Feminism isn't some conspiracy against men though... it hopes to achieve true equality and equity among all genders. It is also about choice. It is the choice of one woman to add her husband's name to hers and another woman's choice not to. it is the choice of one woman who finds it empowering to dress modestly and another's not to. The freedom to choose is what it all comes down to.

Damn do y'all not know what feminism actually means. Its basically fighting for equal rights and opportunities for men and women. What does wearing stuff after marriage have to do with anything. That's freedom of choice. Human rights. Its first human rights more than feminism. When people who don t know what feminism actually entails brings the word in for literally anything the word loses its meaning like it has nowadays. People think feminism is some bra burning anti-men agenda which is an extremist view and not actual fundamental feminism. Illiterate ignorant asses run away from being called a feminist even women because they don't have any idea what it's basic meaning is. And posts like this propagate the idea.

FYI, if one ever says they are not feminists what they are essentially saying is that they don't believe men and women are born equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities and that person needs to be thrown out of society.

And on topic, how does it even relate. Her mother's whole identity was erased when she was called by her father's name but in her case she is still Priyanka. Nothing's wrong with Priyanka Chopra Jonas just like nothing is wrong with Mrs Madhu Chopra. If Priyanka ever gets called Mrs Nick Jonas, that will be problematic. This is so stupid.

Is that so? But what name will Neha's daughter take when she gets married? Mehr Dhupia Bedi<Husband's surname>? 😕

And what about Mehr's child? What name will he/she get? <First Name>Dhupia Bedi<Husband's surname>😲

Man, it'll be so much trouble while filling up forms of such loong names.🥱

Let's face it. This surname system doesn't support modern day feminism. Feminism is about equality between men and women, and this surname system can either be patriarchal or matriarchal. Even if women don't change their surnames after marriage, but when the couple has a child, they give him/her the husband's surname. Why? Because the child is seen as the son/daughter of his/her father first and foremost. Then comes other relations.

If we really want equality then we have to ditch this surname system completely. What's the need to know about our bloodline? I am who I am. I don't need anyone's name attached with me. I've my own identity.

This surname thing is also the root cause of caste-based and religion-based differences between people.

And to those who are talking about feminism being "free will", there are women in the backward classes o f society, who consider it right if their husband beats them for any mistake done by them. Will you also call it "free will"?

@AllthatCritique: i totally agree..the word 'feminism's reduced to such things these days...wearing a sindoor or taking her husband;s surname
what would you call somone like Sudha Murthy who is a traditional married woman and has taken her husband's name but is doing so much good work for the betterment of the society and has earned a name of her own😕

Nope. Because free will or freedom.of choice entails that one has cent percent agency of their bodies and actions. In the situation you mentioned the women have no agency at all. Also they dont know their rights and have been raised in a society and culture where violence against them have been normalised. They never had the chance to think for themselves or have a look at the other side of things. Patriarchy didnt give them a chance to take agency of their bodies or thoughts.

It's a tricky situation. I myself don't like changing surname n women in my family don't either in most cases. But then my surname is my father's n it's unfair to my mother. But if we keep adding surname each generation its gonna just be ridiculously long at one point. I don't see a solution. But yes women should be given the choice. If she'd change surname or not.

Pc didn't change her surname though she just added his. Which to some may look backdated n that's fine but let her do her thing. In her mother's case though her whole name was converted into something of an extension of her husband's name . That's wrong n humiliating.

I also hate one thing. Some in-laws just change daughter in law's name after marriage,to name her something they like or that matches their son's name better or maybe cz there r already people with her name in the in laws family. It's really bad imo

Definition of feminism has totally been ruined these days and interpreted to suit one's convenience. The surname change is no where related to feminism and if one doesn't change her surname after marriage, she doesn't become a feminist. That's her personal choice.

the example above is a woman who is raised with a belief that men are right and she has no standing in the society without his acceptance otherwise..so she 'thinks' it is ok to be mistreated by him..it is not free will

are you implying it is the same in priyanka's case?..that she is forced to believe that she had no other choice but to keep her husband's surname? do you think nick jonas would have rejected her if she hadn't?:)

also even though western countries are more open-minded when it comes to women rights but taking the husband's name after marriage is a norm there too as well as wearing a wedding ring...would you call them backward too?

Western countries women actually change surname more. I won't lie it's irritating to me at times when they make such a big deal out of it like being Mrs something is the best thing that ever happened to them. I see educated suburban white women do that the most honestly .

Feminism is about equal rights, but it's also about choice.
