Shahid Kapoor, who’s currently shooting for theJersey remake, will dive headlong into an action film after the emotional sports-drama releases in August. The actor has signed a big-scale, patriotic action-thriller that will be backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions along with Fox Star Studios, PeepingMoon.com can tell you exclusively. According to sources, Shahid was keen to explore something original after doing two back-to-back South remakes. He has been flooded with dozens of amazing scripts ever since Kabir Singhdid business of over 250 crores. He liked several, including a biking film and one with Neerja fame director Ram Madhvani, but Shahid was hesitant to sign them as he was looking for something thrilling and more gritty. His quest for the right project ended when KJo approached him with this true film with patriotic undertones.

This yet-untitled film of Shahid’s is based on Operation Cactus that the Indian government launched in the Maldives islands in 1988 to prevent a coup by a group of 200 Sri Lankan militants against then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The coup was led by Maldivian businessman Abdullah Luthufi and assisted by armed mercenaries of the Tamil secessionist organisation People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE).

On September 3, 1988, PLOTE’s mercenaries landed in the Maldivian capital of Male and seized key areas including the presidential palace. President Gayoom, who escaped and kept shifting his hiding bases, made calls to several countries seeking military intervention. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi responded. Operation Cactus started just hours after Gayoom’s request for intervention. Within nine hours, Indian Army paratroopers rescued the President and returned control of the capital to the Maldivian government. India received international acclaim for its swift, decisive action to restore stability in a neighbouring country.

Shahid is believed to be playing Brigadier Farukh Bulsara who commanded paratroopers of an Indian Army parachute brigade and regiment in this thrilling military operation. Vishal Bhardwaj’s assistant Aditya Nimbalkar, who assisted him inKaminey, Haider, Rangoon and Pataakha, will make his directorial debut with this film. The pre-production work is said to have already begun and the film will kick off in the second half of this year. Shahid will apparently undergo rigorous physical training to essay the character of a soldier.
