Hindi is not India's national language. India has no national language; 22 languages have the official status, such as English, Telugu, Bengali, Assamese, Manipuri, etc. and Hindi is just one of them.

For such a proud nationalist, you seem to have very little knowledge of your own country.

I am guessing that, with mutual agreement , they would have picked up everything. Regardless of that, i dont think it's an issue, at the end of the day it's in india. south india , bengal , odisha is in india right?

I am not going to comment on your guess, because it is mere speculation.

You also liked a comment which says Hindi is India's national language, it is not.

I do think it is an issue. India is a country of diversity, and the rich diversity ought to be celebrated, not opressed. Mile sur mera tumhara is an example where many languages and cultures have been included to create one song. That is admirable. Not this.

There is no national language in India.[2] Part XVII of the Constitution of India designates Hindi as the official language of the Union and a clause "or in English" is added for carrying out daily official work[3][4]. The article 343, point 1, specifically mentions that, "The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devnagari script. The form of numerals to be used for the official purposes of the Union shall be the international form of Indian numerals."[4] English is used in official purposes such as parliamentary proceedings, judiciary, communications between the Central Government and a State Government. States within India have the liberty and powers to specify their own official language(s) through legislation. In addition to the official languages, the constitution recognises 22 regional languages, which includes Hindi but not English, as scheduled languages, that are not be confused with official status of the Union. The number of native Hindi speakers is about 25% of the total Indian population; however, including dialects of Hindi termed as Hindi languages, the total is around 44% of Indians, mostly accounted from the states falling under the Hindi belt. Other Indian languages are each spoken by around 10% or less of the population.[5][6]

So there..It is the official language of the union and spoken and understood by majority

As per your earlier comment, only 25% are native Hindi speakers and only 44% understand Hindi. More than half the population are not Hindi speakers.

Unity should be in embracing and accounting for all the diversity, not just pandering to the majority.

While diversity is needed, having a song in Hindi does mean that it is accessible and understood by more people. Considering that Hindi is spoken by ~45% of the Indian population and has official recognition in 13 states and 3 UTs, it makes perfect sense for that to be chosen for this song by the government who’d want more people to be able to understand this without translation. No one is barring anyone else interested to release songs in other languages.

Note: Edited from ~50% to 45%
