Does AB deserve Indian of the year honour

Share

He's a legend,an iconic actor...But what warrants that he be bestowed the Indian of the year awardConfused...He hasnt contributed anything for India,or the Indian diaspora....So many other dignitaries of other fields have contributed more to India, and have made India proud(Kiran Desai,Indira Noori to cite).

In the entertainment field per se,Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt have inspired more with their Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai respectively.Especially Aamir Khan,as he even voiced his support and showed solidarity towards the rehabilitation of the peasants of the Narmada valley, and he makes movies on social subjects(His next movie is about the farmers' plight, who are driven into suicide when their harvest is deplorable)...Sanjay Dutt brought back Gandigiri and how! Thus if anybody at all from the entertainment field qualifies for the Indian of the Year award, its Aamir(Not sanjay as albeit Sanjay inspired with his Gandhidiri,he was found guilty under the Arms act)

What so outstanding have Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai done, that they clinch the # 4 honours...ABhishek hasnt done ANYTHING AT ALLDeadand neither has Ash officially represented India at any global platform(She was at Cannes to represent L'OREAL ambassadorially, not India). She has just been a shrinking violet and isnt in the remotest way a deserving nominee for this prestigious titleDead....How do these actors become more laudable than someone like Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam who has inspired a plethora of students,or Narayan Murthy who is a paragon of simplicity and humility despite belonging to the beau monde, and has given so many job oppurtunities to a barrage of engineers....

Even Sonia Gandhi has done more for the nation than AB,and Sabrina Lall with sheer grit and determination, she was the one who refused to give up when virtually everybody else had.First, she lost her beloved sister. Then, both her parents. Minus her closest and dearest ones, Sabrina's emotional life must have been pretty barren.Eventually, it was her dignity and fortitude that shone through in the darkest of hours. She had neither Manu Sharma's political clout, nor his financial resources. All she had was unflinching courage and deep belief. Last week, her faith finally paid off.Doesnt she deserve the applause more than AB??

Bachchan Tops TOI-TNS Poll For 2nd Year In A Row

TIMES INSIGHT GROUP

One man is making the annual exercise of deciding the Indian of the year a rather predictable ritual and he is, of course, Amitabh Bachchan. Once again, a poll conducted across five metros has voted him to that position by some distance. About 15% of the 1,005 people polled by the survey done exclusively for TOI by TNS chose the Big B, while the next best, Sachin Tendulkar and Sonia Gandhi, got the thumbs up from only about a third that number.

Bachchan, not surprisingly, is most popular among housewives (19%). His popularity also increases with the age of respondents. While only 12% of the youngest age group (18 to 24) voted for him as Indian of the year, 18% of the oldest (35-45) picked him ahead of the rest.

Chennai was one city in which the Big B was pipped to the post—polling just 3%— by several others, including Sonia and Sachin. In Bangalore, he was tied for the top slot with Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy. In every other metro, he was ahead of the rest, particularly in Delhi where 31% voted for him.

Besides the South, Kolkata was the only city in which Bachchan faced any competition, with West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee getting 13% compared to his 14% and Amartya Sen a close third at 12%.

Wonderful Post as usual BuffieClap

I agree with your thoughts completely.Personally I don't beleive in this "Indian of the Year","Person of the Year" awards or ratings.Just for the reason they are not genuine awards. Each field is unique and each person is unique in this world.

I really wonder what has Amitabh done to people of India or World,he just acted well and he got money we got entertained, there ends the deal. But its different with the case of Shri A.P.J .Abdul Kalam or Shri Narayana Murthy ;these people are a source of inspiration, they are part of development of the country .These people don't need sms polls ;they are great whether they are in 1st or 5th or 15 th position in these stupid polls.

Cheers,

Mythili

The problem lies in teh fact tht this was done via an SMS poll and ppl who are crazy abt their film stars vote for them countless number of times and often lack knowledge about other "Indians"!

Moral of the story.....don't take such awards seriously....the whole thing is done for commercial purposes and in no way represents the truth fo the matter....this is more of a popularity contest....

Look at the bright side----atleast SRK didnt win!
