Hanuman's words kept ringing in Babita’s ears on a loop. A part of her wanted to escape from his circumference, she was extremely troubled whenever he said that he loves Imarti … so much. Another part of her wanted to hold him close and never let him go. The question remaining will she be able to do this? Will he allow her into his inner circle … ever?
“Babita pehenji mere sir saab khara sona hai … aap unhe chhodke jaane ki baat na Karo … woh kuch kaehenge nahi lekin andar hi andar tootke bikhar jaaenge.”
Lala had pleaded her not to leave. Well, she is not going anywhere now … not for the next five months at least. The truth remaining that she does not want to go anywhere. The Haveli of Thaanedaar Hanuman Singh vald Dasrat Singh vald Jeneral Singh is home. For Minnie, he is more than just a father. He is a friend confidante, a guide and an emotional anchor. Naeem Bi was warning her. The only doubt arising in her mind was that will Hanuman be able to love her for everything that she is? Will he be able to fall for her like she gradually started falling for him? Can she be happy like she wanted to be? All the efforts she was making trying to fall out of love were taking a toll on her head and heart. Can she hope against hope?
“Aapne toh kaha tha aap mhaare paas rehna chahte ho.” Babita looked back and there Hanumaan stood. Hands folded against his chest and hair ruffled carelessly after a hectic day at work.
“Aap iss waqt yaha? Sara din beet gaya, thakaan ho gayi hogi jaake so jaaiye.” She had a good point. What was he doing on the terrace at 11:30-ish in the night.
“Aap hi ne toh lease renew ki thhi naa … kaha tha aap achhe se adjust ho gaye ho mhaari haveli mein … bola thha ke aap mhaare paas hi rahoge…” He elaborated his point further.
“Kaha jaaungi … yahi hoon main.” Babita sighed.
“Ek baat bolu very honestly? Agar aap mother daughter chali jaati naa yaha se toh mhaare ghar me mhaara hi mann na lagta. Jab tak subah aapke haath ki chai na peeyu toh morning good na laage, Jab tak mhaari Queen Victoria ke kisse kahaniya na sunu tab tak day good na laage aur jab tak ghar waapas aakar yeh naa dekhlu ke aap theek ho … mhaari chhori theek hai tab tak night good naa laage.”
Babita was astonished because of everything that he said just now. 'Did he actually say that?' Her heart asked. 'Yes my dear.' Her brain replied. Can she steal this moment from time and muster courage to cherish it?
“Main samajhta hoon … achhe se jaanu hu ke aapne jaane ke baare mein kyon socha …” He continued and Babita could feel her eyes brimming with tears.
“Uss raat mujhe naa bolna chahiye tha woh sab … maine dil tod diya aapka … mujhe pata hai mhaare se ghor paap hua hai … main maaphi ke laayak toh naa hu lekin phir bhi bolunga ke ho sake toh mhanne maaphi dena … Bajrang Bali jaane hai mhaara sara sach … woh denge mhanne sajaa…”
“Bilkul sahi kaha aapne … aapke saare shabd chubhe mujhe … chubhte rahe … itne chubhe ki main toot ke bikhar gayi … yahi sochti rahi ke kaise aapne mujhe chot di lekin yeh samajh hi nahi paayi ke aapne aisa kyon kiya … kyon aap baar baar mujhe apne aap se dur karne ki koshish karte rahe …”
Hanuman was taken aback. He did not see this coming. He had not expected Babita to understand his reasons. “Aap mhaare se esse kyon baat Kar rahi ho?” This was what he was able to ask as tears streamed down her face. He immediately took out a handkerchief out of his pocket and offered it to her.
“Sahi keh rahi hoon … bohot buri hoon main. Aapne mujhe hurt Kiya hai lekin maine bhi toh aapko kitni baar hurt kiya hai. Pata nahi kab aur kaise main itni selfish ho gayi ... Sirf apne baare mein sochti rahi … Aap mujhse maafi maang rahe hai lekin kya aap mujhe kabhi maaf kar paaenge?”
Hanuman closed his eyes. This was certainly not the right time to have a conversation like this. The gravity of the situation lay deeper than he thought. He knew they need to talk … a lot but if they had to talk about everything right now she won’t be able to take it. He cannot hurt her and he can never see her cry. He cannot put her through this. This discussion has to be saved for some another day, for the right time.
“Kiraayedaarni ji aap bhi bohot wonderful ho main kitni training karke aapse kehne aayaa ki mhanne maaphi dedo lekin aap toh khade khade tesuen bahaa rahi ho… galat hai yo … I don’t like.”
“Aap mujhe maaf nahi karenge?” Babita wiped her tears and noticed that it is the same handkerchief that she had gifted to him. She saw the embroidered 'H'.
“Ek doosre se maaphi hum baadme manenge lekin abhi jo aapne ganga jamuna bahaake jo crime kiya hai naa main uski sajaa sunaunga” Hanuman spoke in his police man tone.
“Haa jaaiye … jaake karaaiye FIR.” She complained cutely.
“Naa … Haveli hai mhaari … Thana na hai jo FIR karwaau.”
Babita was getting tensed. How is he going to punish her? Is he going to ask her to leave immediately after the lease is over? Is he not going to talk to her after today? Is he going to give her the silent treatment ... Again?
“Meetha chahiye mhanne aapke bolte masalo ki rasoi se … mhaare liye banado kuch meetha.” He demanded.
“Kya???” Babita was baffled.
“Haa … kitni khusi ka din hai aaj … Bhaarat maa ka swatantrata diwas uske upar aaj Thaanedaar Hanuman Singh apne poore rubaab mein … phul phorm mein uniphorm mein duty nibhaane waapas gaya hai … bolo hai ke nahi khusi ki baat?” Hanuman Singh was certainly back and how!
“Baat toh sahi hai aapki … bataaiye kya banau aapka mooh meetha karne ke liye? As you wish, as you like” Babita asked with a smile.
“Halwa … Badaam ka?” She suggested as he kept thinking.
“Na!” He cluck his tongue. “Kheer khaane ka mann ho raha hai.”
“Theek hai Inspector Hanuman Singh … aaj Patiala Babes aapki seva mein haazir.” He chuckled as she walked towards the kitchen.
