Jabariya Jodi' movie review: Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra make a mess of this wedding party

The film pulls us in too many directions and lacks a cohesive script to keep us engaged.

How do you take a serious social issue like ‘forced marriages’ and turn it into two-and-a-half hours of mindless ‘entertainment’ injected with a heavy dose of humour alongside a haphazard plotline?
Don’t worry, Prashant Singh, the director of romantic comedy Jabariya Jodi will show you.

Jabariya Jodi is based on the concept of ‘pakadwa vivaah’ or forced marriages that is rampant in parts of Bihar and UP,  where eligible grooms are kidnapped by hired hands and married at gunpoint to girls, whose families can’t afford the heavy dowry demanded by the boy’s side.

Sidharth Malhotra plays Abhay Singh, a Patna based goon who has been brainwashed by his dictatorial father Hukum Dev Singh (played quite menacingly by Javed Jaffrey) into thinking he’s performing a social service rather than a criminal act through his ‘groom kidnapping’ business.

When his long lost childhood sweetheart Babli Yadav (Parineeti Chopra) steps back into his life, lo and behold, Abhay Singh undergoes a change of heart.

Sidharth Malhotra’s USP is undoubtedly his chocolate boy hero image, notwithstanding his dark turn in movies like Ek Villain, Ittefaq and Aiyarri. Despite his best efforts, Malhotra unfortunately can’t pull off the desi boy look. His tapori act seems forced and his gelled hair, pristine white pants and multi-hued shirts, do nothing to give credence to his small-town boy image. He is too suave for this movie set in the hinterlands of India.

On her part Parineeti Chopra’s flaming red hair is extremely distracting (as are her bizarre midriff baring outfits) and it doesn’t help that half the time she is acting coy and fiddling with her extensions.

In a patriarchal society where women are seen as mere commodities to be married off or doormats (like Abhay’s mother), Babli ‘Bomb’, as she is referred to for her firecracker personality, had great potential, but the character sadly fails to live up to it.

The lead pair certainly turn in ‘stand out’ performances - they are so out of place in small town Patna that they stick out like sore thumbs – with loud makeup and garish clothes.

Both Abhay and Babli’s characters, do a complete flip in the second half of the movie – from bold, don’t give-a-damn attitude sporting youngsters, they start acting like lovelorn couples mooning over each other – to the extent you get tired of the act.

Sanjay Mishra as Babli’s long suffering, sleepwalk prone father Duniyalal does a fantastic job and gets ample screen space to show off his histrionics. So does Aparshakti Khurana as Babli’s poetry sprouting friend, Santosh Pathak, who walks around with his heart on his sleeve.

If only the makers had kept it a pure mindless fun movie, it might have worked. Jabariya Jodi pulls us in too many directions and lacks a cohesive script to keep us engaged. The only saving grace, if it can be called that, is some fabulous dialogues that keep you chuckling even as you wait for the movie to come to an end. Much like this gem, which the hero’s friend sprouts at one point: “Jabariya shaadi is like Chinese goods, you can’t guarantee how long it will last.” We only wish the movie hadn’t lasted so long.

Review threads always annoy me because after a few pages reviews get repeated and people easily go off topic.  But I’ll give this one a try for Sid.

Jabariya Jodi Movie Review: Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra’s Film is Engaging and EnjoyableJabariya Jodi, starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra, released in theaters everywhere today. The romantic comedy is ultimately an enjoyably fun flick that keeps its audience engaged.

Set in Bihar, with dialogs like ‘This is Bihar where no one really knows what’s happening’ this wacky romcom starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra is an engaging, light watch that offers enough depth to take it seriously at the right points. Armed with great dialogs and a massively talented supporting cast, Jabariya Jodi is going to be a fun weekend watch that you can definitely enjoy with your friends and family.

The story begins with a sweet love story between two preteens in Bihar who are separated because Babli (who grows up to be Parineeti Chopra) moves away from the city. Abhay Singh (growing up to be Sidharth Malhotra) is someone who ‘forcefully’ kidnaps young men for forced marriages. This premise takes time to establish because it’s fairly confusing why Abhay does this. He’s like the Robin Hood of Bihar except he picks up grooms and takes money for it. The reason behind this strange practice is dowry: many families don’t have enough money for dowry so they kidnap men (and Abhay Singh’s men even assure ‘settlement’ post marriage) to marry their daughters.

The film stays engaging despite the confusing and flimsily established premise mainly due to the dialogs, the excellent supporting cast and due to the fact that it doesn’t take itself seriously at any point in time. It’s light and frothy and perfect for a time pass.

Still from Jabariya Jodi

One may wonder why Sidharth Malhotra was cast in the role that obviously belongs to a goon but there is an element of sensitivity and kindness that Sidharth displays well. There are moments where you would expect him to be OTT given the role he’s given but as the film progresses you understand why Sidharth’s tender portrayal was necessary for this role. You want to see beyond the toxic macho male and see an emotional, truthful being, which Siddharth does very well.

Parineeti Chopra looks and plays the part of the rebellious heroine well. From her green liner to red streaks, she looks the part completely. However, Parineeti’s strength is her comedic timing and unconventional good looks. Parineeti should definitely opt for roles that focus on her ability to execute the devil-may-care attitude instead of where she’s just looking like ‘the chick’.

The dialog and the supporting cast make the film thoroughly enjoyable. Sanjay Mishra as Babli’s doting yet orthodox father is hilarious. Javed Jaffrey as Abhay Singh’s father is menacing and Sheeba Chadha’s Abhay’s mother has a small but powerful presence in the film. Aparshakti Khurrana especially stands out with his sweet and hilarious portrayal of Santo, Babli’s best friend who also happens to be in love with Santo. A part of me wanted Babli to dump Abhay and marry Santo!

Sanjeev K Jha, who hails from Bihar himself, clearly seems to be writing from a place that he knows really well. Though it is filled with typical tropes towards the climax, the enjoyable soundtrack (Najanay Kya Dhoondein Ankhiyan is especially lovely) and well written dialog makes for a fun watch.

As far as small town romcoms go, which seem to be the new genre in Bollywood, Jabariya Jodi is one of the better ones.

The romantic comedy venture, which was earlier titled Shotgun Shaadi has been in the news since 2018 and was earlier slated to release on May 17, but to avoid clash with other films, the makers finally chose August 9 as the final date and the cherry on top is that it's a solo release for the film. BL Predicts: Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra's Jabariya Jodi will earn THIS much on its first day

What is it about:

Based on Pakadva Vivah that prevails in Bihar and some smaller town in India, Jabariya Jodi narrates the story of a thug (Abhay Singh) who kidnaps grooms in order to help them avoid paying out heavy dowries for their wedding. With the entry of the heroine, his whole ambition in life goes topsy-turvy.And not because he is madly in love but because inka focus "bistar se zyaada kursi pe hai". What ensues though is a battle or hearts and the girl (Babli Yadav) turning the kidnapper.

What's hot:

Sidharth steps into the role of Bihar ka goonda and pulls it off convincingly. Be it his flair in multi-coloured shirts and gamchas or the delivery with which he throws witty on-liners, Sid's first rustic act deserves a pat. Even Parineeti does justice to her character with pitch-perfect diction and makes it seem effortless. SidNeeti’s chemistry is a treat to watch too. Slow claps are reserved for Aparshakti Khurana and Sanjay Mishra who light up the screen with their comic timing and punches.

What's not:

The screenplay seems lazy and the editing, shoddy. Directed by Prashant Singh, the film wobbles at points and misses the plot more times than not. Especially the second half which beats around the bush for its entire duration without any plot device. The effort to soften the blow of social evils like dowry and forced marriage with comic intervention is note-worthy but debatable at best. And while Pari has caught hold of the accent, Sid's is inconsistent. The film is also replete with one too many forgettable songs. Even the climax overstays its welcome with predictable sequences and dialogues.

BL Verdict:

Watch it for Sid and Pari's dialoguebaazi and earnest effort. But otherwise, you will not miss out on much. We are going with two and a half stars. So, are you planning to watch the film this weekend? Tweet to us @bollywood_life and let us know!
