Shammi Kapoor was an Indian film actor who starred in over 50 films as lead actor, and over 20 films in supporting roles. He has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor once, for his performance in the film Brahmachari (1968). He made a unique place for himself in the industry as he was the only dancing hero in Hindi films from the late 1950s till the early 1970s. He used to compose dancing steps in the songs starring him and reportedly never needed a choreographer. This earned him the name of Elvis Presley of India.

The Shammi Kapoor interview you may have missed

True to the T', Shammi Kapoor used to describe himself as Renaissance man, retired actor and computer buff on Twitter. Sreya Basu was in conversation with India's king of feel-good movies of the 1960s in recent times. Excerpts from that interview

What's the best thing of being in the Indian film industry for over five decades?
The most wonderful thing about the films of my times was the innocence. Those were happy movies...hero meets heroine, chases her, used to sing 7-8 songs for fasao-ing (impressing) her, then last mein Pranji ki tarah ek villain bhi aa jayenge.

The hero has a climax fight with Pran to save the heroine. And at the end, the lovers are united. I belong to the era when films were simple, they didn't tax your brains; At least, my films were not thought-provoking, they were hardcore entertainers.

Most of your musical hits were playbacked by Mohammad Rafi...
Rafisaab was my voice...after his death, I lost my voice...I cried like hell. He had a great sense of humour. Generally, I used to be present at the recordings of all my songs.

I always requested him to sing the songs with the nuances that I will portray on the screen. He used to happily oblige. And after the recording, when I listened to the songs, I wondered how could he sing exactly the way I wished him to!

You never asked him (Rafi) how could he feel your pulse?
Yes. I did. Remember the song Aasman se aaya farista from Kashmir Ki Kali? I was not present at the recording of that song. After listening to the song,

I asked him Main toh wahan tha nehin, so how could you get the exact nuances that I planned to perform on screen?' He said: I just fantasized how Shammi Kapoor will sing and perform this song. If he is Shammi Kapoor, then at one moment he will jump from here and then take a dive from there.'

You had your unique style of dancing...
I never learnt how to dance; never had a dance master. When I was 18-19 years old, I joined a dancing school in Dadar to learn Tango. They used to charge Rs 20 for an hour. After spending Rs 100, I realized that I hadn't learnt anything. But I always gave expressions as required to my songs.

You once said you used to forget your dialogues seeing Madhubala. True?
Absolutely true. There was this film-Rail Ka Dibba (1953)...Madhubala was my heroine. She was so beautiful and me a new hero, hardly 20-year-old. I used to forget my dialogues seeing her and she used to help me out.

Can you pick one film that will remain unforgettable for you?
I will never forget Teesri Manzil...it was during the shooting of the film, I suffered the saddest moment of my life...I lost my wife (Geeta Bali) in 1965. I was shattered, but had to continue shooting. She was there before Teesri Manzil's shooting started... she was very happy that I was offered the film. She said she wants to see my contribution in the film. I could not digest that fact that she was no longer there.

What made the eternal lover boy of Indian cinema so computer savvy even before the Internet wave hit India?
I discovered Internet before you got Internet in India. You got in 1995...VSNL. I took it up as a hobby. I am on Apple and they gave us a website called eWorld.

The British telecom gave us a line through VSNL, even though VSNL was not available at that time (1994). That was an eye-opener...something completely new. And by the time Internet came to India, we were already first-marchers...already sab kuch dekh liya tha.

You have all the latest gadgets (including IPad). You are on Facebook, Twitter, maintain your own website...
I go to the hospital thrice a week for dialysis for the last seven years. There are millions of well-wishers who pray for me, bless me so that I remain healthy and return home safe. Believe me, Internet is the best medium to connect with lost friends.

I had a very dear friend Afzal in Pakistan. It shocked me completely when I received his email one day after 50 years! The machine (computer) did another good to me...

Which one?
The moment the mouse came in my hand, the cigarette flew away...permanently.

All my dancing was extempore: Shammi Kapoor

By Dibyojyoti Baksi

Mumbai, May 20 (IANS) His energetic, untamed, inimitable and sometimes crazy dance moves were a hit with all age groups. Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor reveals he never worked with a choreographer and created every step spontaneously for the camera.
"I was very much influenced by my own self," Kapoor, 78, told IANS in an exclusive interview.
"Technology at that time was not all that advanced. Today you can see an Elvis Presley film, make it stop frame and see it frame by frame. We used to go to the cinema halls once in a while. Things that I used to like in the movies used to stay in my mind and later I used to use them in my songs.
"There's a song 'Don't be cruel'. I took that and put it in 'Dil de ke dekho...' song. As far as the dancing is concerned, I made it all by myself. I never knew what would be my next step."
Some of his timeless hits include "Baar baar dekho", "Badan pe sitare", "Yahoo", "Aaja Aaja main hoon pyaar tera", "Aye hasina zulfon wali", "Aaj kal tere mere pyaar ke charche". And they have been heard and enjoyed time and again over the decades and are played at dance parties even today.
Reminiscing the shooting of the song "Suku suku", he said: "I never took any choreographer. I was doing 'Suku Suku' ('Junglee') with Helen. P.L. Raj was choreographing the number for Helen. I told Raj to tell me what her steps are and I will adjust accordingly. He didn't know what I was going to do.
"It was extempore completely. Sometimes, if I had to give a second take, my steps used to be different. I couldn't do the same thing again."
Asked if anyone among today's actors resembles his traits, he said: "No. They are much better. Hrithik Roshan and all of them are much, much better. Even Shah Rukh Khan has done some excellent work...I did my things and they do their things.
Among the current lot who are ruling the Hindi film industry are scions of the Kapoor family too - Kareena and Ranbir.
The 78-year-old, who gave hits like "Junglee" (1961), "Bluff Master" (1963), "Kashmir Ki Kali" (1964) and "An Evening In Paris"(1967), retired from movies long time back. But he surely keeps a track of the new films and says that he misses innocence and melody in today's movies.
"In my time, there was a lot of innocence involved. They were very sweet films. There was no lecture, no politicising and there was a lot of good music. In today's films, techniques have evolved. But where has the music gone? I miss the melody of my time.
"From the films of my time you walk with good music, you carry that tune home and may be you sing that in bathroom also. Today people are not singing in the bathroom because they don't have tunes to sing," said Kapoor.
Despite his age, Kapoor keeps himself abreast with new technology. He was first among Hindi film celebrities to use Yahoo e-mail.
In fact, people used to think that Kapoor owned Yahoo Internet browser as their ad used to say something like 'Shammi Kapoor has got Yahoo.com'.
"When my nephew Randhir Kapoor started using internet, he called me up and asked why I didn't tell him that Yahoo belongs to me (because of that promo). I told him that it doesn't belong to me. Had it been mine, I would have been in America. He regretted that it wasn't mine or we could all have settled in America. Lots of people were under the impression that Yahoo was my company.
"When Jerry Yang (co-founder and former CEO of Yahoo) came to India, he opened Yahoo India.com. He invited me to the Taj (Hotel) and as a matter of fact they played my 'Yahoo' song," Kapoor recalled.
