years, Bondhita had slowly grown to become the doting daughter he never had. "Pranam Kaka Sasur", Bondhita bent down to touch his feet. "Arre jeeti raho bahu. Ab tum aagayi ho na mano ghar ki raunak waapas aagayi ho.", he blessed her getting emotional over her return after so many years.
On the other side, Anirudh found himself getting impatient with every passing second. He felt stupid for choosing such a bad hiding spot. What he didn't understand was why was he hiding from her in the first place. Wasn't he yearning for this day to arrive since she went away? And now, when she was finally here, he just couldn't bring himself to go in front of her. But why was he feeling this way? She was just his student and he was her mentor, nothing more, nothing less. Or has his feelings changed?
Before he could ponder more, he felt himself take a sharp breath as he saw her turning to look in the direction where he was standing. Though he knew she couldn't see him, he felt his heartbeats quicken as he looked at her. He had seen her grow from an eight-year-old kid to a seventeen-year-old teenager. But now, there stood a young woman in her place.
She had grown even more beautiful over these four years when she was not here with him, he realized. His eyes fell on the vermillion that filled her hair partition, the symbol of their relation, their marriage. Before he could stare any longer, she turned back and walked inside the house.
Bondhita found her eyes wandering everywhere, but she couldn't seem to find that one person that her heart has been seeking since she left this place four years back. "Kise dhoondh rahi ho bahu?", asked Trilochan babu even though he knew the answer to it. "Kisi ko bhi nahi. Woh itne saalon baad ghar waapas aayi hoon na bas isiliye dekh rahi hoon.", Bondhita lied, growing anxious at his absence. Where was he? Was he playing a prank on her? If that was so, then she will not talk to him, she decided.
Batuk looked at her, knowing well who was that person she was searching for. He was her friend after all. So he asked "Anirudh dada kahan hai Kaka? Kahin najar nahi aa rahe?". "Hum bhi wahi soch rahe hain. Subah se toh yahin tha. Abhi pata nahi kahan chala gaya.", replied Trilochan Kaka. "Bihari tumhe bataya hai kya kuch Anirudh ne?", Trilochan babu questioned Bihari. "Nahi malik, humse toh kuch nahi kaha. Bahurani ke ghar aane ke chand lamhe phle hi nikalte dekha unhe. Jaldi mai lag rahe the toh hum kuch puch nahi paye", answered Bihari. "Kuch jaruri kaam aagaya hoga. Aa jayega. Tum dono jao aaram karlo. Thak gaye hoge. Kafi raat bhi hogaya hai. Hum bhojan aur saaman Bihari ke haathon kamre mai bhejwa denge", Trilochan babu told them.
Bondhita felt her eyes prickle with unshed tears as disappointment settled in. She nodded silently, rushing up the stairs towards the room, in which she had spent nine years of her life. Nostalgia hit her as she looked around his room. Their room. The same fragrance, the same immaculateness. She sighed, feeling a tear roll down her eye.
He didn't come even once to meet her in these four years, she understood. He didn't come to her graduation ceremony, she felt let down but didn't complain. He didn't come to receive her, fine! And now, he was not here even when she was here.
Did he not miss her? Why would he? Who was she? Just someone he considered his mentee. That's all she was to him. She felt her heart break a little more at his absence. Maybe she was thinking too much. May be something very important did come up, she tried reasoning with herself. Not feeling hungry any more, she retired for the night.
