Something Fresh It Is
Pacing back & fro, scratching his scalp almost pulling his hair off without realizing, Ridoy was getting impatient every passing second. Just 4 days to his engagement & he just could not control his excitement. As if he was waiting all his life for this day only! But alas, poor lad was still dreaming about that event unaware of his supposedly soulmate's feeling. He knew she wasn't keen about this proposal but her sudden acceptance gave him hope thus it wasn't confirmed that she had feelings for him.
Without realizing he had stepped into his beloved Dada's room who couldn't sleep an ounce bit.
Shan: Ridoy tui eto ratre ekhane [You're here this late]?
Ridoy: Dada I had to talk to you. Woh Asmita-Ji, I don't think she's ready.
Shan got up from his bed in surprise and held Ridoy by shoulders making him sit beside him on the bed.
Shan: Be open, why do you think that Asmita isn't ready for this alliance? Wasn't it her who agreed at first place?
Ridoy: Dada aap samajh nahin rahe, she was also the one who rejected my proposal & now suddenly, I don't want her to feel trapped in this relationship after the marriage.
Shan: Damn! Puchki agar tumhare wajeh se Ridoy ka dil phirse dukha toh main tumhe kabhi maaf nahin karunga. You calm down first of all & remove those negative thoughts maybe that's your fear which is making you think otherwise & Asmita isn't a small kid whose getting forced so that she'll marry you. So just relax & sleep, common!
Ridoy: You're right Dada, just a little excited.
Shan: Itni excitement toh tu apne birthday ke din bhi nahin rakhtha.
Ridoy: Birthday. Crap!
Shan: Kya hua?
Ridoy: Birthday happened! I mean, it's Asmita-Ji's birthday today!
Shan: Aaj Puchki ka janamdin hai aur main hi nahin hounga usko sabse pehle wish karne wala.
Ridoy: Dada, what say? Should I call her?
Shan: Her Birthday, you're the fianc so why asking me?
Ridoy: Common Dada no cold behaviour, after all its her birthday.
Shan just stays mum while Ridoy is dialing Asmita's number.
Meanwhile the bride to be is sitting on her bed digging her face into her lap crawling her legs. Soon her phone rang & after two rings she picked up the call while sniffing & clearly her voice.
Asmita: Hello (horse voice)?
Ridoy: Asmita-Ji? Ridoy here.
Ridoy keeps the phone on speaker so Shan was able to listen to her voice.
Asmita: Ridoy? Hi, any problem. You're calling this late?
Ridoy: Problem? No not at all. Actually just wanted to ask if you're doing fine?
Asmita: Haan. Mujhe kya hoga?
Ridoy: Nahin woh actually kuch nahin
Asmita: Ridoy thodi der hold kar sakte ho?
Actually there's another call?
Ridoy: One second, I just wanted to wish you
Just in a second Asmita puts him on hold but returns soon. Before Ridoy could utter a word, they heard a 3rd person's cheerful voice.
Voice: Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Didu! Happy Birthday to you! Shubho Jonmo Din Didu [Happy Birthday sister]!
Shan: Happy Birthday Asmita.
Hearing the voice, for a moment Ridoy went on a trance but recovered quickly.
Ridoy: Uh.. Happy birthday Asmita-Ji.

Shan: Sister? Again a drama of your's Puchki. Hello Dipti.

Shan: Dipti you're getting it wrong, I'm not your brother in law but my brother is, Ridoy.
Dipti: Oops! Sorry sorry, I hope he isn't upset. Is he listening?
Shan: Yes of course, speak to him.
Ridoy? Shan taps on Ridoy's shoulder who was still lost in Dipti's voice.
Ridoy: Huh? Yeah?
Dipti: Sorry Ridoy Jiju, I hope you didn't mind.
Ridoy: uh no it's all cool, mistakes happen.
Dipti: Right! Ok, one personal question?
Ridoy: Sure?
Dipti: How old are you? I mean no offense it's just to picturize you as you see my Didu hasn't shared a single photo of yours!
Ridoy: Oh, well I'm 21.
Dipti: What?! And you're still marrying Didu?! Knowing that she's 26!
Ridoy: Well... umm.. love doesn't see age right? It only sees the soul.
Dipti: You're right, I'm sure you both might have some chemistry that my Didu has finally agreed to get married!
Ridoy started to feel awkward & flushed, he even blushed a little before answering.
Ridoy: Yeah... right... chemistry...
Dipti: Then can I call you Ridoy as of we are the same age?
Ridoy: Of course!
Dipti: Well then, by the way I have a good news for you all.
Asmita: What is it? Dipti: I'm coming to Kolkata by tomorrow's flight! Shan: That's... wonderful.
Asmita got tensed thinking that if Dipti came then the fake family drama won't last for long.
Asmita: But Baba, chutki tui[kiddo you]
Dipti: Didu! No Chutki! And don't worry about Baba... he has explained me everything... in detail.
Asmita breathes a sigh of relief catching on her statement but a curious Ridoy had to break the moment.
Ridoy: So that means we are meeting tomorrow?
Dipti: Yes! Finally!
Shan: All right then, goodnight.
Asmita: Goodnight.
Ridoy: Goodnight Asmita-Ji, goodnight... Dipti.
Dipti: Goodnight Ridoy!
The calls end in a soft note where Ridoy has started to get butterflies in his stomach weirdly knowing the reason of its sensation. And one thing was for sure, it wasn't because of Asmita.
