Exactly five pounding beats later, she appeared - her arrival announced by the tinkling of anklets, and clinking of bangles, as always. What used to be the occasional visit had steadily become a lot more common of late - her fair form dropping by every night. And with each passing visit, the painting that was her face grew more vivid, more beautiful. So beautiful that it smothered him breathless.
Then, the mattress beside him shifted, as she took her usual spot.
'Kunwarsa...' The smile floated right through her sultry voice.
'Why? Why wouldn't you stop coming? Why wouldn't you stop haunting me?'
'Are you certain you want me to stop visiting? Because if you truly did, I would stop, you know...'
When he had no answer to give, she picked up his silk kerchief and dabbed the sweat off his forehead like a dutiful wife would, her raven curls falling on his face, tickling his jawbone in places.
'You are exhausted'
Her fingers teased the tendons on his arm that were throbbing from the countless hours of training he had been putting in. Practice was supposed to make one's skills 'perfect', but how much practice would be enough when duelling with the Ustaad, who was famed to be perfection personified?
'Out there... your friend, Khalil - the one who plundered my modesty - has been growing fat in prison... and here, you're overworking yourself, Kunwarsa... didn't you hear of what happened to the Ustaad? He is as good as dead, they say...'
'I know...' grumbled Mahender
'Oh Kunwarsa...' she tut-tutted her tongue, with a melody at the very tip of it -
'You ruined my sister, and her husband too.
You ruined your father's dreams and your wife true.
Worst of all, you ruined me through and through.
But amongst all these ruins, you never saw how you've ruined YOU!'
'Damn it, Durga Bai!'
He wished she'd stop. Wished she'd go away. But, she came nearly every night. And when she did, there was nothing he could do about it.
So, he lay there, waiting for the nightmares to end.
But would they ever?

Bindiya...' she called out, when they were still within earshot 'what is the commission I will be given... for predicting one winning horse correctly?'
The young maid stopped in her tracks.
'Baisa?' she spun around elatedly 'Commission? ANYTHING you ask for!'

'Yet you managed very well, Dhani... you've always been an actress on the outside and a mystical dreamer within... never thought THAT would come in such use one day!

It impressed me..BTW., after your remarks, I feel itchy to write something like this in calligraphy.Lashy, I have nibs of various sizes and pens with coloured cardridges ..All I acquired over the years..
With pleasure, dear...😳If you want one word for it all it is disillusionment...He was a child when he was rescued by Shehzaade... he was awed, enamoured & brainwashed by the man ... he pledged his everything to his Huzoor! He followed orthodoxy because his master followed it... (living a simple life without temptations)Overtime, he might have matured - and not approved of everything that his Huzoor did, but followed it anyway because of his sense of loyalty. He met Heera and that was the First time he wasn't able to follow his Huzoor blindly! Still, he continued because of his sense of loyalty. But, his first disillusionment happened at the capital, when Shehzaade showed more leniency towards Khalil rather than AkbarWhere he wouldn't give him mere privacy to advice him about FSWhere he let Heera be humiliated in the sabhaWhen he showed no real reaction even after AMK was on his kneesAnd then, the barbed whippingSo, KS finally saw the Prince for who he was - And is now disillusioned... what's the point of leading the life of simplicity, when you're hankering for power? What's the point of refraining from alcohol and hashish if you're killing your own brothers? What is the point of getting angry over a pinch of opium meant to save his life, from the Shehzaade who'd planned to shred him to bits?😳
