CHAPTER 9: MUMBAI DARSHAN; BELLA ESTYLE (I)
The next day was Monday but Bella cancelled all of their meetings and told Mahir that they were going out that day. Mahir kept sputtering about Andy but Bella assured him that she would take care of Andy. Immediately after the breakfast she went to Andy's study and knocked on the door.
Bella: Dad, may I come in?
Andy: Of course. What happened?
Bella: Actually dad we, as in me and Mahir wanted to go out and I wondered if it would be okay if we did not attend the office today?
Andy: Well Bella, it's your call to take. I have retired now and the company is in your hands. You can do whatever you see fit. And by the way, today is a bank holiday. Even if you attend the office today, no one else will come. So...
Bella: Ooops! Sorry dad. I guess we forgot. No wonder Vinay did not reply when I messaged him to ask about today's meetings.
Andy: Well, now that you know, what are you waiting for? Go and enjoy yourselves.
Bella skipped out of the room, happy that they would not have to miss work for this joyride around the town. Mahir was waiting for her at the breakfast table having remembered that, that was a holiday. When Sumitra came inside the dining room, Bella informed her that they would not be home that day as she was taking Mahir out on a date. Sumitra was amused but she consented to the date and Bella and Mahir left after having breakfast. When they stepped outside, Bella ordered their driver to drive them to her baba's place. When they reached there, Bella hurriedly went inside and brought out a set of keys and made Mahir get down from the car and dismissed their driver.
Mahir was puzzled as to why did she ask the driver to go back. She led Mahir to the building's parking lot and went towards a sipc and span scooty parked over there. Mahir hung back looking at it.
Bella: Come on!!
Mahir: Bella, I don't know how to drive or ride whatever it is called a bike... (He was looking cutely terrified at the very thought of riding a bike)
Bella: What? You have never...
Mahir shook his head, looking really adorable as his lower lip jutted out.
Bella: Well it's a good thing that I can ride a scooty. Come on you are sitting on the pillion seat.
Mahir: But why? We could have taken our car... Or even your car for that matter..
Bella: Mahir we are not going to the Taj Mahal Palace hotel where you have secure parking. We are going around the city. We will be going to the Girgaum chowpatty then the Crowford market... We will visit an Irani cafe for coffee... Do you really think these places will have a parking place for your Mercedes E class? And oh yeah, I am taking you to Colaba Causeway... We will shop for some jewellery as well.
Mahir: What are all these places? I mean I have heard of them but... I have heard they are very crowded and...
Bella: Loosen up a bit Mahir. They are crowded for sure, but that adds to their charm you know. Today you will do all those things which you have never done...
Mahir, suddenly in a very naughty mood.
Mahir: Oh really? I will get to do all those things which I have never done in my life?
He went up to her and pulled her close to him by holding her waist.
Mahir: You know, I never romanced my girlfriend either. So does that mean I get to romance you as well?
Bella: Mahir!! I am your wife. And what do you mean that you have never romanced your GIRLFRIEND? Who was she?
Mahir: Relax, my dear. I meant that I never had a girlfriend. That is what I am saying. I never had a girlfriend so I never got the opportunity to romance her either. So tell me, will I get to be a really tharki boyfriend and romance my girlfriend?
Bella: Tharki and you? As if you could pull that off.
Mahir: What do you mean by that?
Bella: Well you could barely look at you wife before she gave you a green signal. I really can't imagine a well behaved guy like you ever even thinking of being tharki.
Mahir: Is that a challenge?
Bella: Yes it is.
Mahir: Okay then. I will be on tharkiest behaviour today and it's a challenge that by the time the day ends, you, my dear girlfriend will be very eager to cross that dreaded line and get into my bed with me.
Bella: What kind of foolish challenge is this Mahir? I am your wife. We literally sleep together on a daily basis.
She had pushed him away from herself, but now he once again pulled her close, his hand caressing her cheek.
Mahir: Come on Bella, don't be a bore. Live a little. Think how exciting it would be to cross the dreaded line once again, but as girlfriend and boyfriend this time? Come on! Let's go back in time and live the life we both never lived. Please?
Bella nodded her head but suddenly pushed him away from herself. Mahir looked at her puzzled.
Bella: What are you doing Mahir? Baba will see us. And I don't want Baba to know about our relationship yet. So keep your hands to yourself.
She then proceeded to kick the scooty to life and brought it out of the parking lot. Mahir sat down behind her and held her by her waist.
Bella: I said keep your hands to yourself Mr. Boyfriend. Someone will see us.
Mahir: But I am your tharki boyfriend right? So...
He snaked his hands around her waist and pulled her close with his chin resting on her exposed shoulder.
Bella: Oh hello! Put this on.
She handed him a helmet and put one on herself. At long last they went off on their first date. Their first stop was Crawford Market. All the way to the market, Mahir kept his hands glued to her waist. Bella was really enjoying the ride. She was riding her scooty after a really long time and that coupled with the excitement that she was out on her first date with Mahir made her very happy. When they reached the market area, she parked her scooty at a pay and park and they walked towards the iconic Hotel Badashah hand in hand. All those sites were very new for Mahir. He had never been to that area ever and hence had never really seen those places. They kept getting jostled by people moving about here and there. Bella held on to Mahir's hand tightly as they walked.
They first entered the market building where Mahir was amazed to see so many shops that sold so many different items. He was shocked to see cosmetics of brands like MAC and Channel being sold in those narrow shops. He was even more surprised to see people actually buying those items. Bella led him deeper inside the market where there were shops selling all kinds of dry fruits. Rows upon rows of jars were filled with all kinds of spices and dry fruits. There were multiple shops that sold chocolates and candies of various different types. Bella insisted on buying a packet of marshmallows for Suhani as she loved them. They approached one such shop and bought packet of marshmallows. Mahir was like a small boy, wanting to buy every possible kind of chocolate and candy that the shop keeper had. Bella had a great difficulty stopping him.
Mahir: But why Bella? See, there are so many types of marshmallows itself. How do you know which ones Sunhani would like? Let's buy two packets of each variety so that we can be sure...
Shopkeeper: Yes sir, each packet has a different flavours and taste and texture is also very different.
Bella: Mahir! And I know all about different taste and texture bhaiya. Give two of those pink and white ones and leave it at that. (In a very low tone to Mahir) Where are you going to keep them? We have brought my scooty, remember?
Mahir meekly nodded his head and paid the vendor. They moved further inside the market. Bella led him out from a different exit and they crossed the road to the other side. Just as they were about to cross the road, Mahir noticed a shop selling all kinds of bake ware. Silicone baking utensils and chocolate moulds, chocolate colours and all kinds of sprinkles and toppings. Bella once again had difficulty in pulling Mahir away from that shop. He was insisting on buying all the different shapes of moulds as he knew Bella loved making chocolates at home. Her handcrafted chocolates were his favourite. When she once again raised the question of carrying things home, he whipped out his phone and called their driver. He told him to come and wait in the Crowford Market area and collect their bags when he would call him. With that problem out of the way, he proceeded to buy many moulds for her. She was amused and exasperated, both at the same time.
Once they were done, they finally crossed over to the other side, hand in hand. Bella led him to the iconic Hotel Badashah.
Mahir: Bella, it is so crowded here. Let's go somewhere else.
Bella: Mahir, this is THE iconic place. And don't worry they almost always have at least one empty table.
When they entered, the man at the counter pointed in the direction of the staircase and they both climbed up to the AC sitting area. That area was jam packed even on a Monday morning. As they took their seats, a server brought out the menu cards for them. Bella insisted on ordering a bhel to share between the two of them. The place looked ordinary enough to Mahir's eyes and he said so.
Bella: Mahir, this place has been around since 1905, more than a hundred years. That in itself makes it iconic enough. And their faloodas are really good. And even if it is not so good, iconic places are not about good food, it is the popularity that makes it iconic. That is the fun part. Visiting the place for its sheer popularity.
Just then the bhel came and Bella stopped talking. Mahir was looking at the huge mound, while Bella looked at him amused. She offered him a spoon which he took. He took a tentative bite of the bhel as Bella watched him carefully. She saw his expressions relax into a contented smile as the sweet, salty and tangy taste of bhel hit his taste buds. Even she began to dig in. Mahir looked at her in delight. She looked so happy just then. Gone was the prim and proper girl who attended board meetings and was tough nut to crack in the board room. This side of Bella was rather new to him. Bella saw him looking at her and she offered him a spoonful of bhel from her spoon. As she fed him bhel, she saw a middle aged lady looking at both of them in a disapproving manner at their PDA. They were sitting on the same side of the table, and Mahir's arm was around her as they ate. To the outside world it must have looked really cheesy, but they both were enjoying themselves.
She giggled as Mahir wiped away a bit of sev from the corner of her mouth with his finger. The woman's frown deepened and she looked scandalized when Mahir proceeded to eat that bit. Feeling very mischievous suddenly, she gave Mahir a quick peck on his cheek. Mahir was shocked at this sudden boldness on her part. The woman looked away embarrassed and Bella giggled even more loudly. Mahir looked at her enquiringly and she shook her head. Mahir's hand tightened around her and he pulled her closer to him. He was giving her a very sly smile. Bella knew he was about to do something and she quickly called a waiter and placed the order for their faloodas. Mahir looked at her disappointed and she looked back innocently. Mahir suddenly felt her toes tickling his leg and they climbed upwards. He looked at her in shock but she continued to look innocent.
Bella: What? I never said I will play fair and not tease you. You will have to up your tharki game if you want to keep up. (And she winked)
He smiled. So this is how it was going to be huh? Well two could play at a game. If she was going to drive him crazy with her not-so-subtle teasing then well... She asked for it... He waited for their faloodas to arrive. When they did, he placed his free hand on the cold glass and pulled her closer with his other hand. She tried to squirm away but his grip was firm. He then placed his cold fingers on her bare thigh slightly above of what would have been casual. She was wearing shorts that day, and she was surprised to feel his ice cold finger tracing circles on her exposed skin under the table. She shivered slightly as Mahir continued to tease her. She looked at him accusingly and he shrugged casually, an evil smile on his face.
Mahir: What happened Bella? Anything wrong with your falooda?
Bella: No.
Bella understood that Mahir was going to continue to tease her all though the day. She smiled. Now this would be fun. They quickly finished their faloodas and paid the bill and went outside again. She then led him towards the iconic cloth market, the Mangaldas Market. Here once again he was surprised to find narrow lanes, all filled with cloth shops selling every imaginable quality of cloth. Right from rough cotton to highest grade silk he could see everything being sold in those shops. They both strolled around the market soaking in the sights and they watched various customers and shopkeepers haggling with each other for prices. They encountered a bride who had come to shop for a cloth for her wedding trousseau. Seeing her they both smiled, remembering their own hurried, imperfect but perfect for them, wedding.
They both exited the market and went towards the parking lot and called their driver to collect their bags from their hands. Once that was done, he was told to come to Colaba Causeway. They both once again sat on the scooty and went away in Colaba Causeway's direction. Once again Mahir sat behind Bella, but this time around Mahir was not so well behaved. He kept dropping fleeting kisses on her bare shoulder as they rode. Bella was finding it extremely difficult to focus on the road and she said so.
Mahir: What? It is a challenge and you know I never back away from a challenge. You have invoked the tharki monster within me. Now bear the consequences.
Bella shook her head as they rode on. It was true, she had challenged him. But then she was not someone who backed away from a challenge either. And she knew Mahir's weakness, so she planned to use it to her advantage. She suddenly applied emergency brakes making Mahir bump into her from behind.
Mahir: Wah! Madam, you are taking full advantage of being the one who is driving this thing. This is generally used by boys to make girls make into them, but you?
Bella: You just wait and watch Mahir Sehgal. I know you better now.
Mahir: We shall see.
When they reached Colaba Causeway, Bella parked her scooty in a side alley and led Mahir towards Cafe Mondegar. As went further down the side walk, Mahir was very much shocked to see the various bold and gaudy looking items that the vendors were selling. Jewellery of every imaginable kind, antiques looking clocks, crystals and stones, footwear, clothes, handbags, show pieces... The list of items being sold was endless. Here Bella unleashed her full on bargaining power as she bargained for various trinkets. Mahir questioned her when he saw her buy a particularly gaudy and over the top pair of earrings.
Mahir: Where do you plan to wear this?
Bella: Well, I don't know. You remember the pair of earrings that I had worn for the party that you threw for Khushboo?
Mahir: Yes. Why?
Bella: I had bought that pair from here a few months ago. It went well with that dress. I seem to recall, you had called me ravishing when I asked you about my that day's look later on.
Mahir: Well...
She turned back to her shopping as Mahir looked on. He had never really seen her so happy. He smiled mischievously as he placed his hand on her waist such that his thumb was inside the back pocket of her shorts. She jumped slightly when she felt his thumb placement but he continued to look around innocently, even as he wriggled his thumb a bit. Bella was finding it hard to focus on her conversation with the vendor and she was blushing furiously at Mahir's touch. She hurriedly bought the pair of earring and moved forwards. But Mahir kept pace with her, his hand still on her waist.
Next she bought a pair of anklets. Mahir insisted on making her wear them so as to test whether they fit ankles or not. Bella, being well aware of his intentions, and being supremely uncomfortable of Mahir sitting at her feet in public, tried to protest. But Mahir shut her up with a look and proceeded to make her wear the anklets, taking his own sweet time. He let his fingers trail slowly down her right calf making her shiver. She tried to keep the vendor engaged in a conversation so that he did not notice Mahir's actions but that was rather difficult as Mahir's fingers were sending jolts of electricity through her body. She squirmed a little and the vendor looked at her puzzled. Mahir's back blocked his view and hence he had no idea that Mahir had, very sneakily, planted a feather light kiss on Bella's knee as he stood up. Finally Mahir paid that man and they moved further down the sidewalk.
Bella's face was still rather pink because of Mahir's actions. He wriggled his eyebrows devilishly at her and she blushed even more. He put an arm around her shoulder and she buried her face in his chest as they walked. Just then Mahir noticed a pair of really outlandish glares and insisted on buying those. Bella was dying for a little payback and so she insisted on making him wear that pair. As she put the glares on Mahir, she was careful let her fingers lightly caress his cheeks and lightly brush against his lips. His lips curled into a smile at her touch. Bella insisted on clicking a selfie with him and she pecked him on the cheek as they clicked the selfie. As they walked further they reached the famous Leopold Cafe.
Mahir: So this is the Leopold Cafe...
Bella: Yes but we are not going in there. This place creeps me out for some reason.
Mahir looked at Bella in surprise and saw to his surprise she was actually being very serious about it creeping her out. She was no longer smiling but was actually trembling in his arms. He led her away from the place and she let out a sigh of relief.
Mahir: Are you okay Bella? Need to sit down somewhere?
Bella: No, I am fine. It's just that, that place reminds me of...
Mahir: I know. Did anything happen...
Bella: No, but that place just gives me very weird vibes. I can't explain but you just can't connect with some places or maybe some places just don't seem safe to you... Cafe Leopold is one such place for me.
Mahir: Okay, we will not talk about this now. What's next on the agenda?
Bella: I am very hungry. So the choice is yours. Either Cafe Mondegar or Picadilly for lunch. Both have their own merits. And I am okay with both so choose.
Mahir: Let's go to Picadilly. As surprising as it may sound, I have actually been to Mondegar once befor. Yuvi had dragged me here years ago when we were in college. So Picadilly would be a new experience for me.
Bella: Well then Picadilly it is.
And so, having decided where they were going to have lunch they went away hand in hand to the Irani cafe that was almost a block away.
