Dayanand Shetty plays the role of senior Inspector Daya in CID for which he's immense popular. He won the best looking guy vote conducted by Indian television, in 2002.Daya was born on 11th December, 1969, in a Tulu speaking Bunt family in Katapadi village of Udupi state of Karnataka state in India to Chandra Prakash Shetty and Uma Shetty. He has two sisters. Daya did his B.com from Rizvi College, Bandra. He's married to Smitha and has a daughter named Viva.Daya was basically a sportsman, a short put and discus thrower and won many prizes in those. He was the champion of discus throw from Maharashtra in 1994. He left sports due to leg injury.Later he got into acting as a theatre artist and worked in plays like Secret and Kaalchakra. He got the best actor award for one among them.
One day he went for the auditions held for a cop in the show CID and that was something which made all the difference. There were seven popular faces standing at the spot and Daya had to converse a dialogue," Apna kaam kaaj jari rakhiye". That was the first time he faced the camera as an actor and CID's producer BP Singh showed him a thumbs up from behind the camera. Daya originally joined the team as a sub-inspector and currently he's Senior Inspector Daya.
He has appeared in a lot of shows and ads, even movies.
When tragedy stuck Uttarakhand, he went there to lend a hand in 2013.
"We've been hearing the horror stories, and feeling helpless," says Daya. "Along with my producer BP Singh and some assistant directors, I'm going to Uttarakhand and will help in any way possible. We will reach Rishikesh and go up to Joshimath and organise a food camp where the most people are stuck," he says.
The team, which isn't associated with any NGO or political party, plans to help people get home, and provide medicines and blankets. "I'm ready to do manual labour in helping the army to clean up or restore order," he says. The team is in touch with locals who helped co-ordinate the shoot. "They told us that food is a huge issue. Even the small restaurants have shut as they don't have business anymore," he says. Daya isn't worried about work right now. "The show will continue without me. I will stay there for 10-20 days and even more if needed."His immense fan following is sometimes hard to control. Such an incident took place in January 2014, when his charm lured around 50, 000 fans in Ahmedabad.
The crowd got so out of control that the shoot came to a halt on the first day. Later, Daya clicked photos with his female fans.
"The Ahmedabad shoot was wonderful. Initial two days were like mad, we were not able to control the public," said Daya adding that there were about 50,000 people.
From sub inspector to senior inspector, DAYA has been an iconic character of Indian television and the actor holds the great credit of having immortalized this character. This character gave him immense fame since 1998. Who else, apart from Daya would have managed to portray the legendary super cop?
Inspector Daya is the backbone, the main muscle of CID, one of the three central pillars along with ACP Pradyuman and Abhijeet. Apart from using his amazing investigative skills, he uses his muscle power to subdue criminals. He's a nightmare for the criminals. But away from this outer tough macho copish look, he's a soft-hearted man as evident in plenty of his scenes.
Daya's relation with his team members is very special, especially with his best friendAbhijeet, their friendship is immortal. Numerous times the two have risked their lives to rescue each other.
Next is Acp Pradyuman who is like a father to him, then come Freddy and Dr. Salunkhe.
Daya has always proved to be an ideal senior for his juniors in the CID team..a leader to guide them to radiance.
There have been plentiful occasions on which he got roughly injured and convicted but each incident has made him stronger than ever. From "The case of the missing bullet" to "Behrupiya", to the recent "Daya vs Daya", he faced all the hurdles and conquered them.
Daya participated in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and won praises for his dance performances. His first ever performance won him "Performer of the day" award and Madhuri Dixit became an ardent admirer of his smile. His stint in JDJ was a memorable one.
Daya was a contestant of Khatron Ke Khiladi season 4 hosted by Rohit Shetty. This show displayed an unseen side of him and his departure episode flaunted his unrivaled honesty to the world. He was a part of this show till the first ten episodes, taking up the challenge against his biggest fear, water.
In the year 2005, he appeared in a crossover episode of Sony's Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin asInspector Daya to locate the criminal who fired bullet on Jassi.
In 2005 only, he made a special appearance in Sony's other show, Kkusum, as Inspector Daya.

He was a part of two seasons of Sab Tv's Gutur Gu and demonstrated his versatility.
Daya made an appearance to represent CID in a special episode of comedy circus, in 2012. That episode included his dance performance.
He has also appeared in Movers and Shakers, Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega, Sa re ga ma pa little champs, Deal ya no deal, Jeena isi ka naam hai etc.
His advertisements include Castrol, Chyavanprash, Hero Honda, life, Seequre and many more clothing brands.
MOVIES
Daya made his debut in bollywood in 2007, as Shiva in Johnny Gaddar. Shiva was one among the gang members and in this movie he got to share screen space with Dharmendra.
His second flick in bollywood was Runaway'.
Third and the most prominent one came this year, Rohit Shetty's Singham Returns. The latter offered a role to DS after his stint in Khatron Ke Khiladi. Daya played a police officer named Daya in this movie and the viewers got their CID moment when Singham roared, Daya darwaza tod do'.
