hypervisor should be good at following:

1- safety: VMM should have full control over virtualized resources

2- fidelity: behavior of application on GOS should be identical to that on bare hardware

3- efficient: VMM should involved as least as possible for VM stuff

mainframes were vertically integrated, meaning that a single vendor engineered thehardware, the hypervisor, the operating systems, and most of the applications.

hypervisors apply the well-known principle of adding a level of indirection to the domain of computer hardware. They provide the abstraction of virtual machines: multiple copies of the underlying hardware, each running an independent operating system instance. The virtual machines are isolated from other virtual machines, appear each as a duplicate of the underlying hardware, and ideally run with the same speed as the real machine

VMware adapted these core attributes of a virtual machineto an x86-based target platform as follows:

Compatibility: The notion of an ‘‘essentially identical environment’’ meant that any x86 operating system, and all of its applications, would be able to run without modifications as a virtual machine.

Performance: The overhead of the hypervisor had to be sufficiently low that users could use a virtual machine as their primary work environment.

Isolation: Software running inside virtual machines had to be prevented from any access that would allow it to subvert the hypervisor. Similarly, a hypervisor had to ensure the privacy of all data not belonging to the virtual machine.

challenges:

The x86 architecture was not virtualizable. It contained virtualization-sensitive,non privileged instructions, which violated the Popek and Goldberg criteria for strict virtualization

The x86 architecture was of daunting complexity. The x86 architecture was a notoriously complicated CISC architecture

x86 machines had diverse peripherals. The personal computers of the time could contain an enormous variety of add-in cards and devices, each with their own vendor-specific device drivers.

Need for a simple user experience. VMware needed a software delivery model with a simple installation experience to encourage adoption.

Here is a tribute to Maa Yashoda on this Mother's Day.

              Krishna's mother Yashoda -- A walking Miracle!!

Everyone in Nandgoan started loving Krishna the moment he was landed in the lap of Yashoda, who loved her kid deeply. Even when he was just an infant, it was all about the beautiful child that she had! But he grew too rapidly, shown many miracles from his infancy! His growth was phenomenal! No mother can adjust her motherhood to that kind of growth, so her motherhood disappeared somewhere by the time he was five or six. After that, she could not really be his mother, she adjusted herself as his devotee I feel, watched him with awe from the moment he has shown her the universe in his tiny mouth! She just loved him.

I can imagine him like, many times, he must be standing right across the river in Mathura, but he did not go back to Vrindavan because they had seen him as an absolutely carefree cowherd boy and he did not want to destroy their dream. After reaching Mathura, the kid lover transformed himself as a royal prince, was so different from the carefree dancer and flute player as far as he was in Brindavan.  Now that he had the role of bringing dharma to the world, he had to do many things that would have left them heartbroken, had they seen him like that. They were happy and fine the way they were, he thought! So he stopped himself from going back to visit his childhood parents and friends. ---

But the Brindavan and the milkmaids never distanced themselves from the thoughts of their Kanha, they made songs and poems about His childhood deeds and started singing those every morning while churning the curd!----

On that morning when Radha peeped into Yashoda's house, she saw her singing a song for her Kanha, describing him eating freshly made butter sitting in front of her. She was dressed in a maroon-yellow sari with a golden band around her waist. As she was pulling the churning rope, her bangles and earrings were moving and vibrating rhythmically. Because of her intense love for him, the melody was flowing from her sweet voice. Her face was wet with perspiration, and a few Bakula flowers had fallen from her hair, looking like stars fallen on the ground from the sky.

Every day, while churning curds, she remembered  Krishna's activities as a child, and in her own way, she revealed in singing his lovely deeds as songs to herself. She was singing one such song on that day when Radha visited her.

"Oh Krishna, show me your baby lion-like elegant walk once!  Oh Madhava, run, run and bring that fresh butter pot to eat.

Oh Krishna, show your face once to your mother. Wait for a while Krishna, let me tuck that peacock feather into your headband once again!

Oh, Krishna, Your tender feet ache because you walked so much. Don't make your hands dirty wiping your mouth smeared with butter. You are the jewel of the earth while dancing with your tinkling anklets on.

The whole world is fascinated by your presence, Maa Yashoda is blessed, her desires are fulfilled.

With no intention of disturbing her, Radha sat there soaking in that song. Those dulcet tunes created a wordless melody in her heart.

Radha looked at the horizon, she saw a light coalescing the earth and the sky.

hypervisor type 1:

  • This is also known as Bare Metal or Embedded or Native Hypervisor.
  • It works directly on the hardware of the host and can monitor operating systems that run above the hypervisor.
  • It is completely independent from the Operating System.
  • The hypervisor is small as its main task is sharing and managing hardware resources between different operating systems.
  • A major advantage is that any problems in one virtual machine or guest operating system do not affect the other guest operating systems running on the hypervisor.

Examples:

          VMware ESXi Server

          Microsoft Hyper-V

          Citrix/Xen Server
