Akshay Kumar reunites with Ekta Kapoor for an action-comedy

The film is scheduled to go on the floors by the year-end; actor is planning five releases, which will be in different genres, for 2021

Akshay Kumar is currently working on three films that are all scheduled to release in 2021. While Atrangi Re, a cross-cultural love story spanning decades, kicks off in April, the action-entertainer Bachchan Pandey rolls by mid-May. Shooting for the actor’s third, the period-thriller Bell Bottom, begins around August.

Now, Mirror has learnt that Akshay has green-lit his fourth project, which will release in the second half of next year. The action-comedy marks the actor’s reunion with producer Ekta Kapoor—the duo last worked together seven years ago on the Milan Luthria-directed gangster drama Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara—and goes on the floors by the year-end.

According to a source close to the development, the duo has been discussing some ideas, in different genres, over the last few months, and finally zeroed in on this one. “Akshay signed the film around 10 days ago. The logistics are currently being worked out and the script is being finalised,” revealed the source, saying the yet-untitled film is a comic caper with some action and lots of humour. “It will be directed by a debutant and mounted on a lavish scale. Like all his films, Akshay will complete this one too in a start-to-finish schedule.”

The actor is planning five releases next year, with the last arriving towards the year-end. “He is reading scripts and will lock his calendar in a fortnight. He does not want to restrict himself to a particular genre and has made a conscious effort to sign diverse scripts,” the source added. He will next be seen in the titular role in Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi and will follow it up with a transgender turn in the Raghava Lawrence directed horror-comedy Laxmmi Bomb, which releases on Eid.
